That looks horrible. I think we will learn to accept the grill in the same way we accept the horrible bumper moulding and that ugly slab of plastic shoved on the corner of the intake. We might grow to accept it but that would never make it attractive enough to buy. In fact, looking like that I would actively avoid it. When I look at the grill on the photo Martin posted (the one where the door is open) I just can't believe that ever got signed off. It borders on offensive in my eyes. Grills half the size and a bit more imagination in the front bumper would/could transform the way the car looks for the better. Apart from that it looks OK and I really like the interior.

Hopefully it's not so hideous in real life. Much like the X5, in photos it looked shocking but when I've seen one it ain't quite so bad.

Martin, if you like the interior and aren't offended by the rear then the solution - come replacement time - would be to get one and ensure you always park it nose-in against a convenient wall/garage door/ etc.
It's not as if you can see the hideousness from the driver's seat and actually something that awful might actually clear a space in the overtaking lane for you.

If you find the Autocar article posted yesterday and look at the disguised car in (I think) the third photo you can clearly see how comically large the grille is. I'll try and find it in a minute.

How on earth did that get signed off?
Black paint with a de-chromed grille and surround is the only way anyone could attempt to make it acceptable. A deeply horrid thing.

I see the top 1/4 or so of the grille is blanked off on this, same as on the new 3 Series. What's the point of that? To me it just makes it look even less well resolved than if you simply had the huge grille on its own.

Martin, if you like the interior and aren't offended by the rear then the solution - come replacement time - would be to get one and ..... ... transplant the front end of your current car onto it. Maybe even Project Kahn could make an improvement with their "styling" kits

That’s monumentally revolting. I saw a G30 5er head on today with chrome deleted grille. Munter.

In light of JLR's news and a factor of that being a slowdown in the Chinese market is the styling excuse for all these grotesque 'upmarket' cars that they're targeting that market looking a bit shaky now?

Apparently the Chinese market in predicted to have a massive recovery this year. Is that due to so many people planning to buy new BMWs thanks to the huge grille?

Oh dear. They've gone and put the new wanky dials in as well.

I'll get my coat and expect a forum ban forthwith, but I don't think that's as bad as your'e making out. Yes, the grille is bold but it shouts luxury and money and looks expensive, the side profile of the new car with its slim headlights looks rather superb in my eyes, very well proportioned especially in Li guise. I like the wanky dials, different to traditional round dials but I like them. It has proper heating controls and proper buttons for shortcuts for the radio and other settings but there is definitely an air of luxury and expense.
runs away....fast

BMW have launched it in Shanghai, says it all. Evo think the new 750i will have the 522hp version that’s fitted to the M850i and it will have xdrive as standard. Even more of shame about the grille if that’s the case.

The other good news, for company car buyers is the 4 pot 740e is now a 745e with a 6 cylinder petrol engine and bigger battery/motor, 34 miles electric range and 389hp. No 4 cylinder engines at all as the 725d has been dropped as well.

I read there is also to be a quad turbo six cylinder 750d. That's not one for the nervous buyer when out of warranty.

That engine has been around for a few years, it’s the same as the X5/X6 M50d and the M550d, which isn’t sold in the UK. I wouldn’t want to run one out of warranty past 100k miles though.

Having seen a few now, the grille is slightly less offensive than it was at first in pictures, but still way too ugly for me to consider one. Which is a shame.
