Good catch! Just as well the pilot had a tail rudder; he'd have been a bit stuffed with one of the other kinds .. .. ..

That rudder was flapping like mad. Probably like most of those on board.

It's new steering wheel day It feels like I'm sitting in a new car. The old one was well looked after and not particularly shiny, but the difference is huge. Mine has some annoying scratches in the leather that I can just feel and a new wheel would be a very nice thing to have. Even more so if I could retrofit the gear shift paddles that later cars have. Which I can't.

That rudder was flapping like mad. Probably like most of those on board. Coming back from Mallorca many years ago on an Airtours DC10 there were gales as we were approaching Manchester. Being sat right at the back and the pilot having to use a lot of rudder is not very nice. I was glad when we touched down after bouncing a couple of times - we were warned of the possibility of a go around.

Saw a kid riding a Raleigh Chopper earlier. Was in very good nick, so I assume it was one of the re-release jobbies.

my 8 year old daughter goes away on her first school residential trip tomorrow for 2 nights and I have just finished packing her bags and you cannot believe just how much I am going to miss her and worry about her journey there on the coach and back (only 80 miles). Longest 2 days of my life and what am I going to do for the next 2 nights...I might even have to start talking to the Mrs

It's always nice when you get some positive appreciation of your car. Yesterday, I booted the XF away from a roundabout to overtake a couple of cars and a transit van that were on the inside lane of the dual carriageway. As we came to the next roundabout, the lights there were red. I was turning left this time and the transit van pulled up in the outside lane - the three blokes in it were all waving and giving me the thumbs up and beckoned to me to wind down my window. This I did to be told the exhausts sounded "epic".
I really must follow my car at full chat sometime...

I got Mrs Tim to do a standing start (not too vigorous!) and a couple of low gear, accelerating drive-bys not long after we got the Nissan. What actually surprised me the most was the auto-blip on the downchanges, by the time she was slowing down to turn round she must've been about half a mile away but they were very clear and pretty loud.

I got a "nice car mate" one evening last week when I stopped to put a letter in a postbox. Not sure it was a great compliment as the issuer was standing outside a pub having a fag on a Wednesday night!

Forget Chelyabinsk - this was the first meteorite to get widespread recording of its fall - Peekskill, NY, fell 25 years ago today. It ended up hitting a car, which increases the rarity and value for reasons that are beyond me (they are dubbed hammer stones). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peekskill_meteoriteAnd this is what it hit:

Watched Loopers on DVD last night. Very clever - see it. Essentially it involves time travel. Using it to send people the mob want to get rid of back in time so they can be killed 30 earlier so no comeback. But there are several twists to that.... I won't spoil the ending.
Oops - this should be in Films and shit...I'll post it there too.

I've not seen Looper but I did see a forum thread elsewhere that discussed it and the complete implausibilities (done in a humorous way, not by a nerd) of what it was proposing.

On Saturday I drove down to Bath from home in the Fiesta.... I went down a road between the A30 and the A33 to pick up the M4.... it's a long time since I hustled a car down that road and it was a joy to do so... reminded me of the many months I did the same journey regularly in the Honda when I started work in Swindon in the 1990's. The road had lots of undulations and twists/turns, a good surface and trees/grassland on each side so would punish falling off. Driving in a spirited way, the Fiesta came alive; reminded me very much of how chuckable the Honda was...... 85BHP in a car weighing around 750kg on skinny tyres against 100BHP in whatever-the-Fiesta-weighs on very low profile 17" alloys; felt similar

I bet it would be a disappointment, if you got anywhere near the limits of something like an Atom you would probably feel extremely uncomfortable due to the speed and forces involved and it'd probably put you off doing it to that extent again. At least in the Fester it will all happen at a relatively sensible pace.

Does an Atom have storage space for an emergency wash and valet kit?

I think the Atom would take a lot longer to wash - the frame would be like doing spoked wheels except on a much larger basis and with all the exposed bits at the back you'd be there for hours. Perhaps Chris could hire one for a week and see?

A few weeks ago I was driving through town and stopped at some lights, sat on a wall by the road next to me was a bloke with the distinctive coloured nose-cone section of an Atom cradled in his arms. No idea what was going on there but it has crossed my mind a few times now.

Does an Atom have storage space for an emergency wash and valet kit? I was more worried about the spare wheels. Can you have one mounted on the Nomad, if so maybe that's the answer?

I think if I'm going for a cross-country blat in a rented/loan car, I'd not be too concerned about washing it afterwards, or whether or not it had a spare wheel.
I'd also prefer the Atom to the Nomad as I would intend not to go off-road ;-)
Random information: Yesterday I was reading the "Car&Driver" mag I bought in Boston last month... less than 2% of new car sales in the USA are now "estates", "shooting brakes" or whatever you'd like to call them. Over 50% of those that are currently sold new are Subarus.....

How times change. I'm so used to ordering stuff on Amazon Prime at 6pm and it arriving the next day, that I feel aggrieved that something I ordered on Sunday was not dispatched until yesterday. Time was, one week to get something you ordered was considered good going.

I placed an order with Argos yesterday at about 10pm, and it was delivered shortly after 10am this morning... impressed especially as it was out of stock at the nearest stores (and the reserve/order-to-store functions were not working on the website).....

Leaving aside the said gentleman's sexual offences for a moment, Mrs PG and I were also discussing why his name is pronounced the as it is. Clearly others agree - as per this letter in the Telegraph this morning.
"SIR – Why is Harvey Weinstein generally pronounced as “Winesteen”? What of Einstein?"
