Generally it ticks all the right boxes but is slightly disappointing in the styling dept (like most VW products recently). A bit too Citroen-y?

It's inoffensive.

Looks like a Golf from two generations into the future. I quite like that.
I think the removal/reduction of grilles may end up doing the car styling work a favour.

Black roof (why isn't it solar panels?) and rear pillar graphics look good to me. With a near-400 mile range the Skoda Octavia Estate version of this (presuming that there will be one in due course) should look really good.....

Black roof (why isn't it solar panels?) Adds significant weight and costs for minimal real world gains.

Indeed. The 2000 model C4 Picasso lives again.

A tentative thumbs up from me. I think it mostly looks good, and is unlikely to be too much of a leap for the majority of the current VW customer base.

I can never understand why electric/hybrid/alternative fuel cars have to look wilfully different or so obviously "futuristic". Why can't they simply be styled like everything else or why can't everything else be styled with the kind of imagination thatis allowed on cars such as this? Why is there some kind of separation?

There was a comment about this on Autocar from JLR. They were saying that because the mass is in different places than a regular car they need to do things different, particularly crash safety. Aerodynamics also matter more, of course. I don't think that justifies the weird graphic on the C pillar but it illustrates that we need to get used to the difference.

Why make it look like an MPV? - I thought they were yesterday's news?

Better an MPV than a so called SUV. Most of which are 2WD anyway.

I quite like that. Neatly understated.
The wheels are a bit overdone though.

There's something a bit late 1990s Mercedes concept car about it...

Still not overly sure on the styling, however it will sell well regardless.

Nowhere I know but a 4wd look with 2wd seems a bit pointless to me. Horses for course tho.

It's in between the rules about being white and having a git plate!

I can appreciate that packaging has much to do with it, proportions mostly, but the ID3 looks like the concept version of a Golf, shown 2 or 3 years before it's finally released with vastly toned down styling. However, the styling remains. So I still don't quite get why that is unless is is purely marketing, in showing us that we are having that futuristic concept car now. Which all seems a bit false to me.

^ Proportion / looks: An all-electric car does not have to have the same architecture as traditional petrol or diesel cars so the styling can be totally different but it still has to meet crash legislation.
The biggest issue is probably whether or not to offer something that looks like a traditional car as the public accept that shape, or go for something radically different which works with an all-electric car, but which may scare buyers away as they don't like its novel appearance. Look how opinion was divided when the Sierra was first launched

I feel like we seem to place an overemphasis on styling, and that most buyers don't really care what a car looks like as long as it meets their needs. Look at the Prius and Nissan Juke. Polarising looks but still selling in spades.

Hard to say, but 'boring' SUVs aren't exactly slow sellers either.

The Juke isn't the best selling small crossover in the UK for nothing; its the styling that makes it the best seller, Captur is the second best selling, both of them are the most stylish of their ilk IMO.

The original Quashcow was a snorefest on wheels and that still flew out of showrooms...
The interior of this VW seems to be the same quality as the T-Roc, which is a shame, especially as it's probably nearing twice the price.
