Ran my last race before the marathon next month. It was the penultimate race of the Dublin Marathon Series and was a half marathon. I’ve had a sore knee for the past few weeks so took an evening off training this week and felt the benefit. My previous PB at half marathon distance was 2:07 which I set as part of a longer run 2 weeks ago.
Today I ran just under 1:56, hitting new PBs for 10k, 15k, 10Mile, 20k and the half.
5 weeks to go and happy with the fitness levels!

Oh Gosh, where to even start. I've cared for my mother for years. It got to the point it was pretty much a 24/7 job. Me and the Mrs could only go for short trips out when mam was having a good day plus to be honest I've been struggling with stress and depression. I had two sisters, one a nurse and living next door (she has since died) and the other living just 10 minutes drive away. I asked them for help. I asked for one to come for a few hours one week and the other the next so that's a few hours from each once a fortnight to allow me and Mrs to have a break and go out without worrying. Both sisters blew up and after insults and shouting at me either in person or down the phone they cut all contact with me and they took their children / grandchildren with them, but not after my niece sent a distressing message to Mrs WW. Why msg her? I don't know. Nastiness? A touch or racism creeping in? So, we cared for her alone as we had done and lost all our immediate close by family. That was two years ago. On 16th September mam got up and dressed herself which she hadn't been able to do recently and I thought she was having a good day. later she became very confused and I thought she may be suffering from delirium which she had had twice before. I thought that after a trip to hospital and some fluids she may be ok but sadly her heart was failing and she had fluid on her lungs and it was possibly the lack of oxygen to her brain which was causing the delirium. We stayed with her for 15 hours until she died at about 05:30 on 18th with me stroking her hear and telling her I loved her. As she was my mam and caring for her was such a big part of my life I've been devastated, I still haven't got over the muscle memory and when I get up my first reaction is to go and help her get dressed etc. Mam said she didn't want the family who had deserted us at her funeral but I felt I couldn't stop them and as executor I had to contact them anyway. The insulting niece and the sister 10 minutes away now want to visit the funeral director and attend the funeral plus my sister is now asking for copies of photographs. Photographs of a family she hasn't spoken to for two years, suddenly she wants to see the body, attend the funeral and have photos? Plus she's questioned the church venue. This is the church we go to and the one I used to take mam to. The stress of all this has been immense. Honestly, there have been times I've had thoughts of how I could escape all this. Families eh? I'm just longing for this to all end so me and Mrs can build a life without my family causing ever more upset. Sorry to share I just felt the need

Possibly better in the other part of the forum.
Sorry to hear of your loss mate, talk often as needed and when you feel able.
Families? Well going by another thread we have most of us got first hand experience of that. Perhaps just 'be' with your other half and sniff the caffeine product, either way allow yourself some peaceful time.
I'm glad you are here and talking, maintiaining a presence and the same degree of humility we all try to demonstrate every day. Being good enough IS good enough and perfection unachieveable. Sorry, rambling but I think you know what I mean.
Each and every day, one at a time.

Thanks Mike.
Talking does help and I suppose even just writing this all down on paper would help clarify things in my mind. In my darkest times some years back I made a list and how I could change things and I did change many things for the better. I had to do another list as there are obviously things to do when a loved one passes and I thought I was at the end of that list or there abouts. The addition of the request for pictures is I suppose a small thing, it's the family related upset that's caused todays little melt down. Time will I suppose help. At the mo I just want all this family strife behind me. What I sometimes do is think that at some time in the future all this will be behind me so the target now is to get through the funeral and then the legal side of things should be sorted in 4 to 6 months, so my target is to get to January/March and each day lived through is another day closer to it all being sorted in Jan/March.

Went out for lunch today and parked beside a disabled space. When I returned to the car, there was a car parked in the disabled space- an Octavia I think- which had the driver inside and no disabled permit on the windscreen. I got into my car and mentioned to my colleagues that the driver was probably parking there for just a few minutes, which is good because the disabled drivers who might need to park there would probably be capable of being able bodied for those few minutes until the Octavia moved on…
Then this afternoon, my customer took it upon herself to make some configuration changes to a machine that I’m in charge of installing for her, without mentioning it to me at all. She notified a colleague after she had made the changes, despite being told before not to do this. We found out just before leaving for the weekend. I won’t be giving up any of my free time to fix this mess, it’s been escalated to the senior managers as she is neither qualified to do this or allowed to do this. Should make for some interesting conversations on Monday, especially if we refuse to finish the job because of her tampering.
To put it in perspective, the machine has cost $3.5m and she is not allowed to work on it until it’s formally handed over to her.

I'm so sorry for your loss WW and the way your sisters have treated you. There must be some possibility of them inheriting something from the estate as I can't imagine it's a coincidence that they are suddenly sniffing around. Where there's a will there's a relative eh? All I can suggest is that you just let a solicitor sort that out and don't waste your energy getting into fights. Just remember that you did your mam proud and now you can rest easy knowing that she's at peace and had you with her to the end. All the best mate and I agree with Mike, maybe get Mark to give this it's own thread in the members section.

Thanks Alex.
My sister and my niece will both get a considerable amount of money. I'm an executor and have done everything I can, my sister is too but has done nothing and that's fine by me. Now it's in probate with an expectation that it'll all get sorted in 4-6 months.
The funeral went as well as can be expected with good attendance and cream cakes for all afterwards (Mam loved cream cakes so I thought I'd honour her with two storage boxes full for attendees. They went down a treat.) but none of my local family showed up. I was on one hand relieved but on the other disappointed that my sister didn't show up for her mothers funeral.

At work we have a management catchup every Friday and this morning's was particularly useful (!). So, without using online search engines, who can remember the name of the band that did the song 'Toast' in the late 1970s and also who their singer was. Our CEO knew the answer to both of these without a search! Also, we had a roofer out at home to inspect the roof this morning and while there are a few slipped tiles what we didn't expect to be shown was his video of one of the chimney pots. It's still attached to the concrete that's used to attach it to the main chimney but the concrete isn't attached to the latter. I've moved the cars away from underneath that as he barely had to push it to get it to tilt

Obviously someone well known but not to me! I am off to see Gabrielle on Monday night. Last time I saw her was in the Armadillo and the sound engineer should have been shot. The band were loud and she sounded as though she was singing in the room next door. It's in the Glasgow Concert Hall this time so the acoustics should be good.

Years ago our cats had obviously brought a bird into the house and it had escaped or she'd got bored. We never knew. Until it hopped across the hall one morning as we were both getting ready to leave for work. Judging by the size of the pile of bird poo behind the cupboard in the hall, it had been there a while.

She had hits from that album of Rise, Dreams and Out of Reach. Most of the rest of her chart hits were covers or less successful. I am just a fan of live music so any excuse to go and sit and listen for a few hours.

When the weather is poor we sometimes sit in the back of my Evoque and have a picnic. We have some camping chairs to use in the back of the car but I find it a bit uncomfortable as the back seats don't go down completely flat... until today when I learned that I can take the base of the back seats out and then the backs do fold down flat giving a flat back area.
Poor stuff from LR though as there's something sharp down the side of the seat base and it cut my finger leaving blood all over. Thankfully it cleaned off the leather ok.

YaY!
My mobile phone can again both receive and make calls. What luxury.
I was with Lyca mobile but due to some difficulties (a cyber attack?) my rolling contract wasn't renewed and my phone stopped working. They were a nightmare to contact and every contact was a lesson in the worst customer service possible so I switched to Lebara and it's taken a week for them to bring my number over and get it to work.
I have to say that contacting Lebara is imo about the same experience as contacting Lyca but at least I do now have a working phone.

I've just moved from EE to GiffGaff. I was paying £36 a month and Lindsey £26 per month. I've got both phones all in for £21 per month on a non contract basis.
O2 who they piggyback off have improved their signal in our area and we now get 5G. We could barely pick them up when we first moved here.

Mobile phone coverage is one of my bugbears; the Israelis can bomb the crap out of Gaza, reducing it to rubble, but the BBC can still get a video call going seamlessly with a trapped resident in a basement. It's 50/50 whether or not O2 can give me a phone signal that works in my house (in the centre of Newcastle).

Ran the Dublin Marathon today. It hammered down for about 3 hours of it so I got soaked. First half went well and I ran to the pace I was hoping to hit. Then my left knee started complaining and I had to slow, walk, jog, hobble for the remainder of the race. Took me 50 minutes longer than I was hoping for, but I finished it! I decided to put whatever I had left into a strong finish and ran the last km at a normal pace, which was way faster than those around me, so the crowd started cheering me on. It felt amazing to be honest, and now I’m off to the pub to enjoy the post race refreshments with my running group.
Rodge, almost 50, finished a marathon today, and at 7pm, my watch is telling me I’ve done 56864 steps…

Isn't the issue in the press that trans women (and I always have to check which way that one is going and its man -> woman) want to use the ladies. Surely if he wants to use the gents he / she / they must be a transwoman who identifies as a man. What's that all about?

Interviewing interns this morning. All being done over teams which is handy as I came down with a heavy cold yesterday and decided to work from home today. Reading their cvs has reminded me of how important things are when you’re 20/21 and are getting your first paid role in your chosen profession. Some stuff doesn’t matter to the interviewer but is included to fill your cv. Some candidates are brilliant but not a good fit for us (we don’t have a position their skills would use) some aren’t as good on paper but are impressive when spoken to. One person who interviewed had nowhere to live for 3 months over winter last year, and his grades dropped off a bit. He worked full time during that period at Starbucks and got back to uni afterwards to continue his studies. Others applied because it’s a job opportunity. One was late because his computer wouldn’t connect- he worked in the first company I had a job in after I graduated. Anyway, an afternoon and another day of interviews are ahead of me.
