If someone buys a £40K+ car, then trades it in quickly for whatever reason and you then buy it lightly used for £34K, do you still get lumbered with the big VED bills, or do they only apply to the first owner? You get lumbered, it's time not owner related. This is a crazy system. You could have two used Arteons for sale and one could have a lower tax bill purely because the first owner negotiated a slightly better discount.

My understanding is it's based on list price so you could negotiate a deal less than £40k but still get the tax.

The price of the first is chortlesome. I should be able to retire now if only I'd kept my Rover 100... Cropley says this week that in recent times, half of all cars going through high-priced classic car sales have not been sold, and that he thinks the bubble's bursting - overoptimistic sellers and increasingly cautious buyers. Though of course those who're looking to buy, hoping to turn a profit from what they have bought or looking to sell know differently... You'd have to remove the pony from the second! Three immediately obvious things - remove the pony, remove the incorrect V8 badges from the front wings and replace the badge on the throttle body with the correct one. After that, I'd be very carefully checking the subframes as in years to come a skilled fabricator will be needed to make replacements. I'd love another, though.

I did wonder at the time whether you'd have been better having it drained of fluids and dry stored, but hindsight is wonderful like that! The Rover ones were incredibly rare so it's not surprise they want 30 grand for it.

I don't think it's that bad and it looks better when the milk container isn't on the front, but it lives in the utility with the other non built in appliances (and the cat!) so it's not an issue anyway.

Special Edition Jeep Renegade in Autocar, £28,600 OTR, with a few options £30,400, trade value after 9 months £13,300. It does start at £18k, at least. The SE version still makes you stump up £700 for a vaguely mock Olive Drab paint scheme, and only comes with 2015 sat nav maps. You have to pay extra for the current ones. On your fucking bike...

Mercedes want £495 for a heated washer system on a £60K E43!
In this country and much of the rest of the world, a heated washer should be standard, not an extra. Imagine spraying liquid ice onto your screen at 70mph!
Even worse, if you are buying a used Merc E Class (no doubt also applies to other cars of E Class and below) you are going to have to be on your toes to make sure you look for such essential extras. I'd rather they went back to charging you extra for a door mirror - at least that's obvious.

I thought the same when I first looked at the new E, but it includes a heated windscreen so is reasonable value. It is poor if you don't get heated washers as standard, but I couldn't work out if that's true or not.
With the Premium/Premium Plus packs it's a lot easier to get a Mercedes with a decent spec than it is with most of the competition.

Everywhere I have looked, it states heated washer system but delving into the Mercedes website shows that it includes a heated screen too, so that's OK. It really isn't very clear about heated washers without the package though!

Since when did heated washers become an essential item? I don’t think any of my cars have had them. All BMW's have them and so did the Mercs I have had in the past (although on the C230, it was part of a winter pack).
Even with plenty of washer fluid, the nozzles can still freeze because of the chill factor of bowling along at 60 or 70mph. When my daily commute used to be 25miles in the morning driving into the sun and the same back at night, headlight washers and heated washers became essential: A low sun, spray from lorries and no means to clear the screen meant on a few occasions putting my head out the window to see where I was going - a horrible panicky feeling as your vision is obliterated in 10 seconds and you are totally blind on a dual carriageway. I wouldn't buy a car without them.
On my Mk2 GTi, before heated washers were available, I bought a heat exchanger for the washers - it took heat from the radiator hose and transferred it to the washer bottle - not perfect by any means but a big improvement.

I am aware of what can happen - I usually just use neat alcohol based washer fluid in a strong enough concentration so it doesn't happen. The Volvo V40 washer jets were above the exhaust manifold so didn't freeze, but I wouldn't specifically call them heated washer jets. I can't say for certain whether the Mercedes had them or not, but I wouldn't not buy a car because it didn't have them.

Mercedes have had heated washer jets for a long time; even my old 1989 190 had them. They used to be standard, but now seem to have been dropped from the standard list.

Water cannot experience wind chill! Washer fluid in the right mixture will have enough methanol in it to prevent it freezing anyway...
What I'd like to know is how much BMW charge for auto lights because I've seen three modern 5 series' in the last few days tooling along in the dark with only the front DRLs on.

Even when I put enough screen wash in (I use VW stuff) to protect down to -15 it still freezes at the nozzles at speed. About 7 or 8 years ago we had a couple of winters when the temperature was down to -15 regularly and it wasn't above freezing all day for weeks on end. The good thing was it was so cold the roads were dry with no spray.

I remember that winter very well, as our spaniel got a torsion exactly ten days before Christmas, and we had to rush him in to Vet's Now at Charing Cross in 2 feet of icy snow! I might have pictures saved of the Legacy's external temp gauge reading -19C one morning .. .. .

They do - it really isn't too difficult! The auto lights/only DRLs on thing is common across a whole range of cars. BMW have taken to hiding the light switch behind the steering wheel and I'm guessing quite a few owners have never really looked at it, save to locate it for when it gets dark.

When they give you the car it's set to Auto and I've never touched the switch.
