MOT today. Failed, but could have been a lot worse. Basically emissions that will hopefully be sorted with a lambda and a MAP sensor. Also, the cat had been removed which I failed to notice.
With any luck I may get it through with a clean MOT which I think will help with the sale.

Did cars of that age have catalytic converters?

Did cars of that age have catalytic converters? '93 onwards were compulsory, I believe.

What age is an N Reg? About 2005/06? That's a pity!

One which is used to dealing with older cars always helpful. The chain places tend to use the latest standards regardless of age (I think different ages of vehicles have different tollerances )

My parent’s neighbour runs a garage and has been doing the work. I had a feeling emissions would be an issue but I didn’t think to check that the cat was still there.

Were cat's mandatory at that time? I seem to think that they were optional to meet forthcoming legislation

Cats became mandatory 1st August 1992, when K reg came out. I remember this specifically because my old Legacy Turbo was registered on 1/8/1992 as a K reg. One day earlier and I could have legally removed both the cats when I was modifying it.

Had to buy a second, non eBay, cat as it was still failing, and get 2 lambdas replaced, but today it passed the MOT with one tiny advisory.
A mere 9 months or so.

It is now with me. I really enjoyed driving it back on some North Yorkshire roads today. Slow by a lot of standards but makes a decent noise, is very composed and rides rather well. Have it a quick clean up prior to finding the time to do a proper one with wet vac and polisher etc. Year compliant plates fitted too.

Did you watch the Mk2 Focus ST Wheeler dealers last night? I know the Ford Heritage guy that was on and they clearly have a Mk6 Escort RS2000 shaped hole in the collection at the Heritage centre. He’s getting spammed tomorrow.

Up on C&C for about a month - nothing. Chucked it on eBay with what I thought was a fairly low reserve of £8200. Over 300 watchers and 7000 views but only 3 bids up to £7100.
A couple of people contacted me to come and have a look and I sold it for £7800 this afternoon. Loss of about £1200 but I suppose if you call it a hobby it’s been about £100 a month. The guy owns about 65 cars that he stores indoors as investments (Subarus, Fast Fords etc). He wasn’t sure how many 2wd RS2000’s he already had.
I maybe should have waited but it looks ok in the bank account.
I’ll certainly not be buying a non MOT project again, though it was rewarding to a degree and I did enjoy it while I had it. If I had been able to do the mechanic work myself it would have been about break even.

Well done for selling it. Sounds the usual issue - when you want to buy there are noe about and "ooh they hold their value very well". When you want to sell it's the opposite - at least in terms of price of not rarity.

I suppose you can make £7800 for a 28 year old mk6 Escort sound like quite a lot.

Discovery Plus on your ipad or smart TV is about £5 a month but they seem to do lots of free trials so now the latest series of Wheeler Dealers has finished you can sign up for a trial and binge it. If you're on Vodafone I used their app and had a 6 month free trial.
