So it is time for a new car for the other half. After 5 years of the Cayenne she wants something 'sexier' i.e a sports car.
Narrowed down the field ,ideally I would go with a cayman gts but it is wasted on her ,a regular cayman will do ,but there are alternatives.
a 718 Cayman ,great looking ,great to drive, but can be under equipped next to other cars and is 2 wheel drive (where I am 4wd is an advantage ,the roads get covered in some serious (literally) shit.
this leads me onto the Jaguar f type...great to look at ,good to drive I believe ,the only downside is they are quite wide and the interior is a bit underwhelming .Can be bought with 4wd and sounds fantastic (I would be looking at the v6)
Dark Horse Audi RS5 ,4wd very comfortable, the best interior by a distance but not as fun to drive as the other 2.
The jag and audi I have never driven so any advice on either form anyone who has driven them would be helpful.

Pete (chipbutty) is your man regarding the F Type. A current spec P450 with the V8 and AWD (8 speed auto, new and much improved interior and infotainment) would be very nice but it's definitely wider than a 718 Cayman. What she really needs for the roads round your place is a GR Yaris

What about an Audi RS3 saloon? Looks pretty nice IMO and usefully shorter than the RS5 and probably a bit narrower too. Plus it has the fab 5 cylinder engine.

Based on the criteria given, the F Type is probably ithe only option. A good option though, I’d have one.

Would a Macan be sporty enough or lightly used 911 4s?
The TT RS would be an interesting alternative

The GR Yaris might just be oddball enough to appeal possibly.

F-Type all day long or an an Alternative and a car I really like a Lexus LC500 but if she wants a Cayman 718 Cayman T are slightly better optioned then then vanilla version so might be the one to go for. Only other alternatives I can think of are a good used DB11 or if 4wd a Bentley Conti GT Or Supra, Alpine, Z4 How cheap are Polestar 1's now? I'll get my coat.

Some sort of 4 series with xDrive? Can you get one of those "car bra" things for the new 4-series?

I would not need much persuasion to get an F Type - mine would (will?) be RWD "R" flavour but I've driven the V6 S and it was lovely. Early F Types had bad reports for ride quality, not sure what they are like now - that would be my only concern in a rural area, the amazing ride/refinement of the XFR is one reason I've been 6 years in them now and not looking to change. Pete on here loves his F type and reports the 4WD is very driver-focused, more like the BMW systems than the front led ones.
Which the Audi's system will not be, as is the Haldex mostly FWD system, but it is supposed to be much improved and personally I have a long standing crush on the TT RS. It is a sports car, it will go fast, feel special, and go round corners, plus I'm guessing its a lot narrower than an A5. It is not going to give those last few 10th's as a drivers car for a "hand" - just how does your wife drive? Cayman and F Type are going to feel much more alive to a really keen driver, but they are all great cars!
As to some of the other suggestions, hot hatches and mummy chariots are not sports cars. They may do the same - but that seating position in a sports car, and the looks of the thing, makes it feel special and - if you care - makes a huge difference.

Early F Types had bad reports for ride quality, not sure what they are like now - that would be my only concern in a rural area, t I'm often a bit suspicious of reports like this, very little criticism was made of something like my F31 320d but it DID have hard suspension for what was in effect a family estate car, definitely NOT a sportscar. It was fine by me but I suspect a majority of buyers would have been putting up with it rather than being happy with it. My biggest concern with an F-Type would be the relative lack of visibility after a Cayenne. e.g. The door mirrors on the 370Z were over 50% the height of the glass and created a huge blindspot for Mrs Tim so that's the kind of thing I'd be checking.

To follow on alf's comment, an RS5 just isn't a "sports car" is it? It may be a lovely lesson in efficient Teutonic technology and bloody quick, but sexy? Hardly to my eye anyway. And I know the TT-RS is a lovely thing but the Halfords tack on spoiler (especially on the roadster) just looks silly.
You want beauty, sexy and a sports car, get an F-Type.

There isn't anything sexy about a few of the suggestions! If 4WD is a must, then there really is just the TTRS, F Type and 911 that fit the bill and are a sensible size.

I can say lots of nice things about the F-Type, but you need to drive one (which is difficult at the moment). Notwithstanding personal preferences, the coupe is a great all weather sports car you can use every day because it has enough refinement to be usable without diluting the sense of occasion or the underlying character. I described my P380 awd as a “loveable, hairy arsed gobshite “ and I still stand by that. The 21MY cars have traded elements of the inner yobbo for greater sophistication, but it’s still got F-type soul, you just need to push a few more buttons and work the engine harder. Disable the quiet start and keep it above 3500 rpm and the world and his dog will hear you before they see you – but if you want to be discreet, the option is there. I’ve never really understood the criticism of the F-Type interior, I think it looks great, it’s solidly screwed together and the materials are generally very good, especially on the cars with the extended leather upgrade and performance seats. I’ve never cared for the type face of the dials or the silly tubes they sit in, but I struggle to think of anything else to criticise and as long as you go for a 19MY car onwards, they all have the full widescreen infotainment using the same system that is in Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. 21MY cars introduced the full TFT screen replacing the dials. Unhelpfully, Jaguar partially embraced the Porsche strategy for equipment and it can be hard work finding the right combination of options on the V6 cars and the new 21MY P450s. Typically the Rs have always come with performance seats and the full leather interior, but it was an option on everything else, save for a few special editions. Personally, if I was after a second hand V6, I would go for one of the later chequered flag editions (P340, P380 and P380 awd) as they came with circa £9ks work of additional equipment: • Performance seats with full leather upgrade • Alcantara roof lining • Extended body kit with black pack • Heated wheel, red belts, illuminated kick plates, etc Additionally, the P380 awd was offered as JLR management car, so most of them had the following added: • Climate pack • 12 way memory, heated and cooled upgrade • Keyless entry • Secure tracker • Pano roof and privacy glass. • Heated powerfold autodimming mirrors • Park assist These are making their way back into the network (18 awd currently) and are around the 50k mark. The only downside to the CF cars is that they only came in 3 colours and the extended body kit is a bit sudden in red or white. used.jaguar.co.uk/search?_ga=2.255778318.701466050.1614599848-590348554.1603878266#/details/305303021MY P450s are available used (from £59k), but these are ex demos – the JLR management cars won’t start to come through for a few month yet (but they will be loaded to the gunnels).

Really useful info there ,thanks . Everyone else ..I tried talking her into the tt-rs but it’s too small apparently . I also tried the c43 but that’s too masculine . I think it will boil down to jag or cayman I think I don’t want to buy new .she does about 2-3k a year miles .

I'm not overexcited by the carbon discs and the very sudden calipers but I suppose you could replace with iron when the time came and get the spray can out for the calipers.
