It has been a while since I went to buy a new car butI was asked to go along with a nurse to a Kia dealer, she was interested in a Sportage. The innitial interest from sales staff was low but she stood in the middle of the showroom and shouted that she wanted to buy a new car, if they could spare the time from the coffee and buscuits. I think it was the general manager who dragged a salesman over but he spoiled it a bit by suggesting the nurse pay £50 for a test drive, non refundable.
Sara changed her motability car every three years and the service was variable from dealer to dealer. The best and worst was the Renault dealer in Tamworth but she was very happy with the cars and servicing side.
I generally got more interest when I took Sara in Bess, people tend to find Bess more interesting than a modern when parked next to the showroom.

Worst experiences for me were Stratstone and Grange when I made enquiries on an XE-S – zero sign that they were interested in selling me a car despite repeated contacts by me.
I've had generally crap experience in VW dealers over the years as well.

I think the worst we've had was when we were choosing between a Ford Kuga and a Qashqai a couple or three years ago. We went to the Ford dealership in Newcastle (Arnold Clarke - which is Gaelic for shite service). The fat fucker of a Ford salesman could barely be arsed to get off his seat, insisted he couldn't compete on price with the petrol Qashqai and then proceeded to inform us that a 1.2 turbo engine couldn't possibly pull a car of that size without it having reliability problems - seemingly oblivious to Ford's own engine downsizing programme with models as large as the Mondeo. Fortunately, after test driving the Kuga we preferred the Qashqai anyway as a nicer drive.

I hate it when the sales guys try to bullshit you about the merits of what they are selling against the other options you are considering. I'll be the judge of that, thanks, so put a sock in it.

Day 1 sales school - A negative sale usually does not work. Stick to the positives of what you can do, not the negatives that you think the competitors can't do. Day 2 sales school - don't over promise on what you can deliver. Day 3 sales school - don't bullshit Seems too many car sales people never attended or never paid attention.

Spot on PG.
The 5 Series launch had too much Bullshit, apparently the XDrive system reads the road ahead and adapts to the conditions. One of the presenters was a bit negative about the competition as well, which raised a few laughs, but I really don't like that.

I think I'd like to be able to go into a main dealer and, regardless if it's service or sales, speak with someone who knows the cars and has enthusiasm for the marque and cars in general. Is that a bit too much to ask?
Simon - once a date is arranged, I will let you know.

I've only experienced that twice Stu, the first time was the Sales Manager at Bluebell BMW in Crewe when we bought the 130i and the second was the salesman at Porsche Silverstone.

Oddly enough, a non sales item. When the plug and play sat nav went belly up a few years ago, I was near enough to ask in the local (to my destination) BMW showroom. They were more than helpful wanting a look around my yellow beastie that took in a cup of coffee and a biscuit. I also missed, through the marvels of local knowledge, a big traffic snafu.

Is that a bit too much to ask? I've had such enthusiasm at a Renault dealer (best example was for a test drive of a Megane 250 - "I've sorted out a great route and found an off-camber bend with a great view so you can really see what the car does"), Mini dealer - not only did the sales girl know all about the Mini range, she also knew all about the Astra VXR I turned up in and the Scirocco which was the other car in the frame at the time - if only she had been the one selling the Scirocco, aforementioned Mazda dealer and Vauxhall dealer - it does make a huge difference.

That is simply what a good salesperson should do. Size up the customer and talk to them in the manner that will help get a sale. Car enthusiast who knows their stuff - be the same (of course this assumes you do know your stuff.......). Little old lady - focus on positives for her. Simples! But sadly lacking in way too many people who sell for a living.

I have just been subject to some very good salesmanship.
I came in this morning to a video of a Tanzanite blue M4 Competition from the BMW dealer/salesman I use and a short message to say if I want to drive the car they can bring it over to the office or I can call in to see it. I wasn't really thinking about changing mine right now until I got the video. No sunroof, comfort entry, folding mirrors, adaptive lights or heated steering wheel though. It also has no rear privacy glass but I think it looks good especially with the dark colour. The car can be found on Autotrader at the moment but for some reason isn't on the approved BMW used site (yet)

I've got a bit of a thing for the competition pack M3/4 currently. Hated the wheels when they came out but think they look fabulous now.

I thought all m3/m4 now had the extended leather cabin (centre console, dash topper and doors) - I assume it's actually an expensive option ?.
At that money - I wouldn't want the common or garden placcky interior.

At that money - I wouldn't want the common or garden placcky interior. The full leather is a big step up in quality for the interior but it is also a good bit more money. The attraction of that particular car (apart from it being my favourite colour) was that it was priced keenly. I reckon it could have been had for a figure which started with a 4.
Is it better than this though, with its slightly odd pricing? www.mercedes-benz.net/p/uk/en/used-cars/mercedes-amg-c-63-saloon/682839ce28cf66d6f2dcc7ad2ee053d9?gsOutletId=GS0001742&accountID=dairetuk42201&companyId=GC0013448&allGsOutletIds=GS0001742,GS0001608,GS0012446,GS0015021,GS0008592,GS0014237,GS0015293,GS0014089,GS0016081&dealerGroup=false

Black, silver/grey or orange leather is standard. Full leather in those standard three colours is £1,330 and covers the dash too. If you want an Individual leather colour, you can either go for just the upholstery at £255, or also add the full leather dash which is separately available as an Individual option and costs £1,075.
That's why I gave it a miss on the GC. Apart from the fact that, as an Individual option, it badly affects delivery times, it also adds zilch to the GFV, so disproportionately increases your monthlies on a PCP.

I'm also the same, really didn't like the wheels, but I've seen a few now out on the road and I think they look fantastic. The leather dash would be essential for me.

After having the leather dash in the M5 (and the Z1), I was of a similar view but then didn't have the choice with the M135i and now realise that, all things being equal, my life is able to continue without a leather dashboard. It's a nice-to-have rather than an essential.

I agree with you on the M135i, but when you're spending around £60k on an M3/M4 it needs the extra help to feel worth it.

Yeah I'm kind of sold on the leather dash thing since having one; all the E92s in my AT Garage have extended leather, too.

Is the choice between a plastic dashboard top and a leather dashboard top in a mass produced car the ultimate first world problem? If I'm paying £60k for an M3/4 I'm paying that for the engine, handling and performance.

Unless I had stacks of cash I wouldn't spec it on a new car but I would look for it in a used car.
