So, inspired by that very naughty-sounding S4 convertible and much discussion of F-Types, if tomorrow you were told that, with whatever your actual personal budget is (ie value of your current car plus whatever else you could afford to add), you had to go and buy your last fun conventionally-powered car before going full electric, what would be on your list and why?
Think of it as automotive equivalent of a stag party...one last hurrah...

I'll have to get back to you on this as I've just had a flashback to my own stag night and I'm feeling slightly traumatised. I think PTSD is the term they use now.

Boxster GTS 4.0 I think. I am sure I could carry my golf clubs in it if I had to and it's practical enough that I could live with it every day. If I cashed all sorts in I could maybe stretch to a nice 911, maybe a Targa but that would not be on the cards if I still had to pay for everything I currently do and also provide for my retirement.

I had a great stag do in Edinburgh - we went to the 6 Nations where Scotland beat England 19 - 13, went for loads of food and drink and then went to the kind of clubs I can't tell the wife about. Even my father in law who was there, told me not to tell a soul!

I was thinking of Pete's comment about "hairy-arsed sportscars" and thinking that it would be a pity not to have owned one prior to those becoming persona non grata.
Shades of "you live only once".
So...on my list...starting with the most affordable...
Z4M Boxster S Vantage R8 V8/V10 4C GranTurismo 4.7S Giulia Quadrifoglio LC500 911 F-Type V8 AMG GT

On the basis that it has to be based on my current budget, which is zero really, I'd just keep the XFR and lavish it with care and attention. If I wanted to spend something extra, I'd be tempted by an XKR, XJR or an XFR-S estate. But the latter are becoming like unicorns to find for sale.

No, b y no means does it have to be a new car. Nothing on my list is new! It's just that I live in the ULEZ zone so anything made between 1981 and c.2005 is a no-no.

With some of these I'm assuming that I would be able to ignore anything other than normal running costs as I imagine a few might need expensive maintenance. Aston V8 Vantage Nissan 370Z Nismo E63 AMG - one with the 6.2 V8 Maserati Granturismo Nissan GT-R A full restoration of my M5 including a naughty exhaust. A Jag F-Type with 8 cylinders Ford Mustang Bullitt (cheapest on Autotrader is £45k) Hmm when did Lamborghini Jalpas get to £90k? I thought one might be in budget

TVR Tuscan or T350. I loved my TVR and while I don't miss it anywhere near as much I thought I would, I would love one of the above.

I could probably stretch to Defender V8 at push. It'd tick the V8 box, looks like a whole lot of fun and I could just about get the dogs in. As much as the idea of a Porsche or other exotic appeals, the reality is the roads aren't going to become any less policed /fun to drive on. A lot of sports cars are like jewellery too expensive to wear. I've just driven home on some back-roads in my car and it was a riot, good sight-lines of hedgerows, braking with the flappy paddles to rein in many thousands of kilos of Land Rover and tyres with sidewalls that can take a pounding in the potholed mess we're expected to drive on. A Defender V8 might just have the extra shove out the corners and noise to make it properly entertaining.

I think, realistically, without having to sell (another) kidney, I'd look at:
Jag F Type with the V8, six cylinder possibly. The best V8 Mustang I could find as I've always loved them. I've also love the Lancia Fulvia, the advantage being that once the petrol for it is unavailable I'd just park it on the drive as a work of art.

I might have to rob a bank but I'd find a way to get into a Porsche 991.2 GT3 Manual
or Aston Vantage V12 Manual Jag F-type V8 Lotus Exige Having never owned a Ferrari a 360 Manual is probably the only one I could potentially afford.

That’s a tough one.... as it’s the last fun car then I’ll assume family moving duty will be covered by a Golf replacement.
I’d probably order a nicely specced 911 and hope factory collection was available. A lightly used R8 V10 would make the shortlist (just for the engine) and with a bit of budget stretch I would add a 991.2 GT3. I’d like to add a fairly new McLaren as well, but adding warranty and servicing costs would make it an uncomfortable stretch.

That's however, why I went for a selection of cars that are within budget and, if you'll excuse the Top Gear-ism, make me "clutch my tinkle and go ooh" whilst not moving, let alone when fired up. And which are either sufficiently alive to drive, or make sufficiently dirty noises to be fun even at lower speeds.

It may come as a shock but I love the look of my current car and I enjoy driving it. I love 4x4s, it's part of the reason I'm so depressed about electric cars that they don't seem to be making them with real utility. Perhaps Riveran(sp?) and Hummer will change that. What I'd love to buy is an F40 or Countach. I've been like someone out of Close Encounters recently doodling them without thinking. I can't afford one though, and short of pulling off the biggest con in history with an ongoing project it isn't going to happen soon either.

I think I would be limited to something like the Fiesta ST or that ilk. Not that expensive but a fun motor or two in that mix. Not a Caterham though, too compromised for me.

I'll keep my Fiesta Ecoboost as my fun car, thanks. It's what it was bought for. Zero annual VED (I've recently gone through the pleasurable experience of renewing it) and on my "budget" there would be little point in spending extra money or taking out a load as whatever I could get (even an MX5) would not, IMHO, be worth it.
If it were a money-no-object kind of question then I'd come up with a different answer

I think you're right. Approaching the question from a slightly less practical point of view I'd want an Alpina B3 Touring. The whole Alpina thing has got under my skin in that they are more than the sum of their parts. I'd want the petrol though, obviously. Like everyone else it seems the F-Type is a car I've looked at a lot. I can't decide if the occasion of the roadster would beat the appeal of the coupe. They can both look spectacular in the right spec. The M2 Competition is another I covet and unhealthy amount. Of those latter two if I can make a few inroads into a line of work I'm pursuing then I might have the confidence to do it.

I mean I do get the joy of thrashing a willing small car around - my wife's 500 is good for this, as are MINIs and MX5s etc. But if I thought it was my last fling with internal combustion, I do just think I'd have to have something just a bit more ripsnorting. After all, I'm not sure Bryan's S4 can have cost more than your Fester is worth? And yes ok the VED wouldn't be zero and the insurance and fuel would be more....but......brrrrrrrrrrruuuuuuuummmmmmmmm!

I thought this was supposed to be a realistic buy? ST is a fairly decent drivers car, fuel and insurance should be doable but I understand folk with more disposable income would want something more exotic. I take it I could still read about those here so I would not entirely miss out.

I'm pretty darn happy with what I have, and what's incoming later this year.
But I would like to consider some of the following:
991.2 GT3 manual or better still, 992 GT3 manual when the Touring model gets launched (I've asked to be considered for one...) Lotus Exige 390, 410 or 420 Current Aston Vantage V8 manual Mustang Mach 1
The Cayman and the M3 would probably have to go, but I'd keep the incoming Yaris unless/until something else fast, 4WD with a manual gearbox gets launched that I prefer.
