It's always the way...having said that I hadn't bothered ever fitting a sports exhaust to my current car because it sounded nice anyway...I've just gone and ordered one... I happened across an advert from a couple of BMW dealers saying that for a limited period they were offering the catchily-named "M Performance Power & Sound Kit" for £1,595 including VAT and fitting (instead of the standard £3,016). This boosts power and torque by around 10% to 360bhp and 370lb/ft, as well as making it sound rather snortier. See here: www.cotswoldgroup.com/bmw/parts-accessories-offers/m-performance-power-and-sound-kit-pound1595-offer/So I rang the parts department at my local BMW service centre and asked if they could match it. They went away, had a think about it and came back to say that yes they could. So, car's booked in for 31 January for a third birthday present. It should hopefully help keep me interested a while longer and must surely be cheaper than a new car. Says my man maths...

That’s a real bargain!
It’s an official BMW accessory so not in the ‘Barry’ category and if it gives the car a new lease of life then that’s even better.

You're planning on keeping the car, then ? :-)

Well I guess that perhaps they have excess stock to clear out, given that the F30/1 340i is already out of the production and the current 440i coupe and convertible are due to end production in June (albeit that apparently the GC version will carry on until 2021).
It was an expensive option so I'd guess not many took it up at the full RRP.

You're planning on keeping the car, then ? :-) It's a 4 yr PCP so yes, for at least another year. And I could foresee keeping it beyond that. It's only got 22k miles on the clock and there's nothing I particularly want that wouldn't cost substantially more. What did surprise me was the impact on the insurance. You always hear that modifying cars is bad news for your insurance policy. Well, the impact of this mod (which counts as two - one to the engine and one to the exhaust) is....£9.50 for the remaining 9.5 months of the policy. Which is, frankly, nothing.

Did you read the bottom bit about recommending new brakes so you don’t set yourself on fire with your extra sporty driving?

Did you read the bottom bit about recommending new brakes so you don’t set yourself on fire with your extra sporty driving? Fortunately, having added the MSport Plus pack when I ordered the car, it came with the upgraded M Performance brakes as factory-fit.

You’ve got the M Sport brakes, not M Performance but the difference between them is much smaller on the 440i as they’re the same size front and rear. So not worth upgrading as it’s really just the style / look of the disc and the pads that are different.

Does the Performance exhaust come with any switching facility or is it on loud all the time? I have to say that I keep mine in the on position except when I have my early morning starts (don't really think it makes much of a difference) but when I use Sport it gets a bit louder and then SportsPlus it is up for plenty noise and all the popping you could want on the over-run.

Apparently it is a cat-back system with a valve that is closed in Eco & Comfort and opens in Sport & Sport +.

I’ve got the M Sport exhaust, doesn’t have a switch like the M5, it opens the valves up in Sport then steps up again a bit (slight grrr om a gear change) when you put the gearbox in sport. No Sport Plus on a cruiser, I’ve got Comfort Plus instead!

Sounds like the start of a slippery slope to me. It'll be large MSport badges on the rear hatch next. 😁

That's just made me think of something I haven't tried - I will need to see what happens in SportPlus with the exhaust button turned off. I'll try that on the way home.

My mighty 320d has an MSport or MPerformance exhaust (I'll have to clean the exhaust and check!) but there is no change to the sound when you switch between modes and I've never been aware of it ,aking any extra noise apart from a slightly odd burble as the engine switches off.

Easiest way to tell (the non-Carbon ones) is that the steel M Performance ones have the M-logo engraved on them at the top of the rear trim piece - clearly visible from above where it exits from the bumper housing.

With the standard exhaust it has at present, mine can oddly sound better in Eco than Comfort - almost as though the dampened responses make it burble more at low speeds. In Sport Plus, it's all snortier and you already get a noticeable touch of "brrrrp" on full bore upshifts and a light cackling and popping if you back off.

That looks like a nice little upgrade. I had a similar experience with the insurance on the V60 after fitting the Jetex exhaust. It made - no difference to the price!

Dropped the car off earlier for its mini-makeover and hopefully it will be ready by the end of the day.
There was an immaculate Tanzanite Blue 435i GC MSport in the customer parking area which had been treated to the MPPSK and various other MPerformance trim enhancements (but standard alloys) and it did look much better than the stock 430i GC MSport parked next to it.

Duly barried. There’s a noticeable difference in tone even in Comfort. Sport is pretty aggressive!
