Not as exciting this time! I'm down to one car now (Porsche gone. S max lease ended). Just me and the Etron. The S max was truly abused. The etron is way too nice for that sort of abuse so I think the s max would be better replaced with a shed of a car. Something that I can take the dogs to the beach in, throw in my bike and kitesurfing gear without caring.
I'm thinking a cheap full size estate. I truly don't care about the image, so whatever I can get that's cheap and (hopefully reliable). I'm thinking a ford or vauxhall estate. Any ideas where to start and what sort of budget gets a reliable shed.

A Mondeo estate will be decent to drive and has a huge carrying capacity. A Skoda Superb is smooth riding and quiet, but relatively dull and wooden to drive.
Why not just get another S-Max?

Friend of ours had the same remit and ended up with a 59-plate Saab 9-5 estate (the one with the Dame Edna-esque front end). Cost him next to nothing.

Another S-Max?
Passats are cheap but rugged

Depends on what your dogs are but a Passat is one of the few with an upright tailgate that affords them sufficient room in the boot. The other is a Volvo but I wouldn’t.

This makes sense. I was thinking that by avoiding cars that young people are forced to buy because of insurance then you might get a better deal

Quite. Said friend of mine currently has a fully-loaded 2005 Volvo XC90 2.9 T6 as his family snotter (they also have a couple of cherished classic cars).
Bought it for a song about six years ago, after his previous 850 T5 eventually died, as "don't care what happens to the seats" transport for carting their three small kids to mucky things like riding lessons etc. But he says it's just gone on and on and been so reliable, that they've even been across the Channel in it. I suspect he could afford a brand new XC90 T8 if he wanted to, but clearly doesn't see the point.
He acknowledges that the fuel consumption is objectively terrible, but he's wealthy enough not to care and besides it's far better than their Rolls Royce achieves.

Way to nice a car to have it knocked about by 3 young kids, filled with half a beach and 6 tonnes of mud and bikes on a regular basis. What about a nice T5 type kombi van? Loads of space, easy to sweep out, will take a battering and easy to sell on.

The V6 Passat is a good option and you’d get Ferrari seats without having to be brave!

This one. Look no further. I love it. But it would a crime to treat that as the dog/bike/beach car

I saw that earlier as I was thinking about getting something explicitly dog friendly. Probably would be a crime to trash it.

Nah, it could quite possibly be rotten underneath the shine. Although that's less likely than if it were the follow-on model.

If the S-Max was "truly abused" (your words) why didn't you just buy it and keep it? It was a "known entity" to your family and it would have saved you the hassle of looking for something else now

What do you want to spend, ideally (realistically)?

What do you want to spend, ideally (realistically)? As little as possible to meet the brief. I'd thought that circa £2k would get me there. I could spend more, I'd happily spend less.

If you’re spending £2k you need to go the private sale route, from a dealer you need to budget around £3k.

I've actually lined up a car to go and see tonight. It's such a bad car that I suspect I'll be automatically banned from this site! Giving no clues until I've seen it and perhaps bought it. Suffice to say it meets my brief perfectly - a shed on wheels with no image that I truly don't have to care about.
