Indeed. I think it is such a shame that manufacturers do not fit Recaros any more. They all make there own version of sports seats, but to me none are as comfortable or as authentic as the originals of that era. Like the Recaros in the Mk 2 Cavalier SRi that made a pretty ordinary car feel that much better to sit it.

Getting somewhere near completion. Welding, paining and putting the badges back on is done. Now a couple of minor fixes and an MOT and I am at the making it very clean and taking photos stage. The predictable cautionary tale is that it has cost about £2k more than i naively thought. Anyway - number plates - do I try to find a way to get a 1996 style dealer plate made, just get one from a friendly Ford dealer, or just go plain blank style?

I had never heard of these - but generally viewed Mk6 Escorts as an abomination. In fact all of them from when they went FWD, the XR3's were so far behind the competition it was a joke.
Given what has happened to values however, you may be in with a shout of making a profit there - it's a terrific colour indeed and now - with the rose tinted glasses of hindsight - just that red DOHC cam cover gets my juices flowing.
You lot will know I have totally lost the plot if I ever buy a 147GTA and try and "restore" it.... I still think that's a surefire classic, I mean it was a 3.2V6 in a small hatch FFS!

I think the mk5 was the bad one. The mk6 was ok but clearly fell behind Golf 4 then Focus.
These are quite interesting as 1990’s hatches go. 33/66 torque split, lsd, bespoke independent rear suspension, aluminium crossmember, plastic fuel tank.

I just had a look and it seems I well missed the boat on that one. 156 and 147GTA are not cheap for good ones, not so long ago people were giving them away.
It's funny how values go - a good friend of mine had a Corrado VR6 storm edition that had got down to about £3k in value despite being in great nick - he just refused to sell it for that, and parked it up until it was worth about 5.
Now - a dozen years or so later - I'm guessing that woulf fetch £15-20k!
I still can't really understand what is going on, except that minters from that era are a dying breed, and cars of that time were simply so much more mechanical and enjoyable to drive in many ways. Which is the appeal of oldish Porsches...

I had a meeting with a used car dealer this morning and he is basically selling all his stock and shutting up shop for a year or two. He says the price of everything has gone crazy and he just can't get good stock. People are holding on to good cars and much of the used stuff needs lots of remedial work. He feels the current position is unsustainable so he is having time out, going to Australia to see family, playing a lot of golf and going out to US later in the year. He has put all the money for stock in the hands of his IFA and he will come back to it in a year's time. Apparently his views are shared in the trade and everyone just wonders when the bubble will burst. New car manufacturers are restricting supply and have pushed up prices but with current interest rates there are only a select few who can afford to pay the high monthly figures when only 3 years ago the same car could be had for nearly half that. Take the family who bought a Touareg 3 years ago and for the same money they can't even get in to a T-Roc now - they are just refinancing the balloon payment.

Do the rear wheels really sit so far in to the wheel arch? It looks good though and I can remember that whilst they never had a look in against a Golf GTi in the magazines they were still relatively well liked.

I'd say go for plain "blank" plates but get a non-dating registration to go on it first.

I'd say go for plain "blank" plates but get a non-dating registration to go on it first. Why? Everybody knows it is from the 90s. In fact, seeing it so well preserved, while proudly declaring its age is surely a good thing.

I’ve ordered the pre 2001 font with a border and the same dealer name that is on there now.
Purple border rather than the red it has now as I am a tart.

Sadly not an option due to small extension build.
I’m also barely able to fit in it. I think there is less room for the driver than in an equivalent era Fiesta.
The ST170 is still doing the job well, but I have an itch for a Scorpio Cosworth.

I love that era of Scorpio Granadas. I was working for a medical computer company in London as the Financial Controller and we ran a pretty extensive car fleet. So running that came under my area. My company car was a 1988 2.0i Ghia Granada 5 door, but as they wanted to be nice to me the fleet company we used "lent" us a Scorpio 2.9i V6 5 door which I used for several months. I absolutely loved it. I preferred the 5 door to the saloon looks-wise. Of course Ford then went and totally screwed it up with the bug eyed and blobby version. WTF were they thinking?

My Dad had a blue 1988 2.0i Ghia, the first car we had with air conditioning so massive step forward for summer holiday travel to Switzerland or Italy. The Scorpio trim level that followed it was another step up for long journeys as it had electric reclining rear seats. They completely ruined it with the bug eyed car, but thankfully the company car options had opened up by then and he had a 3 x Saab 9000s in a row followed by a 95 Aero etc

I remember a lad at school whose dad got a 2.0i GL as a company car. He always bragged we could have had a Ghia but my dad didn't want my grandads cigar ash on the leather.
Reminded me of the from A 2 B programme.

I still had the Granada Ghia when I met Pippa. It was so comfortable and yet unsporting that she called it "the motorised sofa". With the roads getting worse and worse, I think we need more of those really. It's a shame they don't still exist.

My dad and I were both working in Edinburgh in the mid-late 80s and he had a lovely Mk2 Granada Ghia X 2.8i in silver - lovely alloys and front driving light etc. Quite often, if he was flying off from Newcastle somewhere on a Monday morning I'd drive it up to the flat in Edinburgh and use it all week. Sadly, it was stolen and never recovered. It was replaced by one of the new Granada Scorpio 2.9i in a metallic burgundy with a taupe velour interior. It was a great car to drive and I used to love belting it up and down the A697 through Coldstream or through Jedburgh. When he moved down to London the Scorpio went with him but he kept a blue 2.0i Ghia at the house in the NE so I got to use that, meaning he could just fly up and down and still have a car either end. It didn't have the effortless power of the 2.9i V6 but, considering my car at the time was a 1.6 Orion, it still felt like a step up.

I guess we were a ‘Ford’ family (although plenty of others in the mix) as I grew up being ferried in my dads 3.0 Capri (British Racing Green!) and mum had a Fiesta ‘Sandpiper’ for a long while.
One of the first Sierras followed the Capri (to my horror), grandad had an Orion at some point also.
Dad moved to Range Rover after that - ‘Classic, P380, Gen1 Discovery, Sport (x2) and Mums driven a Discovery Sport for the past 15+ years also.
My first car was a Fiesta Popular Plus and I also had the ST220 estate for a while!

I was trying to remember my dad's company cars through childhood: Mk3 Cortina 1600L in dark green Mk3 Cortina 2000L in silver (met it's end when a cow jumped on it) Mk3 Cortina 2000E auto, metallic green, black vinyl roof. (nasty encounter with cement mixer, never quite the same) Mk1 Granada 3000S, signal yellow (aka The Bananamobile) Mk2 Granada 2.8GL, Jewish Racing Gold Mk2 Granada 2.8i Ghia X, silver, stolen and stripped Granada Scorpio 2.9i, burgundy then he went to the dark side: Jaguar XJ 2.9 - the cheapo entry level model, but he specified tweed seats! (no idea what was going on as I had left home by that time and it was too late to "have a word". Finally Lexus LS400 - arguably too perfect all round.

I guess we were a ‘Ford’ family (although plenty of others in the mix).... It's interesting. People were either Ford families or they avoided them at all costs. My parents were in the latter category. Minis, Austins, Jags. Never Fords. But one of my dad's colleagues had serial Granadas and his wife serial Escorts. I rebelled (for a while) and got a Mk II Cortina as my first car and a Ford Orion as my first company car.
