What’s wrong with an Alfa Giulia. Given your needs and previous car history surely it’s a perfect fit?

Jaguar XE are aluminium so they won’t rust and the latest facelift puts it at the top of the class for looks.

If you can get away with a saloon I think that’s a lot more desirable than a 3 series.

I only know one person who had an XE and it was the 2.0D as well. He liked it at first but after a year or so was less impressed. After 3 years he traded it for a 420D Grand Coupe and is hugely happier. I never talked to him in any great detail about it but I think build quality, some of the materials and crap dealer service were his main gripes. I do remember something went wrong under warranty and he had to fight with the dealership to get them to make a warranty claim. I can't remember what it was that went wrong (something in the suspension I think) but it soured his feelings for the car/dealer.

Yeah it does. Shadow Editions have everything thrown at them. It’ll have a heated steering wheel as well. I’ve had about 6 of them and they’ve all been identically specced. It was bugging me because the car Tim linked doesn’t have them, so I googled a price list and the Shadow Edition doesn't have heated seats or a heated wheel as standard. The cars you’ve had must all have been fitted with the comfort pack which includes: Interior Comfort package ZIC Comprises: – 248 Steering wheel heating – 493 Extended Storage – 494 Seat heating, front – 4AE Armrest front, sliding Extended storage is std so the pack cost a bit less on the Shadow Edition. Edit: Worth finding one with Professional Nav as well, the basic Nav screen looks....errrr....basic, with too much black plastic either side. Should have known better than to debate BMW specs with you! That car must be an orphan as know all the 6 or so I leased had heated seats and when I was looking for my own Shadow Edition, every one I saw had them to. BMW were knocking out thousands of them in the last year or so of that model's life.

BMW appear to do them in batches. When I was looking at 335d Tourings in M Sport flavour a year or so ago there were a lot around that were on 18 inch wheels and had no options at all, no privacy glass or heated seats. They'd be a great Q car.

For what you have as a budget you can get an updated one. HSE has every bit of FG and R Dynamic is the Jag equivalent of M Sport. I don't think you can consider an XE in silver with red seats an "old man's car" and god to see that Jag have finally reverted to how they used to do sports interiors and coloured seats. Everything black except the seats and door cards. used.jaguar.co.uk/search#/details/3028868

That’s very good value, must be £10k less than the discounted new price. It is excellent value. The D180 has just been replaced by a D200 MHEV. A new one of those in the same spec lists at just over £36k.

That looks good and appears to be excellent value. However SWMBO has just said that the front is Audi, the sides are BMW and the rear is SAAB! She really doesn't like the grille although that could be lessened with a black grille on a black car. She's really set her mind on a 4 series coupe now......

I can’t believe you’d go anywhere near another BMW especially what is essentially the same troublesome model. That silver Jaguar looks great. It has got a slight whiff of Audi about the front but it was when Audi made attractive cars and that’s been a while. I’ve seen a few on the road and I find them highly covetable.

If I was in the market for this sort of car, that would be high on my list.

My colleague’s XE seems to spend most of it’s time at the local JLR dealer awaiting parts, including a new engine at 50k so this colours my opinion of these cars negatively.

I understand that sentiment but the F30-series cars are not generally considered unreliable or troublesome. To date (touch wood) in four years mine has only had one issue - a secondary damper failed on the steering column causing a clacking noise on full lock.

And I had no problems at all with mine mechanically. The only thing I had an issue with was the lacquer on the wheels lifting around the centre cap - I got 4 new wheels under warranty.

Yes, but I know someone with a 3 series and he’s had several mechanical issues and now it’s going rusty. Seriously.....I do think Tim has been unlucky whereas with an XE you would need a bit of luck to get a good one.

The rust appears to be for a very specific reason and the transfer box problem could be avoided by not getting another xDrive. On the plus side we both find it very comfortable, it’s got loads of space, it looks good and is decent fun to drive when you’re pushing it. We’ve had a good look at the various manufacturers on autotrader but keep coming back to BMW. I fear we’ve become brand snobs

That is lovely Martin. I have always thought the Vantage was the best looking Aston ever and with a V12 it can only be a major experience every time you start it up.

The problem is it’s not a daily that would need to do 15,000+ miles a year and a 3rd car is not affordable right now. Lovely though.

Somewhat too long (and most probably too wide) for my garage, but at least it's RHD.....
