Herself's MINI developed what is a common problem with these, leaking coolant from the thermostat housing. Our local independant was booked solid for the next few weeks, so we decided to drop it in at our local MINI centre to get the job done. On a couple of previous occaisions when the car has been in for non-routine service work, such as brake pads, they have said that the oil needed topping up and charged us something like £15 for half a litre of oil. Keen to avoid this, I made sure the oil was topped up right to the top line on the dipstick immediately before the car made its 10 mile journey to Stratford.
Needless to say, they phoned Herself part way through the day saying that the oil needed topping by by half a litre. She told them not to bother. I checked the oil when I got home and of course it was exactly where I had left it a few hours earlier.
Clearly this is little short of a scam being run by Rybrook MINI to charge for work which is not needed; and they have provided us with doucmented proof of their attempted fiddle by mentioning the refused 'need' for an oil top up on the paperwork. Someone from the garage always phones the next day to ask how it went, so Herself read them their fortune. The rather shocked chap on the phone was apparently in a bit of a fluster and said that he would have to "speak to Simon" and get back to us. Although this is not a big ticket item, it has completely destroyed our trust and confidence in the garage and they have been made aware that any future suggestions they make for additional work will have to be independantly verified before we give them to go-ahead.

That's very poor, isn't it?

Sounds like a certain car hire firm that used to increase charges due to "We managed to trickle fill the tank so we are charging you £10" or whatever extra, no way to get that back at the time but I know they were kicked stupid until they stopped.
Perhaps a letter to the CEO and Mini headquarters UK or even BMW. It would not look good in the public domain.

Dealership has tasked the service manager to maximise income from run of the mill available sources. Actually feel sorry for the service guys themselves at Main dealerships as they just want to look after your car nicely: they get paid for the day no matter what other thieving bollocks the principle and his management team come up with. It's not like BMW dealer workshops are running at half capacity!

Roadrunner , I am very sorry that you are unhappy with your recent visit and thank you for bringing this to my attention. We are reviewing all the paperwork, Citnow Video of the vehicle health check and telephone calls. Our service manager has been in contact this afternoon to discuss your comments in person and find a resolution as promptly as possible. Once again we are very sorry that you are unhappy with your recent experience.

Presumably the ‘Citnow’ video far all customers who have recently been offered an oil top-up can be reviewed to see if they might have been charged for something they didn’t need?

If nothing else, Rybrook have a very active internet monitoring policy in place.
Unfortunately it is often the small things that make the biggest and most lasting impressions.

Complete and utter dishonesty that deserves to be reported to BMW head office and, quite frankly, plastered all over your Facebook page and Twitter feeds. You're a disgrace and your standard corporate apology on here is rather pathetic.

It's very corporatespeak to apologise for someone being unhappy, rather than for what you actually did. Which makes it a non-apology in my book.

That's pretty shocking behaviour.
And even if you did need the oil £15 for 500ml seems a pretty steep price!

It seems that an increasing number of businesses are taking advantage of customers lack of in depth checking invoices. After all a little oil in a service can easily be lost. Being polite see's them thinking we are all stupid.

The biggest crime here as I see it is recording the refusal as this then implies a less than fastidious owner to any future reader when the opposite is true. It’s utterly dishonest of Rybrook Mini Stratford and I hope trading standards become involved so that they might start operating a more professional and trustworthy business in future. Utterly disgraceful way to treat customers.

I got charged very nearly £150 for an MOT by Audi a few weeks ago, which shocked me a bit. That included some oil, too. I hardly ever check the oil on my car because when I used to it had never used a drop, so I was surprised when they said it was low. Maybe the dealer I used runs the same scam? What's shocked and surprised me the most about this post is, you paid it!!

How is that possible??? I use the local Jag dealer for my servicing, and they don't charge for the MOT.

The Subaru dealer I use charges the full £54-odd now , where they used to charge only £30; but their charges have gone up quite substantially over the past few years for whatever reason(s). Bad as they are, they still don't charge £15 per half-litre of oil!

My main dealer charges about £50 for a stand-alone MOT.

Mine charges the full £55 normally, but gives loyal customers a £10 discount voucher.

I'm always happier if the garage doing the MOT charges the full fee. What would the point be of a garage losing money on every MOT if they were not going to be looking to make up their losses on finding work to charge for?

As long as the work is legitimate.

I refuse to pay full price for an MOT. I've not paid more than £30 for at least 5 years or so.

Our local indy charges 25 quid and has done for all of the last 4 or 5 years I have been using them. They NEVER push for work and are seemingly very relaxed about it. They do get fully booked very quickly so perhaps going for volume and providing good serice results in returning customers for the work that really pays.

I did not get charged for Bess's last ever MOT, I know it will sound lazy but the number of times problems have been found short of a stop by her maj's constabulary make me wonder what will happen to a number of older cars. Ignorance is bliss perhaps?
