From memory there were a number of motors, usually rally homologation types, that had no folding rear seats for rigidity. No rhyme or reason for them on a road car but homolgation rules were/are fairly strict. My Legacy Turbo had a solid rear bulkhead and fixed rear seats. So did both my Lexus.

I'm a big fan of the outgoing 4 series, and (somewhat less) the GC version, handsome cars. A black one (430d non-GC) lives a few houses down with an owner even more precious than me (its black, yet always clean, and with a sheet over it currently due to the mayflies!). It's a really nice looking car to my eyes, I would not hate a 440i version of the same.
This one I'd need to see - the front is not as scary as it might be in those carefully taken shots, but from the side/rear it looks taller, more like the 3 series GT versions of old, which were not generally well liked (though probably SH bargains now).
60 grand though !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not having followed recent car prices that's about £15k more than I expected. I'm getting totally grumpy old man about new car prices, I just hope that a) people still buy good ones and b) good old UK depreciation (much higher here than elsewhere) continues to be massive.

I was going to say that £60k is the list and you'd get 12%+ off that, but it would be all too easy to add that back on (and more) with options, so it is a £60k car.

Yeah: the list price of the 530e as specified starts with a 7 but ends up starting with a 5 kind of in line with a base car.
I note published price as specced of it in Germany is the equivalent of £8k more than in the UK, but then the exchange rate is better than it has been but still horrible for that kind of maths.

The E90 M3 has rear seats that do not split or fold as standard, but split and folding rear seats could be specified as an option. I did not specify them

The plural of Lexus is Lexus. The plural of Mercedes is Mercedes. Always wondered why people struggle with this?

I did not specify them I find it a very handy function that I use more frequently than you might imagine. I've only owned three cars (out of 20-odd) that didn't have the ability to fold the rear seats - the Alfa, the Merc and the M5. Even the Z1s had a fully removable panel between the boot and the cabin. It mattered less with the Merc and the M5 as they had cavernous boots but having to stack stuff on the rear seats of the Alfa used to annoy me, plus simply the inability to get the occasional larger object into the car - the fact my car is a full liftback/hatchback is very handy in this respect.

The new 4 CG looks shittier, no two ways about it. I think the price increase is not only about inflation and manufacturing shortages, but now its an M Performance model. I liked the subtlety of the F3X 40i's, apart from the tailpipes which were not huge, there wasn't any other way to visually distinguish compared to lesser models. Especially now that 20d models get two split pipes, the 40i's look even more discreet.
GPF has screwed the noise. You can get the Schnitzer system, GPF-compliant that thankfully brings back round tips, but it still doesn't sound anywhere near as good as non-GPF M340's in the US with the M Performance exhaust system. When you hear the M Performance system that you can't get in Europe, one feels robbed. Don't get me wrong, I would always rather have a six compared to a four, but knowing it could sound a lot better would grate.
I would be inclined to get a used Alfa Giulia QV, whatever the compromises.

My interest has been piqued more keenly.
Apparently Alpina has been spotted road-testing a B4 version of the new 4GC. There was no B4/B4S version of the first generation 4GC that I have.
It seems that Alpina may not do a 2dr B4 and concentrate instead on the 5dr B4 given the indications are that BMW has once again decided not to do an M4GC.
An Alpina B4 version of the 4GC could be a car that, ghastly grille and no doubt exorbitant price notwithstanding, I could be very interested in.

Makes sense as that’s what they’ve done with the 8 series, although there is an M8 GC. It will be an easy £80k plus car when you add nice leather and a couple of options which is a huge amount for a 4 series before you get to the looks, which isn’t just the grille, but that does draw the eye away from the other issues which I guess is something!

Trouble is that I have had quite considerable difficulty in deciding what comes after my current car.
I just find the medium size, sleek fastback shape, hatch practicality and performance on offer quite Goldilocks for our requirements and, apart from the Audi RS5 Sportback or the Porsche Panamera, there's not much else out there that offers the same blend. Hell it's even quite economical - certainly more so than the aforementioned Audi or Porker.
I mean I do like the Macan a lot but equally when I see one parked next to my car, it just looks like a gallumphing heffalump by comparison, even if it is one of the sleekest SUVs out there.
The 8GC is a huge car - I don't want something that long and that wide, and it's a not a patch looks-wise on the old 6GC. The Audi A7 variants are similarly huge.

I'm not sure how you can say that about the size of the Macan yet still have the Panamera on your list - I'm still surprised at how huge they are whenever I see one, especially if it's parked beside something like a 3 or 4 series.

I looked at a Panamera and an 8GC and the former is huge and the latter terribly packaged for a family.
I agree with Racing: a B4 GC would be a great car and hopefully the front end may have some aerodynamically inspired alterations.

I don't have a Panamera on my list. I just acknowledged it as the other fast fastback available.

Mrs RT doesn't like estates and I don't greatly care for this generation of 3-series. It might not have the beaver teeth but the rest of the shape is just awkward. Whoever designed and positioned those doorhandles needs shooting.
