I think that's brilliant - superbly played and a lovely-looking old bruiser! An X-Type estate is a solid shout - my BiL had a diesel one and it was a very dependable hack. And just sufficiently out of the ordinary to be interesting - and if you find a green one, you'll be able to say you drive the same car as the Queen, who appears to still tootle around Windsor Great Park in one, although I imagine hers is a 3.0. X-Type estates still look good today and have aged gracefully. Marvellous man maths - I'd need Carol Vorderman's help to get something like that past my missus. Like John has said used car inflation may make a good £3k daily driver and tow car a challenge though.

I agree that £3k is going to be a real challenge for something that has to do both jobs well, it might need a bit more man maths to get the right thing.
Can you get a Saab 95 estate in budget?

How do we know it's been looked after? Balmoral is a closed estate - she could have been hooning it round, doing doughnuts in the back fields?

That is massively overpriced. 2K for a pre-facelift 93 that isn't an Aero is insane. I paid £2800 for mine back in 2016 and that was a 2008 facelift with 128k on the clock. From a dealer.
That said, it won't have a DPF so it will be smoky, but it also won't fail and cause untold misery. Very comfy cars, surprisingly agile considering it's a butchered Vectra underneath and more than capable of towing a roadshed.

Ah yes, their version of the Allroad. I'm not sure how good the 4wd system is on those, they only sold about 3 of them.

I didn't know those existed either. It's weird, but jacking it up a bit and fitting some cladding just makes it look better.

Loving the V8!
Re the other car, how about a cheap lease? Skoda Octavia Estate 1.5 TSi is being advertised at £133 per month with £1,100 down on carwow. And its a towcar of the year winner in the 1400kg class, whatever that means!

Love it. I am fully behind another 75/ZT or maybe an X-Type 2.2d. I like the idea of a Kuga being an investment. Makes me think Chris M should be WBACing his and getting an M5 V10. For reasons I don't want to go into here, I have a feeling I will be keeping the Kuga until I can afford to retire. One of the main issues with it (soft paint) probably means that WBAC would chip (pun intended) any offer down a lot due to the number of paint blemishes. With heated leather seats, glass pano roof and some other nice features, it's actually a good and soothing place to be when travelling, and as I get older the desire to have a much more powerful car "for a laugh" decreases every month. I think I will have to wave goodbye to any aspirations of owning a Mustang V-8 or M5 V-10 and am instead mulling over the thought that my next car may end up being electric, perish the though

It was soft and chipped easily from new, despite having some form of Autoglym paint treatment that was supposed to make the paint harder !

The paint on my Focus was awful and bird mess caused absolute havoc with it if left for more than a day without cleaning it off (don't criticise I often had to leave it at airport car parks)

The paint on both my Lexus was quite soft, which was disappointing. The BMWs I've had have resisted chipping far better, despite doing exactly the same trip, day after day. After 2 years and 30k miles my last 3 series had only picked up a small chip on the bonnet and one on the lower plastic front bumper.

I had a few chips on my last BMW, but it had done around 50k miles and was a lot better than the previous one. I probably shouldn't mention this, but the only mark on my current car, which has done 29k miles, is one that has been inflicted by a careless tosser in a carpark. No stones chips yet..... The Golf has a couple of small chips, so is also better than expected.

After 2 years and 30k miles my last 3 series had only picked up a small chip on the bonnet and one on the lower plastic front bumper. After 40k miles, my BMW has quite a bit of chipping at the front - but that might be due to the combination of a relatively low nose and a high proportion of fast motorway miles, meaning that any stone is packing some punch when it hits the car.

How do we know it's been looked after? Balmoral is a closed estate - she could have been hooning it round, doing doughnuts in the back fields? Well, presumably they buy them in job lots at Buckingham Palace as Brenda was spotted out driving a green X-Type estate in Windsor Great Park just this morning and doing so "quite fast" to your latter point!

The 260 has landed. Collected last night and driven for 1.5hrs back home along some nice flowing roads. It's just as I remember - not outright fast but an absolute torque monster that will pull in 5th from well under 30mph. The big difference with this one is the X Power exhausts, which sound ABSOLUTELY FUCKING FANTASTIC. The car drives nicely. I think it will be better with an alignment to the correct ZT260 settings and the wheels need a bit of balancing but other than that it bowls along well.
I've come away with a box file full of invoices and a small box with some random spare bits in it, including a digital TV receiver to convert the standard TV (lol) which the last owner just never got round to. I've not tried the satnav yet but I suspect it's quite comical by today's standards.
I've not found a daily yet but got some ideas, similar to those suggested.

I've been reminded this morning, on the way to work, how heavy the clutch is and how much the car is hard work in queueing traffic!

To be fair, it would be easy enough to add a remote clutch servo should you wish to use it more.
Enjoy and have fun looking for a daily.

To be fair, it would be easy enough to add a remote clutch servo should you wish to use it more. Enjoy and have fun looking for a daily. Never heard of such a thing, must look into it. To be fair, I just need to get used to it. The last one was the same, it's just how they are. The throttle cable needs replacing or adjusting in some way. It's stiff, making applying the throttle a bit of a jerky affair. It's a known issue and easily resolved but it would make the driving experience a little smoother and easier. I wonder if anyone really noticed it in the traffic yesterday, although you really don't see that many about now, certainly not V8s. Driving down the High Street in the village I stopped to let a Mustang out of a parking bay. We rumbled off in opposite directions and it must have sounded rather good in the street for a few seconds.
