Rather annoyingly, the rear screen of my car decided to spontaneoulsy explode on Chirstmas Eve. I thought at first some of the local neddery had been up to their tricks but, on reflection, it seems such events aren't uncommon with Skoda rear screens.
More annoyingly, Autoglass can't replace it til New Years Day, so I am relying on the goodwill of Herself for essential journeys til then. It's a real pain in the bum, let me tell you!!!

Bad luck. Bin bag and duct tape. Funnily enough, that's exactly what I did! Now with added stableyard heavy-duty plastic sheeting!

Bad luck indeed. Why do these kinds of thing always happen at the most inconvenient times?

So it's a possible known issue?

Bad luck, and hope it gets sorted soon..... one issue with Autoglass and their likes seems to be that they have done away with having any premises, and only do at-the-roadside repairs which means a somewhat protracted process to book a slot. If you need glass replaced urgently, it now seems next-to-impossible. Suppose you had been away from home visiting friends or relatives when this happened ?

So it's a possible known issue? Seems so Stu. It was the former forummers known as DarthBalls who pointed it out to me, having had similar on his Yeti.
I joined up to Briskoda for a look-see, but that seems to be the extent of their knowledge; all the threads I looked at (far from all of them, I have to say) were referring to estates, so hopefully you won't have this issue!

The New Years Day appointment is at a service centre about 10 miles away from me. To have it done at home/roadside would have been the 8th!!! I don't know if anyone else could have done it sooner, but the local place I tried didn't have the glass in stock and couldn't say when they would have it. Plus, it would have cost me full price rather than £75 excess; didn't ask what that would be though.

That is a bugger, and bizarre. Indeed it is very bizarre. It is the sort of thing you'd think hot or cold weather testing would find out. Or maybe they did find out and just thought "fuck it, it's too late to redesign it... "

It’s usually down to some stresses in the glass that have occurred during manufacture and are like a time bomb waiting to go off, possibly during tempering. We had a Velux pane go on a whim after 9 years, showering glass everywhere and there was no rhyme or reason, just a manufacturing defect.

Just got the car serviced. It comes with a complimentary car wash. In the queue to get it and there’s a car in front of me that I swear, is cleaner going in than mine will be when it comes out.

However, the owner of the car- Cori is her name- had just bought it. I know this because during the car wash, mine was one of 5 cars that were damaged by a pipe that wrapped around the spinning brush and hit each one. The passenger side of my car has not got dents in the a pillar, c pillar and on the door. The guy at the front had his passenger window smashed and his windscreen damaged too, and he’s facing a drive from California to Kansas this weekend. Apparently the place is good at sorting these issues so I’ll get it organized quickly. Nuisance though.

Had similar with a glass topped garden table last summer. We'd had it for about 5 years and one night there was an almighty bang and upon going to inspect we found the patio covered in tiny shards of glass. Apparently it can be due to a small scratch that puts a weakness into the pane.

I was very surprised by the low level of fireworks from the locals last night, just when you think you know people, huh.

Some time ago our Romanian forgings supplier asked if they could arrange transport to us as opposed to us using our normal international freight services and we agreed. Their first delivery has turned up in a Romanian registered curtain-sider and alongside our neatly packed forgings is a casket, body inside! No idea who.

We're probably +1 on illegal immigrants now then..... It looked pretty well sealed but I didn't take a crowbar to check. I suppose customs can't check everything and there must have been the necessary paperwork - the driver wasn't that forthcoming as his English wasn't great. I did wind our Goods Inwards team up by saying that the supplier had asked us to hold onto the casket until they can pick it up next week and to make sure we stored it correctly and didn't lose it. As I left they were working out which category it fell under.

Apologies for the fuzziness in this image; it doesn't look this bad on my phone! Anyway .. .. .. fixed!! Ooh my eyes. The rear screen on my Stilo shattered between Christmas and New Year (a few years ago). Suspiciously it was a day after I'd gone through a massive pothole. It broke when I closed the driver's door outside Tesco so not the first close after the pothole. Needless to say that on the repair day it was pissing down, I had 15 miles or so to drive and the temporary fix blew off after the first mile! I was most surprised at how wet the rear view mirror got during the journey.

^ It used to be problem with Skodas that if you pressed too hard on the rear glass as you were pushing them (or trying to keep your hands warm in the winter), it could shatter. I thought they were better now though?

According to a piece in Delayed Gratification, China used more concrete during 2011-13 than the US did during the 20th century...
