Tested a fully loaded Jaguar fpace 3.0 diesel and a very well loaded BMW x5 3.0 .Jaguar was a 2021 car and BMW 2019.
The jaguar I honestly went into buy.Read the reviews like the look and the new interior looked good in the photos and the size is good as in not too big for these types of cars.
I ended up not liking the Jag,the engine and gearbox and handling were all very very good and the infotainment system was excellent but the ride was just too firm for this type of car and the interior was a bit of a let down .The reality is the my cayenne which is 2013 is a much much better car .
THe BMW x5 was in a different ballpark ,the interior was much better and the ride significantly better .Comfort is my prime concern with these as I still have the gt3 for fun.The only downside was the sheer size of it,it dwarfs the Cayenne .
The only other option is a macan but finding a good spec one is so difficult ,but I know the BMW will drop its value at a tremendous rate whereas the macan will retain its value much better (although a well specced 2019 Macan is about 10k more than the X5 which I looked at.)

Interesting. One of my best friends has a 69-plate F-Pace 3.0d and they love it, but I agree that when I sat and had a poke about in one, I didn’t particularly like it. I’d rather have a Velar with the same mechanicals.
Diesel Macans do exist but only as Gen 1 cars I think.

The F Pace's problem is simply that there are cars from the same company (JLR) that do it better and have had much more invested into them. The Velar almost fills the same market segment of being like a RR but a bit sleeker and sportier, which is what the Jag side of the stable is supposed to be offering. They will cost more but one of those with the 3.0 diesel could be worth a look if you liked that powertrain.

One of our neighbours has a X3 M40i. I can tell when it starts up, because it sounds very similar to my car, just a bit quieter. Even my wife noticed that. It’s not the most dashing bit of automotive design, but then by current BMW standards it is at least not blessed with a face like a naked mole rat.

Current x3, x5 and 5 series are about the only vaguely attractive cars bmw currently make.

Sorry if I missed something but given why is another Cayenne not an option?
Interested on a personal level as well as once the house build is done and we've recovered from the pain a new 'family' car is on the cards and my partner far prefers sitting higher - hence an SUV is likely to be towards the top of the list

I would have absolutely loved an Alpina B4 Gran Coupe and did make an enquiry, but it was over £90k OTR and the monthlies came in at the best part of £900, so it was not happening.

Yesterday was a macan s which I am going back to drive as I didn’t want to waste their time if the dogs didn’t fit so I’m going back with the dogs .
Audi sq5 ,unfortunately wanted to test one with air suspension but couldn’t .engine is amazing but the steering was devoid of feel and the ride brittle .
RR velar 3.0d hse , what a lovely relaxing car to drive ,if you want to waft around in comfort and style it was a very nice thing . Not sure how it deals with the fun side though ,but a very very nice car and goes into the ‘very possibly ‘ category .

so tried the Macan 's' a 2019 with a mega spec and just paid a deposit on it.Comfortable and fun and I can see why they always win the group tests and why Racing (rightly) decided to keep the one he went for.
I had very particular sepc requirements which were almost impossible to find in the price range ,in fact there were 2 cars in the whole of the uk ,One in aberdeen and one 8 miles from me which met those needs.
The colour is very unlike me as it's quite loud and I am really usually boring colour wise but I like it (miami blue) in fact it was a colour I considered doing the gt3 in back when I bought it.
spec is very good about 20k in options.

Congrats! Having become something of an expert on Macan prices of late, that’s a very decent price for a 2019 S with that spec. The colour is marmite as you say, which has a bearing on that. But it you like it, then happy days.
Turns out Macans are super spec-sensitive - if they lack something crucial like a pano roof or BOSE, it knocks off way more than the intrinsic cost of that option new. And “different” colours like python green or crayon are problematic.

I have all of the above barring the torque vectoring and painted key, but then have a couple of other things like 18-way seats, wireless charging and the expensive dark wood trim, and it came to £10k’s of options on my GTS. It’s one reason why I went for the GTS - once you’d optioned both up to match, there wasn’t much in it, and the GTS has better residuals.

Yes the gts is a no brainer new, didn’t even look at used prices for gts as they will be higher and I don’t need the extra performance . Is air standard n gts ? It was so hard to find a car with air / Bose and 14 way comforts .

It wasn’t standard on the GTS until Gen III (so 2021 onwards). Gen II cars like yours needed it optioning.
Having read various tests that recommended doing so, I opted to replace the lowered version of air suspension that is standard on a Gen III GTS with the standard air suspension (a no-cost option).
Yes I spent ages looking at used ones but every time I spotted what looked like the perfect car, it would be lacking something like BOSE or air suspension or privacy glass, or in one case, the panoramic roof.

God help us if an SUV becomes the forum car of choice! This forum started up partly to abuse SUV's I have to say though that this, the Cayenne, and the SVR F Pace are about the only ones I'd ever consider . Its a lovely colour Franki - embrace the loudness! A shame the F Pace was so stiff - this sort of car needs to be comfortable on UK roads, they are only getting worse. My boxster is supposed to be the most comfortable - on 18" wheels with active suspension - I find it spine destroying on poor roads compared to the XFR. All SUV's are compromised in out and out handling - they should stop chasing track times with overly stiff suspension and make then nice to drive, the way they will be driven. £55k for a 3-4 year old compact SUV however is a good example of why I'll keep both my current cars as long as I economically can.....

When we went to pick ours up, it was next to a Cayenne in PTS BRG and it looked gorgeous - Mrs RT asked why we hadn’t gone for that colour and went silent when I said it cost £5.5k extra (given that metallic paint is £685 anyway).

Wasn’t Miami blue just a slightly more expensive colour (like Carmine or Crayon) for a while rather than PTS? I’m pretty sure it was on the facelift, then dropped for the facelifted facelift….
Racing - Re essential options, did the dealer advise against removing most of the ‘GTS’ bits from a GTS? (no Race-tex, S rather than GTS suspension) and not adding something like PTV, which should be standard on a GTS anyway? I wouldn’t choose anything I didn’t want just because of (someone’s view of) the impact to resale value, just curious.
