I have a Sonos soundbar which, to be honest, does a better job of music than it does the TV sound. I think that's down to the fact that the TV's optical output is shit and that's the only way it can be connected. Problem is that I had no way of knowing that would be the case when I selected it. weird - I thought optical audio outputs all sent out the same data, and since it is digital is should be down to the kit connected to it to make a good fist of it. Or does your TV just output the 2 channel "PCM" format without the option for Dolby as well? i have to use the PCM format as I'm using 2 channel audio but it sounds excellent. With TV speakers I always find the "virtual surround" is shite - the new one has some fancy 7 channel thing but on basic sound it sounds so much punchier and more natural. I don't mind the sound just coming from ahead of me, but I do want good quality sound! I never know whether it is worth connecting all the individual components into the amp/sound bar or just the TV optical audio out - I'm not sure if you lose anything by relying on the HDMI to the TV then the TV's audio out. What I do notice is a very slight lag doing it the latter way - I have to turn the TV sound totally off to avoid it sounding poo.

Same deal Richers has had running for a couple of months now. They also have one that's £13k off. But still costs £12k...
I'm hoping that size will have come down to something more palatable in 2-3 years.

Very nice!
I ended up using the "expert bright room" and "expert dark room" on my new LG LCD most of the time. Only sport looks a bit weird on those settings, the standard setting is better for that, slightly tweaked. The "HDR effect" is good too, possible the best for SD TV. I read into it and apparently TV's are set up to look very vivid under neon lights in shops, it's not a good look at home. Cinema mode is very similar to the "expert" ones too - all take a bit of getting used to, they don't have the excessive whites and so on, and skin tones look a bit brown at first, but they are more realistic and look especially good with 4K and HD content that is well produced, like The Crown, Victoria, and so on. Only Amazon's 4K seems to be "proper" HDR in that the HDR symbol comes up and the picture settings are the separate HDR ones. On 43" 4K is not much different at the distance we watch from, but the odd landscape shot can look stunning.
I also ditched the speakers and got a Yamaha "sound base" which sits on the next rack down of the stand. It's nothing like hi-fi separates for music but very decent, and makes the TV sound far better without muffling voices - indeed they are clearer.
Our TV looks great for HD content, and streaming - I'm amazed how good things like Gilmore Girls and Friends look on Netflix when they are not at all recent, but SD TV does not look as good, possibly not as good as on the old Panasonic, which may be because it was 37" and therefore SD was less noticeable. We mostly watch streaming now though, and it's the source that's the main issue. The LG smart TV stuff is all excellent, doing everything on one device is great.

I see what you mean - I hadn't seen that. Even older models (mine's the one before) are on there at retail.
Daft, because something better will always come along, and I suspect it'll be like Pioneer's plasma division in that people etc will end up being hoovered up by a competitor. Pioneer's ended up at Panasonic.

What do you need though, apart from 4k and normal BR plus DVD (which they will surely do)? I don't think any of the UK ones now do multi-region for any of these formats. That's why I kept the old CA one (which was an Oppo in drag) - it plays R1 DVDs without needing to be chipped.

Possibly. But then large scale, double blind testing a while back showed that even discerning ears can't tell the difference between CD and SACD*, so does it really matter? I did buy a few SACDs, but won't be buying any more.
*lower noise floor excepted, for which you need to be at Motörhead volume to really pick up on. Most SACDs are hybrid anyway though, so even if new players won't play the SACD layer, they will play the CD one. I'd also have thought that those who were pretty fussy about music reproduction wouldn't accept the compromise of playing music on a universal player any way. Jack of all trades are seldom masters of them all.

Don't know if my eyes are good enough to tell the difference! In any case the price is way beyond what I consider reasonable for my limited TV viewing.

Being the earliest adopter is never a good idea. Less expensive than I would have thought, but 8k is really only going to become relevant as TVs get ever bigger. 77" seems to be becoming the new 65" etc.

Apparently John Lewis claim that 55" TVs are the biggest sellers and they're also not stocking DVD players from hence forth as they sell so few of them. They will continue to sell Blu Ray players that play DVDs though...

Our (55”) Sony TV is developing small black areas around the edge of the LCD screen and I’m fine with that, as used TVs are worth relatively nothing and I wanted to buy a beer/bigger one anyway, so this make the man maths even easier. We went to JL and our favourite was the LG C8/C9 and talking to the LG guy, the only difference is the sound which doesn’t matter as we’ve got a surround sound system which I want to change as well, ideally to a proper Dolby Atmos separates system. I did a bit of research when we got back and was pleased to see that WhatHifi agree with us on the best 65” TV! That will be quite the change as I’ve never had anything other than a Sony TV.

Yes, I measured it and only the beam will work but that’s out because apparently there is a big lip sync issue with SKY and LG if you route the sound through the TV. It’s down to £2399, seriously tempted but it’s been an expensive month.

The C8 is £1999 in the Black Friday sales in 65" flavour. Where have you seen it for that price?
