Really? Maybe in Man-world, yes, some of us like massive black electronics everywhere but I doubt it is universal! This is the ALF lounge - the distance between TV and main viewing sofa on the bottom left is over 5m. That leads to suggestions from those silly "what tv screen for my viewing distance" websites of 90" !!!!!!! The screen in the pic is a 37", but the casing is 42" corner to corner so more like a modern 40. 49" on a stand would foul the speakers in my room (and I care about 2 channel audio - its a red line for me to get rid of them) and also the cupboard door to the left, used regularly. Speaker stands start at about this height and the speakers are small. I'm minded to put the screen on the wall and move all the hifi /XBOX etc up to the shelf on the left, but that has its own issues. Either way a 49 or 55" panel in here is going to look massive, and this is not a small lounge by modern house standards.

I can’t see your picture, but it wouldn’t look massive for long. We have a fairly decent size living room (8m x 4.5m) but thought it looked borderline rediculous when we moved from a 40” to 55”, but that lasted a couple of weeks at most before it looked fine. A 65” would fit nicely on the unit in our living room, so that’s what we’ll be getting next.
Edit: I can see the picture and understand what you’re saying, the sofa might be 5m away, but the space in the corner doesn’t give you much room to go bigger.

Too close together, too close to the back wall, too close to the corner, and the coffee table does not help either. That said, I've got a pretty good ear, and it sounds surprisingly good from a few points around the room, including just in front of the viewing sofa, so I went with my ears!

Feel free to elaborate on the rest of it...! I’ve not had my hi-fi out since we moved to this house - 7 years ago! It all currently resides in the loft along with some more old stuff I brought back from my parents the other week with a view to selling on eBay once I’ve tested them (an old but good Sony tape deck and a Rotel pre & power amp). My CD player (Roksan Caspian) stopped reading some CDs reliably a long time back (and frankly not really much need to fix now) so that might be going up for spares/repair also. I won’t get much but it’s doing nothing in the loft. Back on topic we have similar issues with the location of our TV so have a 40” but our viewing distance is only about 3m or so

CD player might just need its lens cleaning. Worth buying a lens cleaner from Amazon and running it a few times, as that's a pretty good CD player by anyone's estimation.

Feel free to elaborate on the rest of it...! It's very low rent by your standards 12th! Expensive separates Hi-Fi in a proper room is a bucket list thing, probably in retirement! This is simply a best-buy but budget pair of Dali speakers (which are amazing compared to budget separates hi fi from 20-25 years ago when I was really into it) hooked up to an Onkyo 2 channel amp which is unusual in that is has two digital inputs and D/A converters. So I have a Pure iPod dock which has a coax digital output connected to one, and all the TV/Blue Ray (doubling as CD player)/Apple box/XBOX connect to the optical digital input. It gives decent sound for someone who wanted to keep the ability to play iPod or CD in good quality stereo. I don't need surround or an AV amp. I used to use analogue audio outputs/inputs for 2 channel audio from all components except the Blu ray player (which doubles as CD player) but plugging everything into the optical digital input is much neater. I currently use HDMI to the TV then the TV's optical output to the amp, but have a little Toslink switching box and more cables so will have the units all connected direct soon. I could lose the old Panasonic Blu Ray player and just use the XBOX for Blu Ray and CD, but even to my eyes the Panasonic Blu ray player gives a better picture on standard DVD and Blu Ray - if we ever get a 4k TV and try ultra HD Blu Ray then I'll probably ditch the old Panasonic then....

Sounds like there's some thought gone into it - nowt wrong with Dali...
Having seen my brother's recently-bought 4k set, and now that there are titles coming on stream*, I am tempted to replace the current set with a similarly-sized 4k one, and leave a bigger size for a couple of years. RS's website still shows 77" ones as stupidly-priced, though one of the £20k ones did briefly come down to £7k. I think the market would be more competitive if plasma had co-existed with OLED, rather than disappearing.
*I'm buying 4k blu rays now, as my blu ray player is UHD (even if the TV is not), so it will 'downmix' them to HD. Not future-proofing, but a step in the right direction. Just don't buy them when they are first released, as there is a significant price premium.

Well we did finally leave the last century and bought a 55 inch Samsung QLED . From Currys, it was £1499 with a free bundled in soundbar. Which we sold on-line as we're playing the TV sound through the hi-fi. So TV, cables, new bluray player, less cash for soundbar, delivery, removal of old unit etc saw us pay £1500 overall.
The picture quality is exceptional. The OLED / QLED was way, way ahead of the cheaper stuff.
We worried that 55 inch would be too big but we've already got used to it.

How little there is of tvs now , I don’t think 49/50 inch panels look big at all in an average size living room I agree. I've got a 43 incher and while I was initially delighted, it's not something I'd brag about down the pub now.

We can’t physically go any bigger than 50” as that is what fits in the space. The room is about 4m wide so that is perfectly acceptable to me.

Completely off topic but Mrs. Sacamano has developed this fascination for moving to a "barn conversion" and spends her free time pouring over Rightmove etc. In retaliation ('cos I don't want to move) I have now convinced her that I have an irrational fear of wooden roof beams (I don't) after an unpleasant childhood incident with a rented Lake District cottage and woodworm. So far it has worked like a charm.

One of the joys of designing your extension, if you are like me at least, is doing so around the hifi/AV. With the benefit of hindsight I'd drop the stand a little and move the flanking windows apart a little further, but hey ho.

Just pressed the button on one of these to keep hifi stand "as is" but upgrade to 4k - and more importantly have iPlayer, Netflix, now TV, and Prime all on the TV itself!!! www.lg.com/uk/tvs/lg-43UJ750VSeems like a decent option for £500 - LCD but with LG's equivalent of Samsung's quantum dot, with better viewing angles...

I got the tape measure out (not for the first time to prove a point!) and it's barely wider than the current one. The screen jumps from 37 to 43 which is not massive, but at the moment we view a lot on YouTube, Netflix, iplayer, Now TV etc and use 3 different devices for that plus a blu ray player. Whe the girls have worked out the new remote (and LG gets good reviews for that) it will be a hit!
I'm really interested to see what 4K looks like for things like The Crown, which is deliciously filmed and looks great even in HD. I think the photography on it is stunning.

Having managed to get our internet up to a decent speed (up to 170mb/s at the wall), I'm getting Ethernet cabling added for the extension and my office so we can try streaming in better quality.

I got the £599 LG 43" UHD LCD up and running this weekend, LCD but a bit like Samsung's "quantum dot" LCD in that it is a relatively high end panel for an LCD: www.lg.com/uk/tvs/lg-43UJ750V I have to say I am very pleased with it! It barely has a bigger imprint than the old one. UHD image quality is, as you would expect, breath-taking( I had never even seen it before in a shop) HD image is very good too, but the biggest revelation (and a good one for someone who's other half is not at all keen on having "proper" sound on) is that the standard sound is miles better than the 7 year old Panasonic Viera 37" it replaced. Despite the "Harmon Kardon" spec I was not expecting this from something so thin, especially as the reviews highlighted this as a weakness compared to bigger panels, so they must sound truly excellent for standard TV sound. IT is much better with the "surround effect" off. The picture also has a much more 3D-like appearance, especially in HD and UHD, and even on the standard picture setting (which, very slightly tweaked, I far prefer to the others except occasionally the "UHD" effect one). It's weird, the picture on the old Panasonic looked great, but the new one has a real impression of depth, which I did not expect and can't explain. The Smart TV stuff is excellent, we watch NOW TV, Netflix, and Youtube a lot - in fact I wish all of those had a button on the remote instead of just Netflix and Amazon. The "magic remote" is a bit small and shiny but I like it, Mrs ALF is not so keen, it moves a cursor around on the screen and a slightly bigger normal remote with bigger buttons (and also play/pause/fast forward type controls like on a DVD controller, since we watch some much streaming) would be good. I have a universal remote that has the latter but tiny buttons. I think at some point, give I hardly ever listen to audio, I will get a sound bar and put the hifi amp and speakers into storage... I'll have a look into sound bars that actually sound decent for 2 channel audio... Overall though, for less money than the last TV cost, a winner!

We have this sound bar www.richersounds.com/q-acoustics-m4-blk.htmlIt’s friggin immense for what it is , and is at the bargain price of £249 at the min, which is what I paid last August (normally hovers around £350) It’s great as a sound bar for the tv (James bond on blu ray for example) , but also great for music through bluethooth, Pumping out a real clear room filling sound .

You can disable the TV volume when using remote speakers. I was also very limited by a shallow TV stand as to the height of the sound bar.
