I’ve sold the old BMW winters to an ex colleague/friend, he’s got a bit of a bargain but he’ll collect and we can have a good catch up plus I don’t have to mess around with eBay and they’ll be gone in just over a week. Got my eye on a nearly new set on eBay, genuine 19” BMW alloys with 7mm tread and the all important RDCi. BMW want over £3000 for a set, these are just under £2000. Bit of man maths required....a set of 4 summer tyres is £1100....so that’s halved the cost!
Done some research and might get 18” Pretoria replicas for the Golf and put Crossclimate+ on them. The genuine winter wheels are 18” Pretoria’s, which are £1880 for 4 with a set of tyres or I could buy the wheels as a dealer has a set on eBay and put the Crossclimates on for £1700. The replicas will cost £890 all in and whilst they are a bit heavier than OEM they are supposed to be a bit stronger and are only £110 each if they need replacing vs £300. Both a lot less than the near £900 VW want for a 19” Pret. No issues with pressure sensors either as it has the old rolling radius system. It’s not really me to not go genuine, but it’s a significant difference in cost and at least they will look right.

Will fitting non genuine cause any warranty issues? I would be checking the small print.

Insurance could easily be a problem, after all, they have a liking for everything they can decline insurance on.

There was ice in this afternoons rain shower in Hexhamshire. It has become properly cold today.

In Thailand at the mo, it's 31°c and bloody humid, however back home it's noticibly colder than when we departed, so I think I'm going to get a shock on Monday evening.

It must've rained last night immediately before it froze because this morning the scraper and de-icer spray were not shifting it. Took about 10 minutes for the car to warm up enough to be able to scrape the ice off.

Got back to Heathrow just after 6am on Saturday; glad to have paid a bit extra for covered car parking so I could drive straight off home.... back in my street just after 8am and some of the neighbours were scraping ice ff their windscreens ! Yesterday was wet but this morning was cold, dry and frosty again

Same. Very cold this morning and at 7.30am both cars were totally covered in ice and it was still -3 according to the temperature gauge. So we decided to take the Shogun to the gym as I've not even thought about a winter tyre swap out yet on the Jag.
Now bright sunshine and a beautiful if still cold day.

The frost on the car was quite hard this morning; engine on, heated screens on and the front screen was clear by the time I'd scraped the side windows - excellent!

It was 2c going past Manchester on the M6 this evening and the grit lorries were out. Steering felt a bit light at full bore out of the (many) roadworks, not sure whether than was my imagination or the low temperatures....I’m fairly sure it was the latter. Need to pull my finger out and buy some winter wheels.

It must have rained before it froze last night. Couldn’t get into the drivers door of the Land Rover this morning. When I did, I couldn’t get it to shut. Dismantling the door wasn’t on my list at 7.30am. All sorted now - there must have been some ice inside the lock jamming it.
Roads were lethal. It was fine from the village to the border, but once in Northumberland the village to the A68 hadn’t been treated and was like glass. The A68 wasn’t a lot better.
I went sailing past the entrance to the village I was working at as there was black ice.

Yeah, absolutely no need for winter tyres in the UK.....

Quite. The A/Ts I have on are winter rated with the mountain snowflake but they don’t work on black ice.

I’ve got an early start to get to the train station tomorrow so I’m testing the timed climate. Here’s hoping it works!

I have to admit I had a slight worry it’ll flatten the battery and I’ll miss the train but then I thought it could turn into an early bonfire... I’m sure it’ll be fine.

It turned out to be a roaring success rather than a roaring fire. Very pleased. Apparently the remote control option is something you can retrofit, I'm tempted to do this just because.

Driving around in the seemingly never-ending ice and snow we had in the rural Cotswolds last Winter / early 'Spring' I was more than glad that I had my winter tyres. Made the difference between getting home or not on more than one occasion.

I've currently got £900 of Rukka clothes in my FC-Moto shopping basket. Not for the cold: current suit is OK but it has lost any semblance of waterproofing and I don't like putting the over suit on over a winter suit that's supposed to be waterproof.

Nope. Never had them. I keep saying I'll get them but never have. Still wearing the intermediate gloves so it's not that cold....
