Went to younger daughter's place at the week-end to fit a wall bracket for her TV so she can finally watch it (she's in a very, very small flat). Took her post from home to her, 2 letters. One of which was a recent private parking company fine for her old Fiesta that she sold almost 2 years ago (traded in against the A1) plus she's changed address since changing cars, and not from our home but from her previous flat.
No idea from where they got her details but can't be the DVLA (surely?) as they haven't sent VED reminders to her for the car and she's had (and most probably binned) the confirmation slip that she's no longer the registered keeper. As I expected, trying to contact the company to inform them of errors is next-to-impossible with phones that answer with a prerecorded message then cut you off. All set up for you to go online and pay a fine.
I don't know what happens if they send bailiffs round to our place; this was a "final reminder" implying that they have sent out previous notices, but to whom and at what address?

I don't know what happens if they send bailiffs round to our place; this was a "final reminder" implying that they have sent out previous notices, but to whom and at what address? I’d just tell her to ignore it. It’s not a fine, it’s and invoice for breach of contract. As she was not the one who entered into the contract by driving into the car park they manage, she is in no way liable. Bailiffs can only come round if the company gets a court order against your daughter but it’s not likely that they’ll be able to do that. See this guide from Money Saving Expert www.moneysavingexpert.com/reclaim/private-parking-tickets/

I think they still have to prove she was driving and not being the current owner tends to mitigate that. Like most of these people they are shouting in the hope of a positive result.

Had a 'spooky' moment yesterday, when it seemed that technology was doing stuff I had no idea it could. I bought a 2nd hand Amazon TV box (not stick) from Fleabay and started teaching it remote control codes via an IR adaptor - all so that my remote could control it, like it does everything else. Turns out that it was already responding to IR codes sent to the TV, which must be reaching it indirectly via HDMI from TV to amp to the item itself.
Fuck me, that's clever...

I had a similar thing where my Panasonic TV remote was able to control the Sony Blu-ray player I connected to it without me having to do anything.

Is this crazy?
One of my colleagues moved up from Kent a couple of years ago. Her husband still lives there in the family home while she rents a place in Dundee. Every second weekend she goes 'home' and until this week that has involved a 5 minute walk to the station in Dundee, a train to Edinburgh, tram to the airport and a flight to whatever's closest to her home. Either that or she's got the train the whole way.
However she moved to a new rented flat last week and it's 3 miles out of the town centre. So, rather than get a taxi or bus into town with her suitcase she's driven in and will leave work at 4pm to drive home tonight - about 450-500 miles, and drive back to Dundee on Sunday night!

She's back in today looking none the worse for wear.
I still think she's daft. Need to find out what her car is though, I'm guessing not something like a VW Up.

I've a friend who lives in Huntly and works out of Heathrow. He drives to Aberdeen airport and flies to work every week.

Where I was working until last August, we had a contractor working for us in Basingstoke who lived in Edinburgh. Every Monday morning he flew from Edinburgh to Southampton and caught the train to Basingstoke. From his first week he had a bicycle that he left at the train station and he cycled into us on Monday morning. During the week he was living in a rented flat; on Fridays he finished slightly early and cycled to the train station and reversed his Monday journey back to Scotland.
Nice work if you can get it !

It's quite common - my step-father-in-law did something similar, working in an office in central London opposite HMS Belfast and living in Perth. I think he got a flight from Dundee to London City on the Monday and the same return on Friday.

Huntly to Aberdeen is a sufficiently long commute anyway, let alone adding in a fright to Heathrow on top

^ Our Captur is £20 and I hope it doesn't get any sogtware update at its next service that affects its driveability. Seems that there are a number of Capturs getting an update that worsens their engine's real-world flexibility Really? God, it's not exactly over-endowed with flexibility to start with. Or maybe it's just that it's hampered by a 5 speed box when it needs a 6.

So far I've got zero complaints about the engine/EDC 'box in my Captur, which I think has 6 forward speeds, not the 5 of manual transmission 'boxes

It needs 6, not 5 gears, stacked more closely. That way the engine won't drop out of its power band as often. It always feels to be in the wrong gear.

Why does your friend stay there? If its anything like the East Neuk of Fife it won't be just English they don't like, it'll be anyone who isn't at least 5th generation born & bred!

Why does your friend stay there? He's English but his other half is Scottish. They probably have the nicest house in the town and can't sell it because no one wants to spend half a million quid on a house in Huntly! We went up there a few years back for a 50th birthday bash and some of the English accented people met with prejudice. One went in a hairdressers to have her hair trimmed and was told they weren't cutting hair that day. They were also hounded out of a pub where the locals didn't fancy welcoming them in and started talking very loudly about the lah de dah English bastards in the bar. I never saw any of this but was told all about it at the party.

Just checked and I visited Huntly in May 2012, and wandered round the castle. I think that's the place that has the biscuit factory you can tour as well.

I've been invited to another 50th in Cambuslang. Am I going to find myself with a glass sticking out of my face at some point?!
Also, on a totally unrelated note, I'm just wondering why I have a Chromecast plugged into a smart TV?
