The "ice warning" light on the dash of the Kuga briefly illuminated this morning as the ambient temperature dropped to 4 deg C on my drive to work :-(
It was 5 deg outside my house at 7:10am and also where I work at 7:40

7 degrees in Glasgow - and the grass has stopped growing!
Last year I was still cutting the grass well into October.

People need to get a fucking life. Political correctness has been getting on my tits for years. The more I've thought about it, the more I think PC has acquired a bad name. I think most would agree that there's nothing wrong with trying to speak and behave in a respectful manner to our fellow humans, but it does seem to be a wall behind which those with chips on their shoulder/the desire to deliberately take offence/low tolerance of others themselves/little desire to live and let live/an absolute lack of sense of humour/the desire to be taken very seriously/little common sense* are perfectly happy to hide behind. I think the odds that a checkout worker means any offence by using such terms are slim-to-non-existent, and in my experience those who do so seem not to be choosing whether to do so based upon gender or any other discernible factor. I suspect it's more colloquialism than anything else.
*I'm sure my list is far from exhaustive!

I once got called 'Doll' by an older woman at an attended petrol station in deepest Kirkcaldy! It confused my 25 year old brain (it was a long time ago!) for a few moments but I certainly wasn't offended by it and it has amused me ever since, as it would if it happened again.

I am similarly amused by the odd person (in both senses) who chooses to refer to me as 'young man'.

Agreed, the Birmingham experiment of winterval (Christmas) was considered pathetic across the board and as far as I know discontinued. As far as the checkout thing goes, it must be really thrilling, not, working on a till and a little banter can be an improvement on a surly disinterested individual. I've wondered if that's the reason the likes of Aldi and Lidl checkout operators fire things through so quickly - for a wee bit entertainment!

There's a young barmaid in my local who calls everyone darling and such like. I find it a bit weird, as she must be less than half my age. I don't particularly like the over-familiarity of people I don't know calling me love or darling, but not enough that I would complain about it. I just cringe internally and let it go.

You are, in theory, supposed to dump everything back in the trolly and pack at the shelf near the exit.

I don't think it is the minorities themselves who want the majority to stop our festivals - more the handwringers who are worried on their behalf.

Handedness. According to the answer to a question about the subject in this month's Focus, chimps at 70% right-handed, kangaroos almost all left-handed (or should that be -pawed?), and whilst male cats are almost exclusively left-handed, the reverse is true of their female equivalents.
The suggestion with humans is that predominant right-handedness (90%) seemed to evolve between 2m and 1.5m years ago, with tools from the earlier date showing a mix of left and right, whilst those post the later being almost exclusively right-handed. Left-handedness, it speculates, may not have died out completely because it may confer an advantage of surprise/unpredictability in fighting, and that this might be why there are more left-handers in top-flight tennis than in the overall population.

Apples. A neighbour to the estate has several apple trees which overgrow at various points of the fences. These are quite heavily infested with Codling moth larvae. The other residents leave the apples to rot on the grass due to the infestation and the variety of apple being tart rather than sweet. My opinion is that if I have to cut away half of an apple it is still half an apple I do not pay for in the supermarket, win-win imho. Any other thoughts on the subject?

I am just mixed up: I write and golf right handed, I play tennis left handed, I serve at table tennis right handed but switch to play left handed and I can throw stones with either hand but if I am skimming stones only use my left hand (I was brought up in a house right on the beach so throwing and skimming stones was a daily event). If I had to punch something it would be with the left.

If I had to punch something it would be with the left. Me too! I write (such as it is!) left-handed, also use a spoon, single fork (as opposed to knife-and-fork, when I also use the fork in my left) computer mouse etc with my left hand. When I played badminton and later squash, it was right-handed, likewise snooker/pool - though I can play those equally badly with both hands - but boxed predominantly southpaw despite my right hand being dominant - confused a few guys doing that, not least myself! I don't really golf, though would play right-handed if I did, but have always shot rifles, shotguns etc right-handed; that's more to do with my right eye being dominant rather than anything else though. Almost exclusively right-footed though, the exception recently being a move to left-foot braking; I tried it some years ago when I first got the Legacy, and seem to be drifting back to it again, especially when pressing on.

My youngest is a lefty, apparently left handed-ness is predominant in psycho's.
I eat left handed and do alot with my left hand, but predoinantly I'm a righty, apart from my daughter, as far as I'm aware there are no other lefty's in the family.

I wouldn't risk eating an apple so badly infected. Anything like that and the apple would go into the garden refuse bin, as far as I am concerned

That is just an example, I got the picture off the internet. I only eat an apple when I can get at least 50% of the apple. I opened one this evening and a moth flew out so that went into the bin, the moth got out OK.

Random travel question into That Der London. If I purchase a return ticket via national rail and the route in via train goes into Vauxhall, and then says the Waterloo line into Euston - is the cost of the tube included? ie I presume the rail ticket I pick up at the station can be used on the tube gates?

So long as your ticket has the final destination on it and no exclusions (eg the infamous "not via Reading"), you should be OK. Alternative is to buy a Travel Card or Oyster.
If you can find anyone to ask at your local station, it may be worth doing so.... however if you are travelling when it's very busy you may find that your ticket will not let you through some of the exit turnstiles, and you can just seek manual assistance at the wide "luggage gates" to get through

Alternative is to buy a Travel Card or Oyster. Or just use contactless on your phone or card, it is the same price as using Oyster; about 40% cheaper than buying a ticket.

It's new steering wheel day It feels like I'm sitting in a new car. The old one was well looked after and not particularly shiny, but the difference is huge.
