Not for me.
A London-dwelling friend is looking to replace his trusty 2008 A3 Sportback 1.8T as it is getting on a bit and they find it not big enough for all the clobber associated with having a small child (and I guess they might have designs on having a second).
Criteria:
Mid-sized estate car (apparently SUVs are verboten and a 5 series/A6 is too big for their tastes in terms of driving and parking in London) Petrol Automatic Reasonable oomph (sub-8 secs 0-60) Decently kitted-out Leather seats As modern as possible as they will keep it for 10 years or so, so want the tech to remain current for as long as possible. Max £20k
Octavia VRS is current front-runner. Any other suggestions?

You can get a three year old Golf R estate with a DSG gearbox from a dealer for that budget.

Good Lord who specced that Audi??
With kids in car seats I'd prefer a SUV as it's less strain getting them in and out.
Obviously, given my recent purchase I'll say 3 series Touring but the Octavia in BB's urban camouflage grey is a good shout.

Focus ST estate, but that may be too down-market for them

Octavia estate with DSG. Vast interior space for its size, sporty, VAG bits so if his mates take the piss he can point out all the bits it shares with their Audi.

I'm not sure about getting something with DSG as a couple of friends have cars with it and aren't all that complimentary.
I'd vote for a 3 series estate.

I'm with Stu, they have quite a following and usually do better with the VAG parts.

I agree. I wouldn't want to run something with a VAG DSG gearbox for 10 years.

It’s very good and a better than a lot of Autos I’ve driven, but it’s not as good as the latest BMW autos, although they are at their best when connected to the larger engines.

The Cupra I drove with DSG was brilliant . Lightning quick changes and never got confused at low speed like I’ve read some journos experience .

Apparently BMWs are out because she's short and finds both the 3 Touring and 5 Touring difficult to get comfortable in.
And a Golf R is probably a no-no on insurance grounds I gather. Leons have been tried and not liked.
Apparently difficult to find Octavia VRS Estates which have leather and aren't white, red or lairy shades of blue.
A4 Avant is lead contender if they can find one. I have suggested, on the left-field side, a Mazda 6 Tourer or a Peugeot 308 SW GT.

So an A4 Avant it will be then! There are plenty of 1.4TSi versions about well under budget and a few 2 litres also available. Most of them seem to be black though with a few white and grey ones thrown in. Apart from that the colour choices are severely limited.

They want the 2.0 version.

Is it me or does the twin leather look different shades on the rear seat?

Cloth seats.
Not baby-vomit-friendly.

I don't have a car for them. But I do have a unicorn they might be interested in.

Engine/box aside, that's pretty much the spec of my 15-plate version. Herself has the engine/box combo in her Superb and loves it. I'm not sure the vRS is really the thing to be just 'tootled' round town; be interested in Stu's thoughts on that. Cloth seats. Not baby-vomit-friendly. The Alcantara-esque seats on mine (which I'm presuming are what they mean in the ad) are not the easiest to keep clean. God knows what baby puke would do to the material!

Children sit in their own seats and presumably puke on those instead? I've never had the displeasure but I presume that's what happens. A towel under the baby seat would protect the rest.

I didn't think it was that ridiculous a list of wants. Just a little patience required because everyone's gone SUV and diesel-mad in the last decade, so reasonably pokey petrol estates are not that common (a) in manufacturer price lists and (b) not that common on forecourts.

They look good, but I would opt for Sport trim rather than S-Line for a much smoother ride.

If they’re London based is a ten year plan realistic with ULEZ? They’re likely going to have to compromise on either the SUV or petrol part.
