Any spotted today? I’ve only driven about 3 miles and didn’t spot any, but last few years it’s sometimes taken me a week to spot a newly introduced reg.

First one went out at 10:00 yesterday, not seen any out on the road though. Are midnight new reg parties a thing of the past? I know my local Vauxhall dealer always used to do this - those who were really keen to be the first on the road with a new reg would drive off at a minute past midnight.

Never been a thing for my time in the motor trade, my older colleague tells me things about it every so often, it seemed more a thing with the 1 plate change a year as opposed to the twice yearly change now. TBH most people don't care about the plate change now, they just want their car ASAP.

When my wife worked in the motor trade the 1st August used to be a nightmare. The volume of cars going out meant they had to hire external storage and shuttle them between there and the showroom. The lack of time meant PDI checks were neglected and became almost a cursory once over. The actual night had a great a buzz about it but the weeks running up were just long days of hassle and mild panic.

Returned to UK yesterday after being away since July. First 72 was a Honda CR-V in Sainsbury’s car park today as I restocked a very empty larder and fridge.

One of our Directors at work got his new car yesterday, black Tesla Model Y with black wheels (looks pretty dire IMHO), first and so far the only 72-plate vehicle I have seen. It's quite a step up from the 10-plate somewhat battered Focus that he's been driving around in

A Ssangyong Musso pick-up yesterday, and an EV Mokka this morning. Pretty thin on the ground round here it seems.

Not aware of having seen any until today, when a trip on the M6 has revealed an electric Kia, a BMW X3 and LR Discovery.

A black Renault Arkana parked near my house this morning. It’s been there all week but I only noticed the 72-plate this morning….

Still not seen one. Going to the Lake District this weekend though so I'll probably see 300 72 reg LR products.

Sat behind a BMW X2 S-Drive 18d this morning.
Is the first digit dropped because it's an X-car or a change for all models? Just wondered.

Well no, the point of the X cars is to tap into the fashion trend for higher SUV lookalike vehicles. . If you go onto the BMW website to configure your car the standard FWD or RWD models are referred to as S-Drive to differentiate them from the X-Drive models. This stretches to the X1 and X2 where they offer cheaper, S-Drive models, for those that want to the look but don't need the 4WD (which, let's be honest, would apply to most of us).

I think what I meant was, that X-Drive was meant to denote the fact the car was 4WD, like the original X5. No matter, I'm not likely to be in the market for an X2, whatever the drivetrain!

It changed a few years ago. Originally the X models were all 4wd so it didn't matter but when they went downsize they introduced 2wd versions hence S-drive. This only appears to apply to X models though. My 430d is just that, not an S-Drive whereas the 4wd version is an X-Drive. Clear?
