Can't say I'm a fan but the Grille in the more subtle shades does sit more comfortably to my eyes then it did 6 months ago.
The other issue is how many really interesting cars you can buy for the price of this.

It looks a bit heavy above/behind the back wheels but, grille notwithstanding, is fairly inoffensive.

Take the badge off and it could be anything. The enormous slab of dark plastic on the rear 3/4 is going to look awful on the lighter colours.

The other issue is how many really interesting cars you can buy for the price of this. Well yes, but which ones would you actually buy? I mean there's an entire universe of cars out there for £60k that I like but not many that actually fit the bill as well as my current car does. Z1 aside, I've never owned a car this long. Partly because I like it a lot and partly because I haven't a clue what to replace it with (I'm still blowing hot and cold on SUVs). Mine looks good (low and sleek), goes as much like stink as I need a car to go, can do both the relaxed tourer thing and the rather rabid shouty thing, all whilst seating five when it needs to, without them whinging, having a sizeable boot and turning in excellent fuel consumption and generally low running costs. Equally I don't mind a change from time to time. I do like the RS5 Sportback, but they come in a dreary palette of colours inside and out, and are very expensive.

Rear 3/4 view looks very nice - especially in aventurine red, which improves any car . That front grille looks worse in photos than in the metal / ABS but it’s still no oil painting. This was very much my experience when selecting a new car. W2.1 really wanted an Audi but also really wanted a red car with dark brown seats. I looked at the A8 Hybrid but fell asleep pretty much instantly as the images appeared.

Nicked from the web - still think mine is the better-looking model even allowing for the grille. Just cleaner and leaner.

I think the new one looks as though someone has tried to build in a bit of the 3 and 5 GT and the lack of the hofmeister kink still annoys me. The front grills are just ugly although as expected I am slowly getting used to them but will never love the way it looks. It is better proportioned than the new coupe though.

Indeed. Although I need to see that green in the metal and dark brown leather is not on the UK configurator.

I was amused by the comment on one of the BMW forums which basically said "what's with the 1990s Rover paint colour"? It's closer to the metallic red of my Dads Granada Scorpio than his SD1. I think it's awful in so many ways. The front of course but it's not just the grille, the side grilles and cerium grey slots are nearly as bad. The rear 3/4 has the same issue as the coupe (not quite as bad), too much metalwork which makes it look really dumpy (especially when reviewed from the front 1/4) and the rear wheel look small. The back end is a mess as well, but looks OK compared to the rest..... Aventurine red works on the 5 & 7, but doesn't on this. So in summary, another awful BMW......

And yet you tolerate something quite similar slats-wise on your Range Rover...I'd always want those in body-colour myself.
I don't think it's nearly as bad as the two-door versions or the 3-series.
Then again the current Audi A5 in any guise, including Sportback, is nowhere near as pretty as the original. Difficult Second Album Syndrome perhaps.

Equally I don't mind a change from time to time. I do like the RS5 Sportback, but they come in a dreary palette of colours inside and out, and are very expensive. Are there? Maybe we have a different criteria, but it can't be miles apart other than because I've got the family truck I want something smaller that will fit in the garage as a second car, but there isn't anything I want with a £55-60k budget to replace the Golf, either new or lightly used. It doesn't help that I'm in a similar position to you are with your current car, the Golf is an excellent all rounder and I thought when I started to use it a lot more (I do 200-600+miles a week in it now and regularly do 350+ in a day) I'd want to change it, but if anything I like and appreciate it more. All it's missing is a nice 6 or 8 cylinder soundtrack, but that's not easy to get in post WLTP world with the move towards more and more fakery and it doesn't sound bad plus the Dynaudio speakers are fairly decent. It does the comfortable motorway cruiser thing very well for a small car (it's better than the new 330i I had for a few days just over a year ago), which is helped by DCC and voodoo cruise, has a decent range and is great fun even if the only opportunity on a journey is a roundabout on a dual carriageway. It's even big enough for my 6'3 eldest to fit in the back behind his near 6' 15 year old brother, something that wouldn't be possible in a number of cars, like the 4GC for example... It's hardly a bad position to be in and I've done well getting to 3 years without having a big desire to change and despite it being worth very strong money at the moment which makes any man maths super easy, I've pretty much decided to keep it for another year.

I don't see how they quite similar at all other than being in a contrasting colour and I don't tolerate them, I like them. When they are in body colour they are satin finished, which I'm not massively keen on, although that is better than the black pack and black wheels most are ordered with. It's not quite as bad as the 2 door, but that's hardly a decent benchmark for a cars asthetics!

You can get bright red for free or a darker shade for £3k (don’t BMW want £2k for AustinRover Red?) and have brown seats on an RS6 plus it’s a (mild) hybrid so you can still feel all eco friendly. Am I too late?

Aventurine was £1,095 inc VAT.
I think it was more the fact that the other A6 models were made to feel like they were in the lower order due to the paucity of configuration options. There’s restrained and there’s downright dull - the Audis felt like the latter. All that interior quality perception is lost in a sea of ennui.

I think it must've come out after the SD1 ceased production I don't think I've seen a current 3 or 4 series yet with wheels that are nice. The ones I see fitted on most 3s are particularly nasty

Nicked from the web - still think mine is the better-looking model even allowing for the grille. Just cleaner and leaner. I much prefer yours. The idea of a coupe is about looks and I can get on board with that for the older model, it’s lower leaner and looks generally more athletic. The new one is a hatchback and nothing more. It’s fussier, bulkier and takes styling principles, for example the rear plastic cladding, from SUVs. I think the estate is the most successful of the new 3/4 series. Particularly in Alpina B3 flavour.

I struggle with the side profile of the Touring - the doorhandles (obsession alert) really bug me.

This is because my theory holds true: All estate variants of any medium/large saloon model are better looking than the saloon.
