If I had the money, this just might tempt me to buy electric for the first time

Where does this leave the Golf? Or does this sound the death knell for the Golf? Or is this going to be the "Golf" of the future?

That does seem a wilfully dull way of parting with nearly £50k.
I must be getting old because that looks like a £25k car tops to me.

I must be getting old because that looks like a £25k car tops to me. £25k for fairly large (4.7m long, so IPace size) electric car with over 300 miles range and a decent spec? That's not an age thing.....just being out of touch, the most basic 1.0 Golf Life has a list price of £23k. IIRC Fiat want £30k for the top of the range 500 Electric and the ID4 First Edition Performance is £40,800 (list price) less grant, so £37,800 which feels like decent value against other electric cars, that's not far off £30k less than a basic IPace.

£23k for a Golf with a 1 litre engine? That's a lot of money for a washing machine.

Yes I’ve just seen the Autocar piece on it being £37.5k whereas the previous piece suggested nearer £45k.
That helps.
Yes I’m sure I’m out of touch. But prices have also soared well above the rate of inflation in the last five years.
List price for my car just four years ago was £48k including options. A 2dr coupe M440i optioned to match is £61k!
That’s staggering - a price increase of over a quarter in just four years.

Some of it could be accounted for in the extra safety tech and light hybridisation included, but not much. With your example, the M badge will account for half the increase!

The salesman we spoke to when we picked the 430 up said they were busy and had been right through.
I think that might be used cars though

I think the number of cars for sale on AT has increased significantly in the last 6 months or so, it used to be about 450-475k but it's comfortably over 500k now.

Good quality used cars are commanding a premium just now because the dealers aren't getting good quality trade ins with new car sales (because they are way down). Arnold Clark are paying good money for quality cars as a cash buy because they need to keep the stock moving and the staff employed.
I dare say that the £'s fall against the Euro over the past 3 or 4 years is more than a contributing factor to the increase in the cost of most new German cars. In addition, when you compare what someone has to pay for a car in Continental Europe v UK we do very well - the price increases may also be an attempt to close the gap a bit.

Vines tried many lines of attack when they were trying to interest me in a new BMW last year, but not once did they suggest that I could get in a newer car for less money.

Do you still have the silver 320 Touring? I can recommend an upgrade to a 430d Tempting.... but I do like the Touring shape and how useful it is. Plus I can walk towards it, pop the rear hatch, and the dog will run and jump in. You can also park up and lift the rear glass so he can look out and get fresh air.

Just a bit too big though.
I really like the 5 to look at inside and out - it's day and night better than the current 3 - but I'd need at least one child to cart around before I could remotely justify the inconvenience of such a large car.

I read late last year that there is expected to be a glut of used cars appearing in early 2021 due to people who have been furloughed or who have sadly last jobs having to offload cars that are on finance, payment holidays coming to an end, etc. I don't know to what extent this will prove to be correct.

I assume you mean your F31 generation of 3...even as a Touring, the current G-whateveritis is nowhere near as neat, balanced or cohesive a design...to say nothing of attractiveness.
