I thought Mazda had sorted the rust by the Mk3. I was told the subframes had corrosion, but I wasn’t expecting anything like this when I put my head underneath to investigate a blowing exhaust! It looks like it has spent the last 10 years on a beach!

Those are my initial thoughts, but the local MX-5 specialist thinks he can re-subframe it cheaply. The body is actually OK as the underseal has survived quite well - it must just be shit paint on the subframe and suspension components.

Not looking great and without quite a lot of work it is going to become more of a liability. It doesn't look as though the manufacturer's rustproofing could have been much more than a bit of paint.

Just had a chat with the specialist and it's going in to be assessed on Monday. They do a underside refurbish (blast, coat, rebush, suspension refresh & underseal) for about £1k.

It doesn't look pretty but actually all the rusty bits in the photos appear to be suspension related arms, etc. What's the floor of the car look like?

Bodywork appears to be OK. The boot floor may need a couple of patches which will be easy when the sub frames are off.
Good second hand subframes are £50 or so if there isn’t enough metal on them and I’m sure the suspension control arms will come up OK after blasting and coating so I’m not overly concerned. I’m prepared to spend a couple of thousand on it if needed. Lindsey doesn’t want a new car as she likes this one. Yes, I could get a new on PCP, but all I would be paying for is the depreciation and it’s not like this one owes me anything.

Maybe it just wanted to fit in with the rest of the fleet?
Seriously.....sounds like a no brainier getting it fixed for £1k.w

Agreed. Even if it costs £2k due to project creep, it’s still less than a years payments on a new one via PCP or lease. It’s worth about £4K because the body is tidy and it’s only done 55k.
I only paid £9k for it 7 years ago. Can’t complain at that.

Drove up to the MX-5 specialist this afternoon. He got it on the ramp and confirmed it could do with the subframes doing, but everything is serviceable and it is worth doing. It wouldn’t be if it got left much longer.
The two subframes and all the suspension arms will be removed and blasted. The subframes will be powder coated and the arms epoxy painted.
It will get a new set of coil overs which will replace the standard springs and shocks to get it to a more suitable ride height.
I haven’t made my mind up on the exhaust yet. The rear silencer has broken away from the centre section just behind the resonator and the whole system is fairly rotten. I am tempted to put a stainless system on it but I don’t want anything too loud.
I will probably get the wheels refurbished too.
It’s going in on the 17th and will rake about a week.

I hope it all goes well, at least you know the car rather than going out to buy another.

Car got dropped off yesterday. I had a call today. All the bushes are spanked (not really surprising) so it’s getting a full bush kit which will add to the cost quite a bit. It’s probably going to escalate to about £2500 all done, but I’ve had a look on Autotrader and there are several 07 plate 2.0 sport models between £6-7k so it’s definitely worth doing.

Looking good for many more years ahead +1, and I hope that under all the rustproofing, they have done a much better job than the TVR "specialist" did to your car.....

These people build and race their own MX-5s. www.akautomotive-mx5.co.ukI was happy with the chassis work by the TVR bloke, it was the engine that was a disaster from start to finish.

The lower ride height makes a huge difference. Still a decent looking car, you did the right thing improving and keeping it.
