Car ordered. I don't need to change my number plate. Has to have 18": there's some gubbins in the rear arches on the 530e touring that precludes the 845M 19" wheels I wanted. I don't really believe that as the individualiser allows a set of 20" wheels (only one design for the 530e and no 19"s... ) but even the BMW Germany web config site (far more flexible and additional items than BMW UK) doesn't allow anything other than the 18"s so maybe there's something in that. The saloon can have any size you like but I want to avoid looking like an Uber. At present it looks like the summer trip, already decided to be by car, will be the last hurrah for the Gorilla unless a slot becomes available as the delivery for the new one is vaguely "August", with build likely end of July.

Back to plan A!
Other than the colour (which I do like) and Nappa leather (essential imo), what options have you gone for?

Back to plan A! Other than the colour (which I do like) and Nappa leather (essential imo), what options have you gone for? Tech (not plus) - so still get HUD and comfort access plus HK surround. M Sport pro (only way to get adaptive) Pan roof Visibility pack (voodoo lights) Comfort plus (for the vented seats) Parking Assist plus (surround and drive recorder). This means the only tech plus bits it's not got is the accident avoidance stuff the Gorilla has that I never use. Fineline ridge wood inserts. This was the most difficult choice as the Ash looks really nice too but I found a real video of the Mokka with Ridge wood and it looked really nice so went with it after showing W2.1

Very nice. As far as I can make out 5 series production is unaffected by the semiconductor shortages.

Superb colour scheme. Very nice. This type of hybrid makes a great deal of sense. Are you buying it in Germany?

Are you buying it in Germany? Not this time but you’ve now made me want to go and spec it on BMW.de to see what stratospheric price I get to - in the UK the big Nav, power tailgate and lots of other stuff is standard. In Germany you get a body shell, an engine, seats and some wheels. Mind you if I did spec it in Germany I’d have standard seats covered in cloth. Sense: yes indeed. After having that PHEV Volvo last summer in France I’ve really started to think about the kind of driving I do. Lots of trips to Sainsbury’s (we walk to Waitrose to feel extra pious), to the country club, into London, the odd foray into deepest Surrey and a couple of long trips a year. So aside from using the Mini a lot, if we go out for even a short trip into London we take the Gorilla which would be better using electric only as opposed to 8-12 mpg.

The interior is great, not sure about the black highlights but whatever suits you, Sir. Either way it will be a cracking drive from what I have seen so I hope it serves you well. Enjoy.

Not my choice: the pro pack which is the only way to have adaptive suspension comes with the high gloss black pack, which I had on the B10 Alpina so change is as good as a rest.

At the crux of it is the status of the car, those without certain attributes will be a bigger loss when you part with the car and no doubt they look better on the road as these thing mostly do.

I can see me heading in this direction next. I really enjoy the super smooth etron and 95% of the time it's a great car and meets my needs. That's because 95% of my driving is short distance. The other 5% is more stressful and has to be planned too much. The bmw x5 45e has caught my eye, but I really really like what you have ordered.

As you've got the Zafira, do you need the extra space of an estate/SUV? You can get the 5 series saloon with the 45e engine, so a nice 6 cylinder petrol engine for when you're not on electric power. It has a 30+ mile electric range, close to 400hp, 0-60 in 4.5sec and you're not restricted to comfort wheels. www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/new/202103089895376?model=5%20SERIES&radius=1500&onesearchad=New&onesearchad=Nearly%20New&onesearchad=Used&make=BMW&advertising-location=at_cars&sort=relevance&include-delivery-option=on&postcode=nn108pl&aggregatedTrim=545e&page=1

We considered the X5 45e but just don’t like the idea of having a huge truck parked outside a suburban house. I only wish they offered the sky lounge roof in the 5 touring.

Is the sky lounge roof different to a standard Panoramic roof, seems very pricey

For a company car, having an electric range of more than 40 miles makes a big difference (nearly half) to the benefit in kind. The X5 45e has that range which is why it is currently a favourite with company car drivers who don't want to go all electric.
The last time I looked for a client there wasn't another hybrid on the market that did more than 40 miles on electric only apart from the range extender i3. This position will no doubt improve but I am sure that increased benefit in kind percentages will just be lumped on by Government and in about 4 or 5 years time these will also become too expensive to have as a company car.

Really nice car BB. Riding on 18's it will feel beautifully smooth and that's a great spec too.

Very nice spec, not to be confused with the black or grey company user. Not sure I'd kick the Gorilla out of bed for it but you'd struggle to put together a nicer example. I'm sure it will ride lovely but will the 18's be lost on the car?

I think 18”s will be too small visually but as John says it will ride like a limo (another reason W2.0 wants to change). As to the 530e tourings in the AUC or new in stock: is there some kind of lack of imagination in general circulation that means no colour is seen?

Its a BiK thing. Plus I've got to quite enjoy the raised seating position of the etron. I'm getting old!

The 5 series rides fairly well on 19s with standard M Sport suspension, so on 18s with adaptive suspension, it will be very comfortable. The 530e saloons my team all have (2 are about to move onto a Model 3) are on 19s, but my main customer has one on 18s and they do look tiny.

Immaculate taste sir (so happens I was playing with some configurators last few days due to boredom and the colour combo I kept picking was red burgundy with a nice brown interior)

Great colour combo. You're on trend with the 18's. Smaller wheels are the new cool. Better ride, better comfort.
Maybe the "no 19's" is to do with having to test all the WLTP options?

They always have been with pensioners! Although my 75 year old Dad has 19s and M Sport suspension on his 6GT, but to be fair it does ride very well, better than his previous 5 series estate. It depends on what you want and the tyres make a lot of difference as well even before you get to RFT vs standard. I didn't like how the RR drove on 21s as much as 22s, the ride was slightly better (still excellent on 22s) on the smaller wheels but it's soft enough without adding even more sidewall in. The tyres on mine are the same width and profile (40) as the rears on the 530e estate, so the sidewall depth is the same but the wheels don't look small. The Golf doesn't really ride any better on 18s than 19s, although not a fair comparison as the tyres aren't the same. I bet Jeff would have gone up a size if it was possible, but there's always a compromise to me made and the rest of the spec is excellent. It won't be a WLTP issue as it's only an issue on the estate.
