Looks fairly tidy, what would insurance and servicing be like?

The answer to the question is the cheapest Skoda Superb Estate you can find for the money which is around 2.5-3K

I've actually lined up a car to go and see tonight. It's such a bad car that I suspect I'll be automatically banned from this site! Giving no clues until I've seen it and perhaps bought it. Suffice to say it meets my brief perfectly - a shed on wheels with no image that I truly don't have to care about. Multi space?

They do fall into the so shit they're good category. I drove one around Western Australia a few years ago and used more fuel in two weeks than some cargo ships do in a year.

It will be more agricultural to drive than a Massey Ferguson, so it depends if it is going to used for motorway runs.

Errrr indeed.... you can get a proper car for the budget. I await the outcome of tonight’s viewing with interest!

Good Lord, 160k on an Alfa?? I think we may have found the only recorded case in history of someone winding a car's mileage forward.

Nice, but not actually all that big in the boot department. I would be getting a W124 Benz if it were me.

He'd have to change his forum handle to "Lovejoy"!

The deal has been done. I'm now the 'proud owner of a Vauxhall Zafira 1.8! Its a 2007 car, 90k miles. It was a private sale. Current owner had it for ten years. She's a company director, the kids are all going to university and she's leased a Mercedes drop top. Nice couple, nice fancy house. They let me take it for a long test drive (about an hour). Nothing went pop or bang, no water or oil where it shouldn't be. Bodywork decent, interior actually very good. Two issues; driver side electric window not working and two months MOT. Last years MOT had two minor advisories. They were asking £600, but the car was just taking up space on their drive and they clearly weren't enjoying the experience of selling. Offered then £350, agreed a deal at £395. It's off to my local friendly mechanic. He'll put it through an MOT and give it a look over. I suspect there'll be a few quid to spend to get it through the MOT. If I've bought badly then it's a £395 mistake - I can live with that.
Driving impressions? Imagine putting wheels on a shed and you're about there. To be fair, it's competent but almost purposefully dull. As a car to fulfill my brief it's great.
No pictures yet , but imagine a big silver box on wheels and you're there.
I'm actually quite looking forward to using a car I don't care about - parking it and not stressing about it getting dinged by an incompetent driver or scratched by a jealous passer by.

Have you somewhere you can hide it so you don’t have to look at it?
Seriously....that’s a small risk to take, pretty much a disposable car and it must be nice not worrying about where you park it / cleaning it etc.

So the mechanic has taken a look at the mighty Zafira. It passed it's MOT with a couple of minor advisories. I'm pleasantly surprised by that. I'd reckoned on a couple of hundred quid of stuff to do. He gave it a good look over and can't find anything of concern. Looks like I got a good deal.

Is that the type of Zafira with the handbrake like a handle?

I hired one of those in Scotland, probably paid more for the weekend than you did for the car. I'm sure it'll be very practical

That is pretty much "free" motoring at that price. Driving impressions? Imagine putting wheels on a shed and you're about there... As a snotter to potter about in it is probably ideal. But I had the misfortune to drive a Zafira VXR once. It is the only car where I have felt car sick as the driver.

Not a bad biffer car. Is that the one with the fold-in third row of seats? Developed by Johnson Controls - I remember a colleague telling me in the ‘90s.
