After a bit of deliberation the winner is:
Boxster gts 4.0.
The 992 was too samey, the Ferrari filled me with too much fear.
Delivery dates are quite long. It looks like early next year, so I've said I'd like to wait until March '22 and get winter out of the way.
Nothing chosen in terms of spec yet. Biggest dilemma is PDK vs manual.
I've just checked through my 911 spend and over four years (and 15k miles) it was:
Car bought: £52,500 Car Sold : £40,000 Service: £650 (The first service was included in the deal, I think it's due a service in about three months) Tyres: £1000 MOTs: £100
Apart from fuel and insurance that's it. Roughly £300 per month I think. Quite amazing.
My Boxster plan is to keep it until near retirement (about 6 years time) when I plan to move to Spain.

Very good choice. PDK The 911 really was amazingly cheap to own.

PDK. When I did the GT driving day the guy told me the track cars are bashed all week long with launch control, idiot customer changes and general ‘box abuse. They rarely let go. You can also go into manual mode if you like and use auto in traffic etc. Can’t do that in a manual.

Manual. It's a weekend toy.

I was mainly thinking PDK because of the slightly lower gearing, so you can properly wring it out in 2nd then change to 3rd without getting yourself into too much trouble.

Sums up the debate I’m having! My initial thought was to go manual using the same logic as Racing. I think I’ll get hold of a pdk equipped boxster before I make a decision.

That’s the only way to get to the right answer (for you). I do agree with getting the manual for a weekend car and didn’t consider PDK when we bought a Boxster, but that had lower gearing.

Nicely done, let us know when it pops up though, not to mention the juicy details of song etc.

I really like the Black-Bordeaux Red extended leather interior. What exterior colours works with that? I have an idea but I wonder if it’s extreme/odd.

Congratulations! Silver with a red interior looks great.

Great choice. Only you can tell whether you want manual or auto. I think most buyers will go PDK so it could be very sought after if you look to sell it later on and you've specced a manual. But the flipside could be that most buyers of second hand ones will also want a PDK! Either will be epic whatever you choose.

Congratulations! Silver with a red interior looks great. Yes, GT Silver goes best with the red interior but it’s not available for the GTS for some reason. Dolomite is though and Agate grey works too (imho).

I actually think it would work quite well with the Gentian Blue Dan ordered, but maybe that's just me. With a blue hood. Not that I've been spending time on the configurator or anything....

The blue roof is a step too far for me. Aside from that, I really like this combination. The other colour I like is adventurine green.

I think Aventurine Green (before piss green?) would look superb with the red leather.

It’s on the configurator. So it is. I really like Aventurine Green on the 992, it’s not a very ‘GTS’ colour which might not help residuals but if you’re keeping it for 6 years that doesn’t really matter.

I know what you mean about not very GTS

Is the gearing so different that you could wring out 2nd in the PDK but not the manual? Or is the difference more like 3 penalty points and a lower fine vs 6 penalty points and a bigger fine? I'd go manual. I think. Try both if you can!

I think 2nd is 75mph vs 82mph in the manual (3rd is 104 vs 114), you’d be going faster than that after changing into 3rd and it’s into the 6 point / bigger fine bracket in a 60mph limit.

Definitely could be a trigger point then. Imagine trying to use the choice of gearbox as a defence in front of the Magistrates!

Well done on your decision Aventurine Green, GT Silver and Gentian Blue would all look timelessly nice on a Boxster GTS 4.0. The Boxster can also carry off the bolder colours better than the Cayman IMO. It would work well in Racing Yellow and Guards Red too. The Manual vs PDK decision will be utterly one-sided for some (me, for example - I wouldn't even countenance the idea of a PDK) but if you are genuinely on the fence, I can offer the following thoughts on the manual from my experience: It's a REALLY nice gearchange to use; you will enjoy the act of changing gear The auto blip is very good, if you are happy for it to do its thing The clutch weighting is fine; it requires more heft that a more everyday sort of car but it's lighter than on previous generations of the Cayman/Boxster and nowhere near as heavy as on older GT Porsches If you intend on driving it PROPERLY fast (using full revs) on quiet deserted roads, you will find yourself in third gear for much of the time. Third gear runs to about 115 mph. Your MPG will also be in the mid teens. You can make very fast progress in any gear - the car has so much performance for the road and you will be wondering why everyone else is going so slowly The PDK ratios are a little lower but it won't transform the experience completely, the gearing is still quite long. Enjoy the configuration process and the wait!

I'm not totally sold on Aventurine Green. I'd need to see it in the metal. Basically looks like a murky grey to me, and I think the world contains too many grey cars.

I'm of a similar opinion I'm afraid but then I've always liked my cars to be a colour not a hue. But enough people choose silver to suggest my opinion isn't necessarily the right one! And that said GT silver with red seats works and might, dare I say it, suit a red roof too.
I like the Gentian blue that Dan has too. I dont think it would work on a GT4 but suits the more subtle nature of the GTS quite nicely. Dont think I could have it with red seats though. You're certainly very fortunate to be enjoying the choice though.
