Pleasant surprise last night when TG reappeared, I didn't even know it was due back on yet.
Paddy being more Paddy then usual, Harris being less annoying than usual and Flintoff now apparently the target of my wife's affections (I think she has a fondness for daft lumpy Northerners). A few notes from the brain of Blarno:
Why do modern V8s sound so rubbish? The McLaren sounded like a fart in a biscuit tin full of wasps and the Vantage sounded like it was completely computer generated (It sounds almost identical to one of the Cuban gang cars in GTA Vice City).
The Alfa strikes me as the most pointless vehicle on the planet - turn a 4 door saloon into a track witch by removing the rear seats and fitting plastic windows. I bet it still weighs more than a small moon. And £155k!
The McLaren managed to look exciting and deadly dull at the same time, which is no mean feat and props to Harris for getting within a second of Lando Norris in it, he clearly knows how to pedal.
Eddie Kidd. Fucking legend, When you think of all the crazy leaps he did, it was a relatively small one that did him in. How on earth anybody on his team beyond his manager thought that a jump to a raised bank was a good idea is beyond me. I won't even jump my mountain bike to flat. I was more than a little glassy eyed seeing his reaction at the end. Just Knight him for services to turning teenage lads into screaming nutjobs and be done with it.

Best thing I've seen on TV for ages.
An absolute tear jerker. Watching it with the missus I held on for as long as I could and then it all came flooding out.
Loved the 765LT as it looks an absolute beast. You'd need serious amounts of tuition to get the best out of it on track and on road its kind of pointless but what a machine. I love the Alfa but would have it in GTA rather then modificata spec. In GTA it keeps the rear seats and loses the daft spoiler. The Aston was a massive improvement on the normal car buy still only gets to about 7/10 on the looks department.
As for Harris pretty impressive getting so close to Lando. Was it Sutcliffe who in Autocar years ago who did something against Jenson Button in a Civic Type-R and racing car and very much held his own.

The Alfa did seem pretty pointless, they might as well of welded up the rear doors for all the use they were. In fact, for that money you'd expect some bespoke coupe body.

I am surprised how Alfa managed to sell all 500 of them, but Jag haven’t even sold all 300 of the P8s they had planned to build.
Alfa have invested money in widened track, carbon fibre panels and a few bits and pieces, but significant elements are of the “ lick n’ stick “ go faster variety and the engine upgrades are disappointing. Jaguar went all out with properly bespoke bodywork and suspension, 4wd and a mental V8 that doesn’t go in any other XE – which they then slung around the Nurburgring to set the fastest production saloon time.
Harry uploaded a twin test with his own P8 and a GTA M and at a purely subjective level, the P8 is infinitely more appealing and special to me.
A P8 is first choice on my lottery list – no rear spoiler, no graphics, rear seats intact and I’d spend a bit of money at an interior trim shop getting some of the trim pieces wrapped in leather and Alcantara.

Loved the show. Eddie Kidd had it all - Talent beyond belief, balls the size of a planet, film star looks. What a man.

The wife was out at a concert last night so I sat down and watched the recorded Top Gear and thoroughly enjoyed it. Such a shame about Eddie Kidd and how some poor planning wrecked a life.

I'll be honest, I've never heard of Eddie Kidd. So the feature was a bit weird to me, and actually rather sad.
The car stuff I found boring, except for the bits with the F1 drivers. Vettel is quite a character.

Was it Sutcliffe who in Autocar years ago who did something against Jenson Button in a Civic Type-R and racing car and very much held his own. Sutcliffe drove the Honda F1 car at Silverstone, I still have the special DVD from 2008, running time 20 minutes (it says on the sleeve). I've not had the time to watch it again over the past few days but I remember that one of the team's staff came up when Sutcliffe was driving and enquired who was the driver they were testing (because they were impressed with his speed), not realising it was "only" a a journalist

You just need to watch Sutcliffe on any of his track based videos to know that he is a really quick driver. He has great car control and can keep talking whilst correcting a slide at maximum attack speed. I very much respect his opinions.

Shout out to his carer as well. Its interesting to see that the carer was almost an extension of Eddie himself.

Just caught up. Very enjoyable so far. The Eddie Kidd stuff was emotional.
The 2nd episode caravanning roads are somewhat familiar to me. Harthope on the B6278 is my favourite stretch of road. It is also where the wind spun the Defender in the blizzard a year or two back.

What Paddy said about leccy cars was right, too many are trying to reinvent the wheel with wacky styling and daft interiors. The EQ whatever it was still looks like a normal pretend off roader.
The prices of them did make my eyes water though.

That's one of my bugbears with electric cars. They are too expensive and simply not affordable for a lot of people. The tech is getting ridiculous too. The Audi had camera stalks instead of mirrors FFS.

The Audi had camera stalks instead of mirrors FFS. They'll be an option - I saw a Lexus ES with them the other day. Ultimately I guess they'll become standard as they reduce drag and add to efficiency. They'll end up cheaper than mirrors as well, I suppose.

I've tried those camera mirrors on the Audi e-tron, and honestly they're a bit hard to get used to.

I'd hate to think what a replacement camera might cost if some dickhead tries his karate kick on it.

I thought this because the screens were in the door. That would mess with my brain, thinking it's a mirror and wondering why it's "reflecting" an image of what's behind when it should really be reflecting an image of the interior, based on its position.

I've seen them on some trucks as well - looks very odd when you're used to a full size wardrobe mirror on the side of a cab.

Yes, I've seen them on lorries. Having a big screen in the A pillar is odd and will cause a blind spot. Fuck knows what you would do if one fails. I know mirrors break, but I can't remember it ever being a problem as replacement glass is easily available and cheap.

Partly that, but also with a regular mirror you're looking outside, and you can pick up and see what's on the periphery of the surrounding area of the mirrors (like an object coming from the front side corner). The camera doesn't capture stuff like that.

I know mirrors break, but I can't remember it ever being a problem as replacement glass is easily available and cheap. You must be joking. The auto-dimming, heated glass element of the Gorilla was £hundreds to replace after some scrote stole one. Not the mirror housing with the adjuster motor in it: just the glass. Webcam elements are a few pounds: that’s why every device has one and phones have 2. Plus I’ve never had a phone camera fail even after dropping, sitting on, submerged in a toilet and even used as a hammer. Like manual windows v electric rear view cameras will be the cheap option.

I'm clearly out of touch. Disco 2 electric heated mirror glass including the mount is £20 new at the most. 😂
I can't see car manufacturers making it cheap to replace cameras, though.

I once had the mirror break on my Megane as it was hit by a car going the other way on a narrow country road. Renault wanted over £100 for a replacement glass unit. I went to Halfords and got a piece of glass for a tenner. Wasn't heated but I just wiped it in the morning if needed. Lease company never noticed.
Regarding the E Tron mirrors I believe they're not an option on US models as they're not legal there and have only recently become legal in Europe. I can see some benefits for aerodynamics and in some trucks that have them they can probably provide multiple views and help minimise blind spots. I notice newer model Land Rovers have a camera for the rear view mirror so you're not obscured by the headrests or rear passengers. That would probably be a good idea for panel vans that have no rear window.

^^^ Yes, that's a nice touch from Land Rover and would be useful on normal vans with a bulkhead and/or no rear glass.
