That looks incredibly tidy for the money.

So do you have to drive that for a year whilst waiting for the Boxster?

Certainly won't look like a £400 car to most.
Even if you will risk being waved down by drunk people if you drive around late at night...

So do you have to drive that for a year whilst waiting for the Boxster? I’ve got the Etron too, but yep. I did think about finding a nice little mx5 to get me through the summer!

I was in my bosses white e class and three drunk people jumped thinking I was a taxi. That's happened to me at least 3 times in the mighty Skoda since I got it, twice in the past year! It hasn't helped that Private Hire cabs in North Lan don't appear to need the (pretty massive tbh) door-stickers they used to have, in the way Glasgow PH's still do, so no kerb-side warning it isn't a taxi!

The deal has been done. I'm now the 'proud owner of a Vauxhall Zafira 1.8! Its a 2007 car, 90k miles. It was a private sale. Current owner had it for ten years. She's a company director, the kids are all going to university and she's leased a Mercedes drop top. Nice couple, nice fancy house. They let me take it for a long test drive (about an hour). Nothing went pop or bang, no water or oil where it shouldn't be. Bodywork decent, interior actually very good. Two issues; driver side electric window not working and two months MOT. Last years MOT had two minor advisories. They were asking £600, but the car was just taking up space on their drive and they clearly weren't enjoying the experience of selling. Offered then £350, agreed a deal at £395. It's off to my local friendly mechanic. He'll put it through an MOT and give it a look over. I suspect there'll be a few quid to spend to get it through the MOT. If I've bought badly then it's a £395 mistake - I can live with that. Driving impressions? Imagine putting wheels on a shed and you're about there. To be fair, it's competent but almost purposefully dull. As a car to fulfill my brief it's great. No pictures yet , but imagine a big silver box on wheels and you're there. I'm actually quite looking forward to using a car I don't care about - parking it and not stressing about it getting dinged by an incompetent driver or scratched by a jealous passer by. That is a bargain! Absolutely no image, but solid, pretty dependable and very roomy. I had one in Switzerland in 2008, a 2.2 petrol. It was just about OK 5 up with 5 big suitcases in the boot up the steep hills but it did the job well.

Have to say that it's living up to its brief. Its already filthy with sand from a beach walk with the dogs on Saturday and I picked up one of those tailgate mounted bike racks off ebay (the sort I'd never put on a nice car for fear of damage). It took four of us plus bikes to Rivington. We came back muddy, I didn't care. It's refreshing not having to think about a car

It always amuses me when you see blokes driving a people carrier, particularly if they’re on their own. They have an expression that can only be interpreted as; “I wish I’d had that vasectomy..”

They have an expression that can only be interpreted as; “I wish I’d had that vasectomy..” So i'll have a zafira that says "I wish I’d had that vasectomy..” to a gts that says "I'm having a midlife crisis!" to an etron that says "I'm virtue signalling about my environmental credentials". Meanwhile, I'll be driving along not giving a flying f what anyone thinks about me. BTW, my next door neighbour is convinced I've gone bust because as far as he can see a 911 has been replaced by a Zafira. He's one of those people that wishes the worst for everyone, so I'm enjoying letting him have his fun and not making him any the wiser.

When your GTS arrives, you should say to him how well your hard work is (now) paying off - with a BIG smile on your face and as unassumingly as possible. No boasting or crowing, no 'I'm considerably richer than you' vibe either - but just a happy, clear statement of fact and that you've treated yourself to something nice that you wanted. That should piss him right off

I really don't understand jealousy. I'm happy for people being able to enjoy what they've worked for.

I really don't understand jealousy. I'm happy for people being able to enjoy what they've worked for. It’s not in my dna either. I love seeing people make a success of something. I find it inspirational. When I was at school a guy about fours year older built a hire business and bought a 911 for his 21st birthday. Many people seemed full of hate and spite. All I could think was ‘it actually is possible for a kid from this town to drive a 911’. The guy never knew it, but he was a massive inspiration for me.
