Coolant is circulating. There could be a block in the head, I suppose, but it will have to come off anyway. TDi heads are very prone to damage when overheated.

I suspect that the blocked radiator may have caused issues elsewhere. Had that on my Rover 3500. Blocked radiator left crap in the coolant pathways. I had to have the engine flushed out and the head gaskets replaced to fix it.

The head has warped. The head bolts were all different tightness and the gasket had very obviously failed from combustion to coolant.
All coolant passageways are clear, so it's just the failed radiator that caused the problem. (Radiator didn't block, it split between the tanks)
It's at the engine works for a pressure test and if it passes, a skim.

Head has passed pressure testing and only needed the smallest of skims. £90 from the very nice people at Cleasby Engine Services in Meadowfield, Durham.
I've got all the new gaskets required and I'm also going to swap the brake vacuum pump as it's knocking its tits out. It does still produce some vacuum, but it's on its last legs. Replacement is difficult at best with the head on as the air filter bracket is in the way. This has to be the stupidest piece of design ever. Holding the air filter bracket to the engine using the head bolts. 🙄

Yes, in an ideal world, the bracket would be cut and extended with another couple of bolts.

Hopefully that's this episode of Defender ownership behind me. Head is back on with the new gasket and it bled up really easily. A good run out including some steep hills resulted in a steady tempersture gauge and warm heater.
Most importantly, the header tank was free of gasses.
Toyota Hilux order has been postponed for the moment.

Excellent. If I were to get a Japanese pickup it would be a Nissan Navara. We ran a fleet of them where I used to work and they were outstanding. Would easily pull a triple axle Ifor Williams flatbed, overloaded with bits of machinery. Here they are, with my old A4 just visible in the background

Yes the current Navara is nice, but both my neighbours have had electrical issues with theirs and I like being different.
The new DMax looks dear and I'm not a fan of the gutless 1.9 they use.
I like the look of the Ranger, but they are expensive in comparison to the Hilux, which is a little plasticky in full Toyota tradition.
I love my Defender, but I'm getting marginally tired of constantly spannering my daily driver so a contract hired, fully loaded pickup appeals.

Is the Amarok still on sale? Not sure if they are any good?

No low range, which is a deal breaker for me. They are a very good vehicle though.

The discontinued Mercedes version of the Navara was lush and could be had with a 3.0 V6.

My biggest gripe with a lot of the pick-ups is that they only have part time AWD systems. The websites and brochures are very opaque about it in many cases, which always makes me suspicious. Unless the latest ones have all been upgraded, I'm pretty sure a few years ago only the Merc and Amarok (with their biggest engines) and L200 were available with available full-time AWD systems that could be driven in AWD on the road all the time.

Yes, I know. Its just a shame the L200 is shit other than the 4x4 system.

Brake job tomorrow. Discs and pads all round. Not as simple as it sounds as all the hubs have to come off.
Borrowing a mates shed to do the work as the forecast isn't good at all.
Still considering my position on a more modern daily driver.

Discs and pads done.the kit comes with new hub seals too.
The rear wheel bearings were pretty manky, but they cleaned up fine and didn't need replacing.
The three flexi lines have been replaced with Goodridge items. Luckily, santa brought me a brake pipe flareing tool, as I had to make up four new hard lines as well, as they sheared off when I removed the calipers.
Initial impressions are that they work. This is good, as the old discs and pads had seemingly no friction at all. The discs were very blue and the pads were like glass. Not sure how that happened, as I'm not hard on my brakes at all.

Something I was told by a Renault technician servicing my Scenic told me, is that braking too gently all the time merely polishes the discs and reduces braking efficiency, no idea if that is true or not. I was told to brake very firmly at least some of the time but being taught by the army meant more time predicting a stop than braking for one.

This was very definitely down to overheating.

This was very definitely down to overheating. Seized calipers, causing brakes to bind and overheat? Just like running a Silver Shadow...

No calipers were fine. The fronts are 4 pots and the rears 2 pots so no sliders to stick and the pistons wound back without force. All four are under two years old. I suspect the discs were slightly glazed from the previous calipers and have got worse due to me having to press harder than I should have to get stopped. Add hills and towing into the mix and I think that is the cause.

And on that note, this topic will be drawing to a close. I have had a huge amount of fun with my 90, but I have the 110 project in the garage that needs my attention and I am getting too old to be crawling around on the floor in the middle of winter, constantly spannering my daily driver out of necessity. I wouldn't say it has been horrendously unreliable, but these old things require lots of periodic maintenance and tinkering with. Defender is now up for sale and I have put a deposit down on this. www.autotrader.co.uk/van-details/202012016655641?fromSavedAds=true&advertising-location=at_cars

My driveway needs some attention if you can help? Mine genuinely does, the tarmac at the bottom is breaking up. You're going to have months of your year spare now!! That's a huge amount of chrome..... It's going to feel very luxurious after the LR, I hope it's as expected/hoped. Is it basically the same as the Pajero Sport underneath? I rented one in Thailand and it looks the same inside.
