Speaking of black and round, I now have (sort of) a tyre fitting and balancing machine, so I can now buy all my tyres online and not have to pay someone to fit and balance them for me. I forgot how easy and how much fun mounting tyres was.

There she blows. As I said, not strictly speaking 'mine', but only myself and 2 others are trained to use it. It would be rude not to use it to my own advantage, as I'm sure almost everybody else at work is going to do..

That was one of the advantages I had working at a garage - even as the accountant. While I didn't use the machine there were plenty around who could on my behalf.

By way of an update on my PS4S tyres on the M3 - I would now say that they definitely provide a little more steering feel (not night and day, but definitely noticeable), continue to ride really nicely (again not night and day, but noticeable) and are nicely predictable in the current mixed November conditions. I would definitely recommend them now.
Nice machine Blarno!

I'm weighing up whether to go for a set of Crossclimates as a winter set of tyres for the VRS. A second set of wheels would be good but I'm happy to use the one set, as I did with the V60.
Martin, did you get Crossclimates for the R?

Martin, did you get Crossclimates for the R? I’m going to go for the Continental All Seasons as they are a slightly better all rounder based on a recent Auto Express / Auto Bild test of all season tyres. New wheels arrived on Saturday, so will get them next weekend.

Even better than Crossclimate?! I will have a read of the test.

Blackcircles have 10% off today, for Cyber Monday. 369.34 delivered for Crossclimate+ in 225 40 18 for the VRS. Having read the Autobild results I will still go with Crossclimate I think, even though other manufacturers have caught them up now. I was very impressed with them last winter.

They do look good overall, only really let down by the aquaplaning performance.
I assumed the Auto Bild and Autoexpress tests were the same, but the results are slightly different.
Not a surprise but the vRS tyre size is the same as the 18s on the Golf. Blackcircles don’t have the Contis but I’ve found them elsewhere for £100 each delivered. The 10% deal is good, but they’ve been offering £40 off a set of 4 Michelin’s for a while.

As it happens, I discovered I (badly) need a new front O/S tyre, so off to ebay I went. I could get a brand new budget tyre in my size for £35 delivered, then discovered a large outlet in Kent that sells partworns of all flavours. Got this pair of Goodyear EfficientGrips (albeit of 2 different eras and tread patterns) with 5.8 and 6.5mm of tread and no repairs for £50 delivered. Total no brainer and now I can do both front tyres at the same time.
Thankfully the SAAB doesn't eat tyres like the Mondeo did (Fronts have done 20k+ and the rears were new in May) so I shouldn't have to do this very often.

I couldn't improve on Blarno's post. It covered all the essential components of a good innuendo.

I'm worried that Blarno is mounting without using fresh rubber.

My car had 4 new Bridgestone S001 runflats fitted yesterday by the main dealer for £816 all in, including a courtesy car (cheaper than online). The old tyres did (IMHO) an extraordinary 30,000 miles and still had tread left...and they were regularly tested for grip in a whole variety of conditions and circumstances. It is amazing how light the steering now feels and also how much better the car rides.
I also really appreciate the 5 year servicing plan my car came with since it also had a brake fluid change FOC and they checked out the EGR cooler which is OK apparently. In 4 years running this car, the only things I have paid for are tyres, fuel and 2 wiper blades. It must be the cheapest car to run that I have ever had.
I know everyone derides Arnold Clark (who own the dealership I now use) but I have never had anything other than excellent service from them - a mechanic did forget to put the top back on my expansion tank and left a torch attached to the bottom of the car but that was sorted in an exemplary manner when I complained.

I’ve got S001s on my summer wheels and traction is excellent in the dry, much better than you’d expect. They’re the second most expensive option (£1080 a set), but they’re wearing pretty well with 4mm left on the rears and 5mm on the fronts after 18,500 miles. It will be difficult to go for something else, even though I could save £200 a set.
My mileage is too high to take full advantage of the service pack, I only had 2 services in the 535d as it went over 50k miles before the brake fluid needed changing. Still good value though, but not so much now it’s been reduced to 36k miles, apart from on the 7 where it’s stilll 50k miles and included in the list price

Another shout out for the PS4s. I've done enough miles in the Gorilla to say this:
Far quieter than the Hankooks that preceded them (the car had new Hankooks on it when I collected it) Ride far better than the Hankooks. Feel much better than the Hankooks Wet weather grip far better than the Hankooks. Overall composure a different planet than on Hankooks.
Not really a surprise as the car is set up with Michelins as OE. I can't wait to blast it up the Captain's Drive in the Springtime Trial.

I do low mileage, but the tyres have definitely improved with a little wear - not massively, but the front end is definitely even stronger. Good tyres.
I gather that Goodyear is going to have a serious crack at a competitor.

Goodyear are going head to head across the range with Michelin from eco tyres to cups. Great news that it’ll either up the tyre game further or drag the price of Michelin’s down slightly

Wow - that's very good, Simon! What make would those be, though? Presumably not Michelins, Goodyears or Contis?

I find the P Zero's to be awful in the colder damper conditions of winter, on my wife's car. I am currently looking for an alternative tyre and am slightly floored by the idea of paying £1,000 for 4 Bridgestones S001 or about £50 less for 4 Goodyears of unknown type. (sizes are 275/35 x 20 and 245/40 x 20)

It has Bridgestones on it at the moment and I’m happy with them, so am going to go with the same again when the rears need replacing, which isn’t be very long. The Goodyear’s are mid range tyres, OK comfort wise but not brilliant. I had them on the 535d, but only because they were the only option in that size and load rating. The Bridgestones are worth the extra £50 a tyre imo.
