My watch looks very inadequate by the time I get to the end of this thread - I guess it's the equivalent of a never cared for 02 plate Fiesta - but in the same way that the average owner of such a car just wants it to get from A to B all I ask of my watch is that it tells the time which it always has done very accurately.

It seems to depend what watch you put in it. We have ours on a bureau in the spare room (which is next to ours) and if it has my wife's small Datejust or my Carrera in it, you can't hear it unless you are in the same room. But for whatever reason, if you put my Milgauss in it, it makes a much louder rocking sound - I have to keep the spare room door shut at night or else I can hear it. It's not like the Milgauss is heavier than the Carrera so far as I can tell so I have no idea why. It seems quiet enough to have by the bed. You can hear it if you put your face in front of it, but it's in an open-fronted IKEA unit by the bedside and about 1m from my head but I can't hear it at night. Whether this is true in winter when all the windows are closed remains to be seen.

Well our one was free about 4 yrs ago, so maybe it is not as sophisticated as yours.

Probably looks nicer - it looks like something that Roger Moore would be happy with! And I wasn't meaning to criticise yours by comparison btw - hope it didn't come across that way but I can see it might.

Thanks Simon. I'll have a look at Fleabay. It's been a while since I bought a watch and I'm trying to fight the temptation at the moment. This isn't helping Traverse display can be swapped from light on dark to dark on light, btw. But not Essential.

I was disappointed to note that although Tiso are listed as a retailer the one in Dundee has none in, I just wanted to see how comedically large it looked on my girlie wrist before committing to a purchase!!

Yes - local retailers carried bugger all to. Traverse, on my hardly substantial wrists. I think I prefer the Essential overall, but am happy with it:
I think you acclimatise quite quickly - I thought the TAG was borderline when I got it, but don't bat an eyelid now.

Do I need to be in the Cotswolds for that? If so then there won't be any within 400 miles!

There was one at each end of the Great Glen Way when I did it, so they exist in Scotland. (it's a chain of outdoor stores!)

If it's any consolation, I just dropped my Rolex off at Watches of Switzerland for a rather overdue service...£505 and takes 4-6 weeks... Ouch. Bet it if goes to switzerland it ends up more than £505,they will find a few faults that need seeing to and you end up with £1000 service bill.Been there done it . lovely watch, not into watches especially but the milgaus is one of my favourites . Catching up on this, I got the finalised quote back from the Rolex workshop in Switzerland after they had inspected it...
£455 for the full service £42 for a new crown (apparently the old one was damaged)
...plus an optional £422 for a new glass - the existing glass has a very teeny scratch on it if you look hard enough. I have declined this option...
So hopefully no nasty surprises.

The glass on my watch was £35! It's not glass on high end watches it's polished sapphire crystal.

Apologies, then! Essential is 'non-smart', have a usual watch battery life and you can change the battery yourself. Traverse models are 'smart' as well and have a battery life of 100 or so hours. You get used to leaving them to charge overnight very easily. Essential case is 49.1mm, Traverse is 50. Tim, Traverse battery seems rather more capacious. Two days in and it's showing 89%. I do like it when things are better than advertised.

Well, as I said, I didn't bother. I know which scratch they mean and it's so tiny you don't notice unless you actively peer closely at the glass.
Whether it's because the sapphire crystal on mine has an unusual green tint to it, I don't know, but I suspect it's expensive either way.

Thanks Simon. I was in Perth at the weekend and popped into the Tiso shop there, they had a few on display. Helpfully I was wearing my cheapo Casio something that is a decent size and the Suunto ones were only slightly larger so unlikely to make me look completely like a little boy wearing his dad's watch!
Now I need to decide between the graphite one and the sapphire black. Not sure why the latter is more expensive!

Try sportsshoes.com for Suunto, too. No idea what their range is like, but I know they sell them.

There is a custom build section at Suunto's website, and I think that different materials have different costs - might help?
www.suunto.com/en-GB/Customize-your-sports-watch/Suunto-Customizer/?product=traverse#customize-design
Go on - go for it!
Been on hold since Friday and the watch shows 79% left on the battery still. Helped by display turning off when you aren't wearing it - sensor driven no doubt. Have used the compass to verify directions against map when walking, thereby completely justifying the purchase, no?

Yeah, the compass will come in handy when I'm walking along the (dead straight) beach at St Andrews Sounds like the justification version of man maths (man justification? Not sure that sounds quite right!).

Cool. Knurled front bezel? Have you got your head around the menu yet? I have date/battery on the time screen, altitude on barometer and N/NW etc on the compass one. 64% battery left after just over seven complete days, which equates a battery life of the best part of 20 days, not the advertised four or so. Did you eBay, btw?
I hope you are happy with it - I'll feel responsible if not!

No, the bezel is smooth, there are just a lot of lights dotted around in here.
I'm at the lower slopes of learning how to use it so the menu is still a place of mystery and intrigue!
I am happy, my only concern is that I feel a bit like a 5 year old wearing his dad's watch at the moment but that'll pass, just as long as nobody thinks I have 'short man syndrome' which has been how I've interpreted some small men wearing big watches (although usually the ultra-shiny bling ones).

There's a full user manual on the support section of the Suunto website - I'd recommend a quick shuffle at that.

So I got my Milgauss back today. And I must say that I am very impressed. For £497, it does literally look like new (as you would hope, frankly, for that much money). I am not one to mollycoddle things just because they cost a lot – I absolutely operate on the principle that there is no point owning something if you don't use it for its intended purpose – and therefore after 8 years of daily wear for pretty much anything and everything, it had started to look, shall we say, decidedly patinated. The case and bracelet were not just scuffed, dulled and scratched (quite deeply in places), but the case was actually the proud possessor of a couple of dents. Not any more – looks completely immaculate and has a refreshed two year warranty.

That's good, then. I'm hoping I'll get away with just replacing the strap when my mechanical starts to look a bit weary.
Tim, I forgot to mention - did you download the Suunto app to your mobile? You will need to in order to pair them, which allows fitness tracking (which I don't use) but also sends caller ID and texts etc to the watch. It's called Suunto Movescount and it's there at the Google Play store - I'm sure there's an Apple version if you are that way inclined!

Killing time in Bicester Village last Sunday afternoon (we found ourselves driving past on the M40 back to London and, having clocked that it didn't shut until 7pm, my wife insisted we stop so she could indulge in some retail therapy), I wandered into the TAG boutique and had a good look at TAG's Connected smart-watch. It's quite cool and I like that it looks more like a watch than some others, but at 46mm width and bulky with it, it's simply way too large. It might be made of titanium and be feather-weight as a result, but it simply looked ridiculous on my girly wrist.
