Looks great Jonny . Love the colour
My mate had the M performance exhaust fitted to his 140i and it was totally worth it

Thanks all. Yes, pleased because in Comfort the change in tone is subtle enough that I can tell but my wife can’t! In Sport, it’s noticeable immediately- much more aggressive and baritone sound - I’d say closer to an M4 than before. It’s a little loud for my liking on start-up but I knew that having had two previous cars fitted with MPerformance exhausts.
Difficult to say whether it feels more eager - possibly but I’ve only driven it in London so not really the circumstances suited to finding out.
As you might have noticed, I also had the black grilles fitted. I ummed and ahhed about that for ages but as soon as I saw them fitted, I knew I’d made the right decision. Looks decisively better.

I hope so, it looks bloody marvelous. Doesn't it ! Just needs new plates to get rid of the "GB-EU" logos Obviously I won’t be going out to change the number plates...in fact last year I went out and bought some of the blue GB stickers with the gold stars whilst I still could. Brexit be damned.

I clocked the grille but wasn’t sure if they were new. Looks great, I thought you preferred to debadge?

On the topic of badges I definitely wasn’t expecting these little horrors down below the rear doors!! It was dark when I picked the car up and I didn’t spot them. They have to go!!

To be fair my last car also had those M-badges on the wing and so I'm used to them - never crossed my mind to remove them.

To be fair my last car also had those M-badges on the wing and so I'm used to them - never crossed my mind to remove them. When I placed the order for the 535d I ticked the delete option on the order form for the side badges as well as the one on the back (2 separate options), but it turned up with them on, so I asked them to be removed before I collected the car. The 750 had them on the side and the badge on the back, so they were all removed prior to collection. Apart from a general dislike of badges, I don't have an M car, they look out of place just stuck onto the wing and they're really cheap/thin plastic. Just my opinion of course and one I know most don’t share!

A pet hate of mine is the habit stealers have of adding their sticker to a car. If they want to advertise they have to pay.

Tbh the M brand has been diluted so much that the point you make about not having an M car is rather a moot one. Such is the propensity of the badges on the sides of most BMWs now that they almost lock odd without them.

Exhaust - Good Black Grille - Bad

It’s a little loud for my liking on start-up but I knew that having had two previous cars fitted with MPerformance exhausts. I dropped my daughter off at swimming on Sunday morning and when I started the car as she walked away, she gave me one of those willowing looks that said she thought I should act my age! However I love the sound but get a bit embarrased when I have an early morning start and know the neighbours have just had a wake up call. I love the black grills which really suit the 4 series which otherwise has silver headlights running in to a silver grill.

As I say, I've prevaricated about the black grilles ever since getting the car. I never liked them on my last car (where they were not of my own doing) but on this one, I think they are an improvement.
I think it's also colour-related. The M135i was black, so they got totally lost. The 440i, in the metal, is quite clearly not black, but rather a very dark blue and you can that the grilles are a different colour - they also match the shadow trim elsewhere on the car, which frankly doesn't have any chrome on it anywhere other than the exhaust tips.
Had the car had the chrome window surrounds (which I personally like as they add definition and length to the shape, but which weren't available on pre-LCI MSports), I'd have left the chrome grilles. But it doesn't, so on balance I prefer it fully de-chromed.

Racing - I think the black grilles suit your car too, and are an improvement

I prefer the black grille too, particularly on silver. I'm not a fan of chrome. Whilst shopping secondhand you obviously have less choice, I'm pleased mine came with the shadowline trim as an added bonus.

Looks good dechromed. More menacing without being brash.

It does on mine, the valves close and the revs settle down straight away.

Don't know about reverse, but drive helps a bit provided the car moves.
Hitherto, when leaving our house, I used to just drive up to the gates and then wait a few seconds for them to sense the car and open automatically. My new routine is to first open the gates using the remote in the car before turning the ignition on, so that I can leave immediately with minimal idling time...

They'll be saying "that nice young lawyer gentleman at number 3, who we all thought was very sensible, has gone and barried his beemer. The government must do something. "

Very considerate of you, but what about the next hour or so when you’re waiting to get out onto the main road?

But what does your local fox community think? Hopefully it hurts their sensitive ears. Mind you, their ears can clearly cope with the prodigious DefCon 5 shrieks that they hurl at one another at this time of year, so perhaps it doesn't...

It does on mine, the valves close and the revs settle down straight away. Left to its own devices mine will immediately start to about 1800 rpm, sit at that for anything between 5 and 30s dependant on temperature and then settle down to about 800 rpm. I can put mine into D immediately and nothing happens unless I touch the accelerator when the revs drop and the car then engages drive and moves forward. However it doesn't seem to like that very much and resists upchanges and is a bit jerky for a quarter mile. When I go to the bottom of the road and stop at the give way (because you can't see a thing!), the revs rise up to near 2,000 and even though the car is in Drive it is as if it is in neutral until I press tha accelerator again. The car obviously has some inbuilt warm up routine it is desperately trying to carry out whilst I am trying to stop it for the benefit of good neighbourly relations. I do wonder if my neighbours will just get used to the noise and will cease to hear it. It's not as if I am starting up a Caterham, tuned WRX or straight piped menace - it just has that low down bass sound that vibrates your chest if you are up close......and it puts a smile on my face every day.

Must check my own plates to see if I need to do the same. I need to, as well! Exhausts look good. I'm sure the sound is lovely.

I heard it from the outside today for the first time after my wife dropped me at the tube station. The car was in Comfort mode and she didn't exactly hoof it away, but it still sounded very good. Purposeful.

My 320 has the black grilles and having browsed a load of black 3/4 series I have to say I much prefer them to chrome.
