Not a surprise at all following the X5 and X7, but that grille....oh dear. I suppose it’s quite imposing if thats your thing, but I won’t be rushing to get one. Its going to be launched on the 15th, so we’ll get to see it properly then.

I suppose it'll stop the 7 being mistaken for a 5 but bloody hell!

It will until they facelift the 5!

Audi, Merc and BMW used to have a horsepower race at the top end. Now they have a grille race. Who can make the biggest and most awful and pointless grille. It's pretty neck and neck at the moment IMHO. But BMW may be about to sneak ahead.

Do they have some discard designers from Audi?

I am hoping it is just the angle that is making that grill look so ridiculous but who in their right mind would consider that to be attractive? In fact it is so grossly ugly that I find myself embarrassed to look at it!

People criticized the Bangle designs but there was a design language there that could be defended and explained. It made sense and moved the brand on, reinvigorating the styling of BMWs for years after. I also think that they aged well and people grew into them, something which good design should aim for. Now BMW seem to just stick ever larger grilles on everything because they think that's what the Asian market want.

Why has "good looking" car design gone out of the window?
We have cars that feature different front-end (bumper) designs for different trim levels, so why not different bumper arrangements for Europe and for Asia rather than have "Asian styling" dominate in Europe where it just looks naff?

Completely agree, they all looked better as tome went on, I still really like the look of an E60 in M sport trim.

Agreed although I've recently seen a couple of low spec early E60s in pale metallics and it makes you realise the desirability of ticking the M Sport box.

Definitely. I always thought that Bangle designed what turned out to be the M Sport trim, then worked out how to turn it into an SE rather than the other way around.

Never mind the grille, the bonnet's pretty horrid, too.

What's the point in slimming down the headlights and then sticking Bugs Bunny on the front? That's truly atrocious.

It is as bad a feared. I saw an episode of The Walking Dead where they were throwing zombies into something that looked just like that grille. Minced them up good and proper. Maybe the designer is a fan?

It is as bad a feared. As a 7 spotter, I can tell you that’s the M760Li I think the grille on mine is borderline too big, but that must be a couple of inches deeper and made to look even bigger with the slimmer headlights. The interior is going to remain broadly the same, with only changes to the instruments from the 8 series (which I don’t like), the latest idrive OS and an updated HUD. It will look exactly the same to most people.

The picture I linked to looks worse than that one. Asian market special hopefully!
The grille reminds me of the scary heater in Home Alone.

It was the lower bumper that's different...

Another angle. I like the slim headlights, if the grille finished in line with the top of them it would be so much better The rear is very similar, slightly slimmer lights and a full width light strip like everyone else is doing, but as least it’s partly disguised by the trim strip.

When it gets to the stage that the headlights are smaller than the grille openings and smaller than the air intakes, fake or otherwise, it's a sad state of car design.
Wheel designs and light designs kind-of "make" the way that a car looks. Mess these up and the car will look awful (IMHO) as has been amply demonstrated above, I believe

That looks horrible. I think we will learn to accept the grill in the same way we accept the horrible bumper moulding and that ugly slab of plastic shoved on the corner of the intake. I think we will just grow to accept that modern cars look disappointing.

I hadn’t even really paid any attention to the huge openings..... Makes mine look even better!
