Some glorious man maths and positive spin has presented the opportunity to buy something as a "weekend" car. A number of things have fallen into place to allow this and the opportunity simply could not be ignored. Following a chat with Andy about replacing our ageing boiler but not having available funds he sent me a link to an ad on Car and Classic, suggested I sell the Kuga, buy the car in the ad and put the surplus into buying a boiler. Nice idea except that I'd also need a sensible daily that could also pull the caravan. However, given that I can turn a tidy profit on the Kuga at the mo, with WBAC offering 17k+ (I paid 13900), the suggested car being advertised at 11500 and that leaving the remainder to be split between funding for/towards a boiler and a daily driver, plus Mrs R actually agreeing to the plan (due to a good amount of positive spin), things progressed. So, having been to view the suggested car on Saturday, a deposit has been paid and soon I shall once again own a V8... ZT260, of course! 2003 53, 55k miles, Copperleaf Red, SE spec. Advertised at 11500, accepted offer of 10500. The car has a bigger BBK throttle body for (a few) more horsies and X Power oval exhausts for quite a bit more sound. It has had some important work done recently including new rear subframe and other bits. Current owner has had it for 10 years, it has a stack of paperwork, enthusiast owner (has 2 MGB V8s and had 2 ZT260s at one point). It's almost 9 years since I sold the last 260. I've missed it a lot over that time. And prices have certainly risen as my last one sold for 4.5k, then for 7.5k 3 or 4 years later. I have an appointment with WBAC on Tuesday and then I need to find a daily pretty sharpish. Budget 3k, diesel estate or SUV, capable of towing the caravan.

Excellent! Looks in really good condition. Love the man maths that goes from not having the funds to replace the boiler to not only getting a ZT260 but increasing the fleet!

Excellent! Looks in really good condition. Love the man maths that goes from not having the funds to replace the boiler to not only getting a ZT260 but increasing the fleet! Thoroughly sensible, isn't it? There's a couple of small remedial jobs to do on the car which I spotted whilst viewing it. I was able to see it at a long-standing MG and classic car specialist and had it up on a ramp to have a good wander underneath. The rear subframe has been replaced, but the front wants some preventative work on it to stop the rust and protect it. Same with the boot floor, in what would have been the spare wheel well but on these cars houses the battery and other electronics. Just surface rust but it wants tackling now. The differential has a slight leak from a halfshaft seal but it's far from unheard of. The electric mirrors don't seem to work but that appears to be the switch pack in the door and easily rectified. On driving it there's the usual "fuck me, that's heavy" clutch but you get used to it. And the gear change is not to be rushed but that is how they are. I'll be getting an alignment done but will see how it is after checking the tyre pressures. Thats not to say it was bad but it just felt like it might benefit from being set up properly. The tyres are all matching and are barely worn. And it sounds just lovely. That wonderful, woofly V8 sound, with some added bite from the X Power exhausts.

Outstanding! Top petrol head points earned there. I prefer the pre-facelift models, too. Excellent choice.

You’re basically the Rover cars version of Mark.
Looks good though. I prefer those headlamps to the facelift version.

Excellent man-maths indeed! Looks terrific too, especially for a car of that age. Hope you enjoy many fun miles in it.

It would indeed but having two (at the same time) takes me into dangerous fan boy territory. Doesn't it, Mark?

It would indeed but having two (at the same time) takes me into dangerous fan boy territory. Doesn't it, Mark? As long as you make sure one is always running and/or not in bits in the garage, you’ll be OK!

To be fair, I think having multiple Land Rovers is OK. Having multiple Rovers probably isn't!

Excellent man maths and a great result there. I too much prefer the pre-facelift MG ZT's. They just looked right, through a combination of the quad headlights and the mesh grill.
You picked the perfect time to trade in an increased value car, before the drought ends and values fall once more, and swap into an appreciating classic. Win-win.

Love it. I am fully behind another 75/ZT or maybe an X-Type 2.2d.
I like the idea of a Kuga being an investment. Makes me think Chris M should be WBACing his and getting an M5 V10.

I think that's brilliant - superbly played and a lovely-looking old bruiser!
An X-Type estate is a solid shout - my BiL had a diesel one and it was a very dependable hack. And just sufficiently out of the ordinary to be interesting - and if you find a green one, you'll be able to say you drive the same car as the Queen, who appears to still tootle around Windsor Great Park in one, although I imagine hers is a 3.0.
