If I can recall my tv trivia, that is the full Dallas special is it not? Didn't Victoria Principal run The Man from Atlantis (Patrick Duffy) over with a red one of those? Racing, that doesn't put me off at all. I've actually driven a same age 500SL and while it was nice cruising around on a sunny day the laid back feel and driving style would cease to be of interest very quickly, I'm certainly not going to be spending a wad of cash on one of them. Having said that a trip to the auctions last year had me seriously considering a late 90s/early 2000s 300SL but they are only around £4k.

A lovely car but very much a wafty cruiser rather than a sports car, with an old-school V8 woofle which reminded me of my old Silver Shadow.

It is the "Dallas SL" in the same way that the following series was the "Princess Diana SL"...
As a dashing young Fleet Air Arm pilot, my father had a red 280SL "Pagoda" when my parents were first married, which has left my mother with an abiding liking for what she refers to as "those dished-roof Mercs"...and she likes the Dallas version even more. It's what I'd buy her if I won the lottery.

It is the "Dallas SL" in the same way that the following series was the "Princess Diana SL"... We always called it the "Charlie's Angels" model, although I think it was probably in more episodes of Hart to Hart than anything else. Aaron Spelling clearly had a liking for them Kraftwerk had a Princess Di one as did an old colleague of mine. I drove it one weekend: cumbersome is the politest way to describe its progress around the Surrey Hills.

I think this would be a risky purchase if you actually wanted to use it more than a few times each summer but I liked these from the moment they first came out, albeit not with the crappy bodykit this one has www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C979350

I saw that too. Mrs Tim was hanging her nose over one of those a few years back at a car show and if we had the spare cash I would've gone for it. I know the Karif isn't attractive, even without the bodykit, but CAR or Fast Lane featured it and there was a photo that sticks in my mind of the test car at full opposite lock with the positive camber on the inside wheel like BMWs have. Dunno why but it made me want one. Plus at the time I think it was one of the fastest non-supercars around.

That is beautiful but 4 things:- 1. Optimistic pricing! I was looking at them on C&C earlier and 25th Anniversary editions can be had more £250k 2. That must be just about the highest mileage one in existence. 3. They took the rear wing off! I'd have it re-installed, if you're buying a car for shock and awe value (surely the main reason for looking at a Countach) then the rear wing has to be on it. That's shock and awe to yourself, by the way, I wouldn't give a shit what passers by thought. 4. Most of them now seem to have the white leather and I'd much rather it was black so a retrim would be on the cards.

www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1152111I love these but would always take a Ghibli over the Kalif as I never got on with the roofline. The wood, the leather, I wish you could still order cars like this. Why do manufacturers only give you aluminium or carbon fibre now if you want something little racy.

The demand for an all beige interior with wooden steering wheel would be close to zero. That isn’t true, some still do give you wood options. Alpine is the obvious one, but you can also can get light brown, plum brown, fineline and piano black wood interior trim in an M5. I bet there aren’t many ordered in the UK, but the option is there for you, along with dodgy leather colours as well, which you’ll see in the second picture!

I like the top one. Not keen on the yellow. The top one has Tartufo leather, which is a brown leather I could get on board with, it always looks a bit orange in pictures but isn’t and does look expensive when you see it properly.

Tartufo with plum wood - how I'd spec mine, money no object...

Oh, I like that. The Tatufos a bit Caramac for my liking but if they've got something a bit more tan with that plum wood. In Oxford Green!

Its how I'd spec mine though I'd want the big wheels for the full concept car look. Bit of a shame that Lexus went for the full beige everywhere interior rather then half beige/black but its a stunning car.

The seat colour wouldn't be my choice, but the beige dash top and even worse, the beige steering wheel, are absolute deal breakers. Porsche do the same and it completely ruins the car.

This any better? Thats perfect! Is it a really expensive option on an M3 or M5? I think that's Caramel, which is only £775 extra plus £495 for your choice of wood trim. That's on the M5. You can get beige as standard on the M4, but that might be a bit light for you, other potential options are Amaro Brown, Cohiba Brown and Golden Brown, all £255 options but you'd need to add the leather dashboard to any option which is £1,075 then another £400 for wood trim.

Sonoma beige is too light and the browns are probably too dark for you, so best to order a new M5! This is Sonoma beige

So given all that, which looks very good value, why the hell are all the specs I look at in the classifieds so boring? Originally the only leather upgrade was the Smoked white which gave the upgraded leather and the leather dash (like mine). The standard leather colours were black, Silverstone (with a black stripe down the middle) and tartufo. You would need to be looking at an Aug/Sept 2019 onwards manufacture date to get the increased number of colours.

Worries about resale value probably, plus you're in the minority, a lot of people seem to prefer black interiors.
