Agreed on the looks. As a previous 1988 CRX owner I can confirm this engine will be epic and never fail. I might set a web-cam up at my local Honda dealer (much beloved by the Epsom, Ewell and Cheam blue rinse brigade since I was a boy) to see the faces of regular customers when kids with skinny trousers and hoops in their ears rock up for a test drive and PCP quote.

I'm not sure about the front, there's something a bit bulbous about it and the overhang looks too long. But it's a lot less shouty than the FK8 certainly.
Of course it will blow everything else in that segment out of the water.
According to the article it goes on sale in Japan in early 2023 which means we're unlikely to see it before this time next year.
The previous model went on sale for a fiver under £31k in 2017; this one will be the wrong side of £40k I expect.

Oh yes I’m really liking that.
Just watched the carwow video - it’s so much better than the old one .

I like it too, although it's quite a big and wide car.
I had a bit of a play with the driver of the previous (FK8) model last Sunday, I was out for a drive in the Yaris and caught up with the Civic on a twisty road. When the driver saw me in their mirror, they sped up and took nice lines through corners (i.e. they drove well, not like a knob) and we had a nice little spirited drive for the next five miles or so, before they turned off.
I can see the appeal.

Weirdly, no Type R has interested me since the original (IE first officially imported to the UK) breadvan of 2001. I drove both that and the spaceship model and the breadvan was far superior. Everything since then has got a bit Max Power. I'm sure they're endlessly reliable and brilliant to drive, but I look enough of a twat without driving a car that makes me look more so.

I like that they've gone down an inch on wheel size (20 to 19) to reduce unsprung weight.

Not sure the 2001 model was classed as an import given it came from Swindon!
Agree though that the models since have been a bit outlandish but it has set them aside from some of the bland competition which was often not dissimilar from the regular models they were based on. I think this new one gets the balance a bit better than the last generation.

Sounds fab, but I agree with Ed about the colour-choice. Why the obsession with cement-grey all of a sudden is beyond me. It looks crap.

It's clearly going to be a serious weapon. But like all Type R's, if there was a "delete rear-spoiler" option, it would look way, way better.

White doesn't do it any favours - it makes the side view of the A pillar onwards look very heavy and square

Might have to be Black and then get the wheels refurbed to grey or Gold to stop it looking like a goth.

It's on sale in the US now for $42,895 which suggests a similar price in sterling when it arrives here.

Just had the dealer phone me up. I can have one in January as I'm number 1 on the list. But at 47K I think its just too much and can't get comfortable at that money. What to do? If it was a year ago I'd probably go ahead as I could offload it and make a couple of quid if needed but now, I'm not so sure.

Is it a lot of money compared to market in general? I’m so far lost on what things cost now that I just don’t know how it compares.

That's about the same price as a well specced Merc A35, a few thousand more than a BMW 135i and about the same as a BMW 330i and as a drivers car it would show them all the way. That sort of money would also get you into the new Golf R 20 which has 333HP whilst a standard Golf R with 320HP would be about £4/£5K cheaper.

£47k is crazy. I’d get a lightly used previous one for £15k less

I'm number 6 on my dealership's list. Haven't had a call today, although they did call me about a week ago (went to voicemail) asking me to call them to spec up an order.
I didn't return the call.
On today's pricing news, I'm 90% likely to ask for my deposit back. I don't see it replacing the Yaris, and I can't see myself forking out £47k to add it to the fleet. Given that I have 3 cars that I'm very happy with, that's a very tough man-maths proposition even for me!

The pricing is a bit too rich for me and I don't really have the space for it anyway. So it's highly likely I won't be getting one. What I quite like about all 3 of my cars is that they are all within a centimetre or two of each other regarding width excluding mirrors (about 1800mm). I think the CTR is quite a bit wider, and I'd rather not have anything wider than my current trio. I don't need the space of the CTR, the M3 does that job for me. If money was no object I would have one though

I know I'm out of touch, but £47k for a "hot hatch" is eye-watering stuff. Don't go looking at Merc A Class AMGs then..... Yes, but you’d expect a 425hp 4WD hot hatch to be a step up in price from a 325hp FWD. Especially one with an old fashioned DIY gearbox It is a lot of money and a big step up on price from the old model, but doesn’t particularly surprise me. Our Golf was just over £40k list and that was 4.5 years ago, it would be easy to spend £50k on one now. Better value than what you get for £50-60k if you buy electric though.

The A45 is over £60k so in a different league again.
Not sure how much an A35 is , but id rather the Civic than that

The Civic will appeal to the driving enthusiasts rather than anyone who is more impressed by a car's badge rather than how it drives.
The trouble is, most of those driving enthusiasts will balk at paying at least £47k for the Civic, and most people (I'm clearly generalising here) with about £50k to spend on a new car wouldn't choose one with a Honda badge.
So Honda are aiming at a limited market, but it seems that they are limiting their supply. If they're only going to make a few hundred cars available to the UK market each year it's on sale, maybe they can sell them all at £47k-plus.
But almost certainly not to me at the moment.

Perhaps the Civic is not over-priced. It is something more bespoke than other FWD hot hatches, plus it is the only pure-combustion Civic left now in Europe. And producing and homologating such a thing in 2022 is seemingly more expensive than it used to be, and that will only get worse with the technology and emission-controls that new cars need to have. Cars like the A45 and other automatics would win the traffic-light race hands down, but whether that is the point of a hot hatch is debatable.
The issue I would have with the Civic is what you could get instead second-hand. A lightly used M2 Competition with cash to spare for example. Not a hot hatch, but then the Civic is not a regular hot hatch either.
I think generally its sad times for us. The combustion cars that are being released can’t be sold in great numbers in Europe because of CO2 fleet averages, fewer discounts when new, the more limited supply will mean residuals stay stubborn, and that is bad news for the second-hand buyer too. All in the name of politicians globetrotting at Cop and appeasing Greta and her disciples. Euro 7 and GPF’s won’t impress Stop Oil; it all seems a bit pointless. Let ICE cars be what they are, until the ICE ban.
