I usually put the winters on my car because we drive down to Italy for Christmas (winter tyres are compulsory where my in-laws live) and then go skiing over NYE in the Alps on the way back. Last year, with the mega-snowfall, we wouldn't have moved an inch without them. Whereas with them, the car was very impressive.
However, this year we have the in-laws coming to us in London for Christmas for a change, meaning no drive to Italy/Alps. As such haven't decided yet whether to bother putting the winter tyres. Car's due its first service at the start of December so could get it done then, but just not sure it's really warranted in London.

Not sure what it is like now but, always used to be well gritted when I lived in London.

I'm not sure what to do this year. Last winter with normal tyres was fine - I think I worked from home 3 times and there was no real sustained snow. However the 320 still has those same tyres on so they're now at least 2/3 worn, the front left has at least one small bulge courtesy of a pothole and I have a feeling this is going to be a longer winter than we've had for a while.

I'm picking up a 14 plate Focus ST2 on Monday as the Cup2's on the GT4 are already suffering some what in this cold snap.

What is the situation with bike tyres now, I used to get by on a standard set whatever and I rode that through snow, hail and ice too.

I can't put winters on the GT4 as I quite like doing the odd trackday in the winter months plus if it does snow the splitter would only act as a snow plough. Still at least its the right colour to be on the fleet of the highways agency

I have always ridden sports bikes and the tyres are close to cut slicks! I can feel it's cold just from the feedback at the bars as soon as I ride off as the tyres are not warm or sticky at all.

I didn't bother last year to start with and ended up doing the change over once we had a foot of snow..... This year they'll be done with the service and MOT by the Jag dealer.

More spending: I’ve finally ordered £1700 worth of Rukka winter suit after my Dainese coat proved itself to be not-at-all-waterproof last week. Rukka is basically the king of weather gear for snowmobilers and motorcyclists alike, being Finnish and all that hence the mad price and my reticence to pay over the years. However a site I use in Germany had a sale on plus yesterday I got a 10% extra off for Hallowe’en. So £870, which is almost twice what I’d pay for any other brand. I hope it lives up to the price and hype / expectation.

I’ve found some 18” Cadiz wheels in near perfect condition. It’s the standard R wheel and I’m not a fan, but they are genuine VW wheels and when I looked through the pictures I realised they were fitted with Crossclimate+ tyres (7mm tread) so might go with those.

Are they the diamond cut 5 spoke type? I'm not a fan either. They'd probably look better painted all one colour.

They ought to do the job a treat. I priced up a full set of Crossclimate+ for the V60 and decided that at 750 quid it wasn't going to happen. Another pair of BFGoodrich GForce Winters, joining the part worn pair, will be fine.

Slight change of plan, will go for the Continental AllSeasonContact based on the recent tyre test in Autoexpress. They are fractionally behind the Crossclimate+ in the dry, but slightly better elsewhere particularly curved aquaplaning and they're really close to the T860 Winter tyre, which means they will be better than most dedicated winters. Link to testDecided I really don't want the Cadiz wheels, so gone for new 18" Pretorias from a VW dealer in St Andrews. £1250 delivered, so £1700 all in. Haven't sorted the BMW wheels yet, put a reasonable offer in on some in the UK, but it wasn't accepted then they disappeared so I assume someone else bought them. Not keen on the others that are available in the UK, so might have to order from Germany but I'm hesitating. I know it should be fine....protected by eBay and PayPal, but I don't like spending that sort of money blind.

That is a lot, I know, but a set of summer tyres is over £1k and they will have a residual value. Just sold the Boxster wheels for £900 and they had the same tyres on as when I bought them 4.5 years ago.

I had a look for winter tyres for the 320 on black circles and they have nothing in the front wheel size - 225/40x19. Pretty surprising since the majority of 3 series are running round on that size!

Winter wheels/tyres for yours will be either 17” or 18”, so no demand in the UK for the 19s. I’ve got these on the way from Germany, only covered 2k KM so almost new and they’re the standard wheel for the 750. 245/45x19.

My neighbour has these on his 2016 730d, I think; his last one had the 12-spoke (?) ones, which are far too fussy for me.

Yes, they’re the std M Sport ones which I really wanted, agree with you on the multi spoke 19s (14 spoke iirc) which are much more readily available.

Fingers crossed that they arrive in the same state they left. Could you not enlist some of your logistical support to magic them to your door?

Fingers crossed that they arrive in the same state they left. Could you not enlist some of your logistical support to magic them to your door? Everything is crossed! Wrong time to year for favours unfortunately. They’re coming direct via a small courier, the seller said he was more confident doing it that way, with someone he knows, rather than one of the bigger companies. That’s why the packaging doesn’t need to be quite as robust as it would need to be if they were being thrown around a sort centre.
