Is it the PM's job to enforce the rules at number 10 or is he being thrown under the bus. Not that I have much sympathy for him but he's a people pleaser and a good timer therefore if theres a beer or glass of win to be had he's probably the first in the queue. . Nothing wrong with that but probably not the right person to hold power.

Yes it does seem rather a damp squib. Though I'm very impressed that the Tories somehow convinced the RMT union to announce the countries largest strike action on the day the report was published. Chapeau on that one

Really enjoyed the GP which was probably the acid test for the new cars. Every year we usually get Hamilton cruising to the win with zero overtaking so this was a massive improvement. Still Hamiltons fantastic recovery drive was something else so shows he's probably still the king of Spain. I do wish he wouldn't want to quit everytime he has a problem, I know its Spain but there were probably still a number of Hamilton fans in the stands who wouldn't want o see him park his car up after 5 laps just because he's had an off.
Russells dice with Verstappen was amazing. How he got back past without crashing I have no idea. Great stuff by both of them. I knew Russell was fast but wasn't sureon his race craft having had a few bumps in the past but he's put that doubt to bed.
Verstappen was fast as always, felt a little sorry for Perez but he should know he's never going to be given equal treatment in Red Bull and they were on different strategies so why hold Verstappen up. He would always have got past as some point. I don';t think the moaning will do anything for his contract negotiations.
And what of Ferrari? They should be well ahead in the championship on both drivers and constructors. They should have done a Brawn this season and ran away with the championship in the first half of the season and try and hang on. Sainz needs a serious result to get his confidence back on track. I think he's a fast guy and was always a safe pair of hands at Mclaren so no reason he can't repeat. The bigger concern is LeClerc who we know runs on emotion. If he can win at Monaco that would be epic but unfortunately I can only see him doing something dumb in Qualifying that puts him out of contention.

I always look at a top spec Talisman and think its a great looking car. In fact Renault probably have one of the most attractive line ups going, its just a shame we don't get most of them.

I like to compare the uk leaving is a bit like Ferrari leaving F1 and joining formula E. Is Formula E not the future? I'm guessing you haven't watched it yet and judging by the viewing figures you're not alone.

Another who hasn't had a pay rise in 5 years. It seems the modern way that if you want a pay rise you move to a new company.

Today the news is that the ONS records more vacancies than unemployment for the first time ever, so there clearly needs to be some kind of re-set of the economy. There are now staff at all levels that can either tell their boss to fuck off with reduced fear or choose their first / next employer on a wider range of criteria. Part of this is caused by the pandemic making people of a certain age in a certain position decide that work can fuck it and moved house to just potter about, not take expensive holidays. Recessions are an invention of the competitive economy, which dictates that you must sell more of “stuff” every year or charge more for it. There are far more pressing issues regarding the food chain, with a poor wheat crop in Western Europe and some issues with central and Eastern European supplies caused by a maniac in Moscow and other issues with other commodity supply (steel and aluminium prices are mental due to ongoing project demand and pipeline demand for something that is currently scarce). A massive demand for a thing you can’t get is not really what recessions are about as not wanting it is a more likely cause. Rising prices relative to income is a huge lag-effect, last seen to great effect in the 1970s when prices went bat shit mental and salaries took years to catch up mainly due to huge swathes of industry being cost controlled by governments. That’s our most likely problem (apart from a war) and the end result will be flat lined house prices against a rise in incomes so that the biggest family cost (housing) falls back in line with the reality of other costs. Keep the Porsche if you enjoy it and it is not utterly imperative to sell. We’re all going to die in the end so we may as well enjoy our time here however we are able. Well done Jeff. I've noticed its a lot quieter round here recently but if this place were to die its your sensible take on the issues in life that I would miss the most.

What's everyone's thoughts on the next few years?
If you listen to the media, we'll all be living on the streets in the next 12 months. Not that I listen too closely but have to say I have concerns. Rapid inflation, brexit still hanging over us which wouldn't be so bad if we didn't have an incomplete government and even weaker opposition. Fuel costs that show no signs of reducing?
I'm having serious thoughts on offloading the 997 and cashing in on its price rise over the last 18 months. I'm also only using the car to really commute everyday as I have less time for trackdays etc. Maybe replacing the car with a 20K hot hatch is a good idea. I could certainly do with the monthly payments in my back pocket as the mortgage is up for renewal next year.
Recession is it a certainty?

It all seems a little desperate from Ferrari, we're 4 races in and they seem desperate to scrap for every point. Which makes sense if its attainable but I see no point in him giving up his easy podium to risk a fastest lap.
Leclerc can't be so fragile either if he wants a WDC. It shows just how good Max and Lewis were last year that they never showed signs of cracking under the pressure. And when they did have a brain fart at least they took the other guy out for good measure.

When I worked at Enterprise we used to make more money selling the cars at a few months old back to the manufacturer/supermarkets than we did renting them! Due to Volume you were probably getting at least 25% discount. I know a lot of rentals in the UK still have the sticker on the speedo "this vehicle must not exceed 10,000 miles " . Given the difficulty in suppling new cars in general, I can't imagine the cars are replaced every 6 months now and the rental company enjoying such large discounts. If the rental companies aren't getting the income at the back end then no great suprise the rental costs are going up.

I think you’d need to spend a fair bit more than £110k to get the proper RR experience (no Windsor leather or pleather dash) as well and although I’ve not driven one, based on an L405 without dynamic response, that would be essential for me. So call it £120k for an SE, so you might as well spend another £8-9k and get the Autobiography…and then you’ll realise you might as well go for the P510e as that gets dynamic response pro as standard so is pretty much the same price but with slightly better residuals. You can just get a P550e with 70mile range by choosing one style of 20" wheel (the other, nicer 20" wheel puts it in 69mile range) no spare etc Hopefully JLR have improved the situation from the one I had on the Evoque, when the range was confirmed at 40miles but subsequently recalibrated to 34miles prior to delivery costing me £1k in tax a year....[/quote] And I guess If your going to spend a huge amount on a Range Rover you don't want to compromise on the spec.

If your going to be leaning on the tyre then get the 4S which is a rather fabulous tyre. If it’s just going on the daily that’ll be going up and down the motorway then a 4 is more then adequate.
As an alternative, Apparently the new Conti sport contract 7 has moved the game on to another level altogether

I have it from a good source that the main issue with Mercedes is that their engines are running far too hot and are having to limit power which would explain why all other teams using their engine are slow too.

Haha, funny from the man with the RAV 4! I resisted the Volvo comment, but did start typing it.... I think the XC 90 is more the UK equivalent of a soccer mom / school run vehicle, but the RAV4 definitely qualifies To be fair, I was thinking about an XC40, but assume that's a bit big? What about a Puma? Puma, good shout! I did think XC40 as well but yes I think its very wide

The Golf performace wasn't the cause but I think the general size and complexity of the car probably didn't help. He's also now a doddery driver and has to come to terms with that.
in his head he still thinks he's in his 50's but he's slowed down a hell of a lot over the last few years and I think its time embraced the higher seating position and small footprint and auto box of something square but not boring as such.
Thoughts on my side were something like a Kia Stonic or VW T-Cross but can't hink of many other small cars on stilts.
I think Auto only would be best.

So the old mans now 82 years old. 6 months ago he went out and bought an ex demo Golf Gti in that lovely deep metallic red. Lovely car with all the bits but with technology that even I thought highly irritating.
Unfortunately a few weeks ago he went to the lake district to see a mate of his and decided that the stone wall that was in his way should no longer be standing and ploughed straight through it writing off his car.
So for his next car I've told him he needs to get sensible and look for something boring that will do the job rather then make him feel younger then he is.
I haven't read a What Car or Autocar for a while so my knowledge cars that are the equivalent of the elasticated trouser or Velcro shoe is limited. A few years ago the answer was a Honda Jazz
Now this is a man who is in denial of being 82, with a car history anyone would be proud of so if you can think giffer car with enough tinsel to disguise its gifferness all the better.
Any ideas?
No budget as such but something new or upto a couple of years old.

Notwithstanding the door handles?? I hear you but there's something so right about a B3s, plus the stripes will cause just enough distraction to keep my eyes off the door handles

Highlighted by a chrome surround, that grill just got even worse. I was hoping that Alpina might have found a way to graft on a different front grill treatment on but unfortunately not. It's a shame because I don't otherwise find the 4GC unattractive. A neighbour had a white one for a couple of days (maybe test driving it) and it looked attractive when parked nose in to his driveway. Agreed. The shape is really nice but the grille hasn't even softened its impact on the visuals with the passing of time. Familiarity has softened the visuals significantly enough to not making it a deal breaker for me. In fact the 4GC has been smart enough to get rid of the 3 series door handles which jar nealy as much as the grille. If I was shopping for an Alpina it would be a B3S Touring in the exact spec Jonny choose for his 4GC apart from I'd have gold strips all over it.
