They don't mention the type of usage, hell they don't even mention the abysmal fuel economy apart from noting it in the summary stats. However if we're going to believe that hybrids are feasible then tooling up and down the motorway is as relevant a test as any otherwise you're saying a hybrid should only be considered as a city car? In which case they perhaps need to be bigger capacity ICE engines for motorways and distance work, with a smaller electric motor system for those occasional trips in to cities, once they all, inevitably, bring in low emissions zones.

I missed it but, how much are they offering for someone to take it away?

Ban now approved by German courts www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-43211946It says its for older diesels (unless they have some expensive upgrades made!) but it's surely just the start of a campaign for a wider ban?

What will happen to those, crushed, parts?

That's some car graveyard. If they are going to send them to the crusher - and I can't see what else they can do with them - that'll be another load of cost removing all the recyclable parts and fluids.

That's just one VW graveyard in the USA, apparently there are several more !!! Edit - if you watch the clip, it says there are 37 in total, and that the cars are being "maintained" - I wonder how, and how much that is costing them ?

I assume they'll all be recycled to some extent - you can guarantee the insurance market won't be short of VW body panels in an array of colours! When it says maintained I presume they get started up occasionally, can't see it being much more than that. Most are unlikely to need a service anyway if all they're doing is sitting in a big car park.

A good opportunity for the mannequin model to show again? The multi coloured special.

This end of the wedge when you start looking...... The reason they're so cheap is Renault do that daft battery leasing scheme which adds significantly to the cost of the car. That ZOE does appear to have depreciated a considerable amount compared to the list price of a new one, however once you take into account the OLEV grant and very high "cash support" that Renault chuck at them, then it hasn't lost a huge amount; you can buy a new one for £14k

Interesting with the new WLTP emmisions tetsting that is coming into force later this year, Renault will not be offering a petrol auto on Captur or Clio as the engine isn't cleran enough, however the diesel will still be offered as it meets the emissions requirements.

I think the damn the diesel campaign has been a bit short on facts and proper thought. Older diesels fair enough but Euro V1 are in a different league.
I wrote to the transport minister recently asking for clarity on the Government's position on diesels and the ICE in general. I received a reply of a full page of complete drivel that said nothing about anything other than the Government were in favour of moving towards more sustainable types of transport and energy: that might be construed to mean a bike or a nuclear powered car but it's f*** all use as an answer to a current question!

Yep, we are being told EuroV onwards are as clean as any equivalent petrol out there. It is the usual mis-information rumour etc, plus it doesn't help that you hear of various cities wanting to ban diesel full stop or increase any congestion charge on any diesel; just an excuse to raise money, the general public don't know where they stand.

There was a lot of coverage yesterday due to the fairly poor March sales figures coming out and the point was made that the date for the end of petrol/diesel is more than 20 years away and that actually the people who are holding off now are going to buy several cars, no matter how they're powered, between now and then. The hope was actually that people would come out of their older diesels and go to a Euro V or newer but the knee jerk reaction has stopped that. Meanwhile there's no sign of restrictions on air travel, the replacement of diesel generators for the national grid, etc., just cars as usual

One of my car dealers was in yesterday saying he didn't know what had happened but over the past 6 weeks his used cars in the £6K to £15K range were flying out the door and he was now having trouble sourcing decent stock - he expects a firming of used car prices and a big demand for good well specced cars.

Weirdly, given all of the doom and gloom about March being poor for new car sales, we have just had our best Q1 for new car sales in about 10 years, our other branch didn't do so well but we absolutely smashed it.
I had the busiest Q1 myself than I can remember, I sold 55 cars; 40 new and 15 used, I handed over 30 cars in March alone, I did 146% of my new car target.

They haven’t built one since February, but Porsche have now confirmed that they will definately not be offering a diesel option, they will be focusing on hybrid technology

Do you think this will push v8d values up or down ?
Missus’ uncle has a v8d Panamera and it is fan bleedin’ tastic.
I would love one....

No idea, could easily go either way....I asked myself that question a few months ago. I had a test drive of a V8d and a basic petrol Sport Turismo back to back. The diesel was really good, it didn’t ride / go / sound quite as good as mine, but I’m sure I would be very happy with a Turbo. The basic petrol drove pretty well as you’d expect, but the performance doesn’t match the rest of the car and it would have been over £85k in a reasonable spec.

Back to the general subject of diesels, would now be a good or bad time to consider a new diesel?
I think that the initial panic is still occurring but eventually the reality might set in that people won't have to seriiously consider going electric until they've changed car another two or three times, perhaps in the late 2020s?

I wouldn't have thought that anyone owning or considering buying a Euro 6 diesel would have anything to worry about.

Has anyone seen the fucking ridiculous article on Autocrap about the Kodiaq vRS being the quickest 7 seater diesel SUV around the 'ring, or some such crap? It obviously couldn't beat any other records, so they just invented a new category!

Because when you have a 7 seat pretend off roader, what you really need to be able to do is go round corners really fast.
