Just had a look and you’d need a MY17 car to get the later infotainment, but it’s only on the higher spec models (look for Touch Pro) which would stretch the budget to £19-20k+. This is the cheapest I can find, it’s another £5k but it’s a lot less than half the age as the one earlier in this thread, so is much better value. www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202010094790535?atmobcid=soc3Evoques do seem to hold their value. That one in the advert is 2WD I think (ed4)? But agree the later cars are better value re miles, tech and newness-factor. The Kia Sportage does seem to be liked by everyone who has one. And the 7 year warranty is not to be sniffed at. I had passenger rides in an ex-colleagues and I think it is nicer inside than the Hyundai equivalent (which is the Tuscon).

I like the Sportage, but avoid the 1.6 petrol. I had one as a courtesy car once and it was utterly gutless.

There's not much missing from the spec sheet on that, is there? That, actually, ticks all the boxes and it has the Kia warranty until 2024 so a massive safety net in case something breaks. These rich metallic reds look amazing in the sunshine, too, but does it class as dog's cock red?!

No, it’s a very nice red imo and you’re getting an awful lot for £15k, especially with 3 years manufacturers warranty left.

The Kuga's interior is so dated, plus I am disappointed with Sync3 as Android Auto doesn't seem to do much. I don't bother using it after having given it a try-out I agree that it is looking a bit old now and is from a previous generation of Ford models but it still looks OK, if a bit over fussy on details. What's the issue around Sync 3? Can you elaborate? Sync3: Supposed to have Android Auto and Apple Carplay.... I don't use carplay. Android auto - you have to have the phone tethered by cable, it won't work by bluetooth. I have never managed to get the phone screen to replicate on the SYnc3 screen, never managed to get Google Maps to appear or any other app to work on the Sync3 screen, I just couldn't see the point of Android Auto. Maybe it's just me, maybe the system is out-dated on my Kuga, no idea. Maybe I should have another go and see if a recent update to Sync3 has made a difference. I'm not a fan of in-car touchscreens, finding them a bit hit and-miss to use when on the move. "Real" buttons are so much better. I prefer to keep my phone in my pocket, and use a stand-alone TomTom satnav that has lifetime map updates and lifetime traffic.

Chris, I don't believe the car screen fully replicates your phone but does it instead by a series of icons for various apps. The cable is necessary due to data transfer capacity limitation via Bluetooth. I think.

I agree. I have just shown that to Mrs R and she approved whole-heartedly. I did start out looking at the pre-facelift version of the Sportage. They are a firm favourite of shed-pullers and fair well in tow car tests. So one like that could be the ideal solution. We are 2 weeks away from a house move so once that is done the search will step up to full pace!

Chris, I don't believe the car screen fully replicates your phone but does it instead by a series of icons for various apps. The cable is necessary due to data transfer capacity limitation via Bluetooth. I think. You can get Wireless CarPlay/Android Auto and if you don’t have it, you can buy a device that plugs into the USB and allows you to connect wirelessly and run it for about £60. The Golf has a wired connection and I use CarPlay all the time, but I haven’t bothered with a dongle as it’s better to plug in on longer journeys so you don’t arrive with a flat phone. Chris - If you’re running Androidauto you’ll definitely be able to use Google maps, might have to scroll onto a second screen to find it, but you can edit the Home Screen (at least you can on CarPlay), which will be different than your phone Home Screen. I’ve run CarPlay on the last 2 Mustangs I rented and it worked well, much better than the standard Ford navigation (it’s also better than the VW one)

My BIL has the pre facelift in mid range (2?) trim and that has heated leather seats, panoramic room etc and they’ve not had any issues with it in the 3-4 years they’ve had it.

Yes, a joint agreement is, on this occasion, a pre-requisite. From what I have read and heard they are thoroughly capable cars, reliable and then there is that excellent warranty to fall back on. Add in about as much kit as you can think of and there is rather a compelling case.

Just be careful the e models 2wd not 4wd

It does look good in the sun, especially if recently polished, but can look a little dull at this time of year. It is a good spec though and I reckon Jane would be happy with that as her daily. As I said, the Sportage is the favourite SUV of middle class families in this country so getting a high spec one is quite a bonus.

Update! I advertised the VRS a week ago and last Sunday a trade buyer came to collect it and paid promptly. I was asking 9k and got 8.5k for a very quick and seamless sale. Trade in was at least 1k less than that for the couple of places I tried. After driving a borrowed van for a few days, later this morning we will collect a 2017 17 plate Kuga 2.0TDCi 180PS AWD Powershift Titanium with a few nice options, bought privately for £13900. Pics to follow. About 3 weeks ago Mrs R and I test drove a Kuga Titanium X 150PS 2WD and a Sportage KS3 AWD 134PS. The Kuga was instantly Mrs R's favourite and, in driving terms, the Kuga was quieter, smoother and generally a nicer thing to drive. The Sportage, whilst loaded with more kit, felt more compact inside (lower roofline), the seats were a bit flat and not as supportive and the steering was lifeless. It was noisier and the ride wasn't as good (both cars were on 18s). It was also clear that the 134PS felt underpowered. Torquey low down but then the power ran out and that was it, whereas even the 150PS Kuga felt much more willing and it has that Ford chassis and steering know-how that, whilst being a SUV, still manages to inject some driver involvement into the mix. I had been set on Titanium X spec as it is the only model to get the active bendy xenons - strangely it doesn't seem to feature even as an option on any other cars I have seen and I have viewed loads on Autotrader and other sites. In addition Titty X gave full leather, pano roof and power tailgate. Now, there are quite a few out there in 2WD 150PS form but numbers dwindle and prices go up accordingly in AWD form and many of these are the 1.5 diesel rather than to 2 litre. There is a myriad of different option packs as well, so some cars have quite nice additional extras. In the end it was a case of compromising on the xenons in order to find a car that has the engine and drivetrain and as many of the "must haves" as we could possibly get, along with age, mileage, provenance, etc. and not having to trail all over the country to go and find one. The car we have chosen is about 15 miles from home, private sale due to a bereavement, detailed service history and 27k miles. It's also a Titanium rather than Titanium X. Now, I have seen a few Titanium spec cars for sale with a lot of options, so there must have been some kind of sales push or big fleet order, or a load of dealer demo cars sent out around the same time. Ours has a spec that, in terms of outright features, puts it beyond a plain X, including pano roof, power tailgate, Family Pack - remote child locks and a 230v socket in the rear, self parking frippery with front as well as rear sensors, city safe camera gubbins, reverse camera, Winter Pack with heated seats, heated steering wheel, heated washer jets and headlight washers. All this in addition to the standard cruise, half leather trim, Sync3 nav, etc. So we lose out on xenons and full leather trim but gain in other areas. I will probably fit a decent aftermarket set of xenons as the light units are projectors and the beam cut off should be crisp. I can always remove them for the MOT. Oh, and it already has a towbar which saves spending another 500-600 quid. It is on 17" alloys which look a bit small but the ride is spectacularly good. I might find some used 18s at some point. (And, Chris - it has a spare wheel!) It's white, it's a Kuga, it's not very exciting but it ought to fulfil it's requirements fully and I doubt it will even notice the caravan on the back. I'll pop some pics up later, if anyone hasn't fallen asleep by this point! EDIT: photos of a white Kuga. How exciting! The large silver bumper protector on the towing hitch is going imminently. It's a removable tow bar but leaving it on does sort of protect it from careless parking by others.

Sounds ideal for what you need and definitely worth going for the more powerful engine when you'll be towing. Shame it's a white SUV...but it will match the shed! As Mrs R likes it, does that mean the Captur is going as well so you can get something more interesting as your daily?

I was pleasantly surprised when I drove a mate's Kuga a couple of years ago. It was a 2010 with about 60k miles but felt very solid and the handling was quite astounding for something a bit taller. It was firm but not harsh, especially after a 3 Series on 19s with run flat tyres. Do you find you're attracted to white cars given your day job

Well-specced Ford in 'nicer to drive than the mainstream competition' shock. An excellent choice and I hope it serves you well.
As Martin said, surely this now opens the door to swap the Captur for something more frivolous?

Nice choice- looking forward to the pics.
I've been looking for something to replace the Octavia recently (got that itch to change, no other reason) and the possibility of a Kuga has been on the list, alongside vRS estate and Focus ST estate (Yeah, I know!!!)

It sounds absolutely perfect for the job. I'll bet it'll be a great car to live with on a daily basis.....not that you'll know, you'll be too busy with a hot hatch.
What's the options with that?

I need to work a bit more on the idea of having the Captur to sell and then finding something more interesting. It will be a slow process but if I chip away at it, it might work! We are doing various bits of work on the house currently, too, including 6.5k on a new drive, so it might have to push into next year. We'll see how it goes...!

Diesel vRS is such a complete all rounder. The best way I can sum up mine is that it just did what it needed to do all the time. No fuss, no drama. It just did it. That it was relatively subtle but still nicely "sporty", pleasantly punchy and dead cheap to run just added to the mix.

Having now done a decent journey to work, I can say that it really does ride so well on 17s that I can't see any point in upping the size to 18s or 19s.

My Kuga's on 18" wheels and the ride is OK, hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine. My biggest gripe is how easily the paint chips and marks, but of yours is "Frozen white" like my C-Max was, that was one of the toughest paints I've had and basically never chipped in 2 years. You've got some useful options too, I've not got the self-parking feature and thanks to a bit of a dealer cock-up the front parking sensors on mine are after-market with a LED colour-coded LED strip at the base of the windscreen and no bleeping. With 178bhp and AWD it can certainly pick up the pace quickly, when required to do so, it's certainly the most powerful car I have ever owned by a long way.
With headlamp washer jets, are you sure yours doesn't have xenon headlamps? Mine does

Chris, only Titanium X and Vignale came with xenons, active bendy xenons at that. It wasn't an option on any other models I don't think.
I might try some Philips Ultinon LEDs. Pricey but likely to be good quality. Driving last night the dipped beams weren't too bad and high beam was fine. Some upgraded high beam bulbs and xenon LED dipped will be ideal.

The washer Jets are part of the Winter pack (£345). I know this because I have trawled though historic price lists because I thought they were xenon only as well.
If you are interested the family pack was £150, driver assistance was £550, park ass was £425, pano roof £900, power boot £350 (£450 with foot operation). Appearance pack £425, and white paint £250.
Price assuming I have the right model year and date was £29595 otr + the options.

So it's got the Titanoim-X trim but with one or two other items that aren't on the Titanium-X (no heated steering wheel, no 13A socket in the rear, no kick-to-open tailgate for example). cbeaks1, do you know what's happened to Ford's ETIS system? You used to be able to put the reg plate in and get the complete build list with all options/features fitted to your car, but now it's watered right down and gives next-to-no info on the car, unless you register as a dealer and pay a monthly subscription

It was made a trim level so it could be residual used by CAP et al.
