I wonder how many Golf MK8 GTI owners will take their car on track? If they do they will probably modify it in any case. I was just wondering if this is the conversation we would all be having if it was 20 or 30 years ago! In another 20 years it will be how many miles it does to the Kwh!

You just need to get a 440i Tim. It's the solution to all your problems.

You just need to get a 440i Tim. It's the solution to all your problems. I know. Find me a black or grey one with red leather, Harman Kardon and pimp glass and under 30k miles for less than £25k and I'll buy it. On a related note is there any particular criteria for them to have:- a) the black grille b) the black grille but with double spokes like this one usedcars.bmw.co.uk/vehicle/202009304408781?quoteref=305d03a4-82fe-4ea4-a87a-f9ca341e5af8

Genuine M Performance grilles are about £100 on eBay, supplied by BMW dealers.

The middle one is the best / nicest option imo. I know red leather is what Mrs Tim wants, but it’s too much with the red plastic lower dash and it’s Dakota leather. The middle option has a much nicer interior thanks to the Merino leather and digital dials which will make it feel a bit more modern. It’s more money, but the low mileage makes it worth it, just a shame it doesn’t have adaptive dampers.
Both have voodoo LEDs, that would be a non negotiable for me.

Thanks John
That first one's been on for a long time.
Martin the pale leather is an absolute no. I really detest beige or ivory leather, I'd much rather have black. The red leather with red dash is a lot less offensive in the flesh than in photos. I went to look at one last year just to see how bad it looked and was pleasantly surprised.

We need to find one with black Merino then! Phrases like 'less offensive' and 'pleasantly surprised' suggest red isn't the best option for you

He's probably only being offered about £22K, maybe £23K at most, from dealers....and it is still in manufacturer's warranty.

The leather colour is more of an acquired taste as well, that won't be helping it sell. It has the basic LEDs, they don't just lose out on the voodoo tech, they aren't as bright as the Xenons in earlier cars and barely any better than halogens (I had a hire car for a week with them) but I suppose it depends on what you're used to.

The Ipswich one is probably closest to requirements. I see it has a USB port in the dash ahead of the gearlever, what option does that signify because it seems a rare occurrence?

I thought that was just an LCI upgrade. Mine had a USB in the cubby under the central armrest. Can't see if the black one has it but the Sytner car is an LCI (sliding lid on cup holder rather than a lift off lid) and doesn't have it so the bottom line is I don't have a clue!

The 320 has one in the cubby and another hidden away in the glovebox. I've seen the dash mounted one a few times but not certain if its part of a pack or not. Seems slightly amateurish though

I'm not sure. It might change the colour around the dials but the dials should stay the same. My 4 series had the non digital dials but the M5 has the digital ones that look just like analogue ones - very similar to the Dundee car. Mine look slightly different in Sport and Sport Plus but the basics remain identical.

That looks nice, silver trim notwithstanding. The sunroof was an expensive option and in my view well worth having. The only thing it's missing is adaptive suspension, but I think the suspension settings were revised for the LCI model. My mother's Countryman was bought new from Coopers in Ipswich and she had a pleasant buying experience and has had no complaints over four years of maintenance with them.

The biggest downside to it is that it's suffering from budget creep and eating into my Top Secret 370Z plan.......

I'm sure you could get that for £25k.
I'd expect not many people are buying cars at the moment, particularly not the pricier and more less family-orientated sort.
I shelved my Macan idea, principally because I realised that I last put petrol in my 440i on 2 November on our way back to London from the Eurotunnel, and it still has half a tank remaining. When I'm using the car that little, there's pretty much no justification for very expensively upgrading what for the next few months is going to be little more than a driveway ornament for 95% of the time.

Does Mrs Tim have access to business car leasing rates?
Private leasing rates are not nearly as favourable.

Best part of that is the dash material. Can't stand the great slab of aluminum on the dash of most 3/4 series you see for sale. As well as looking rather cold it clashes with any interior colour thats not black
