What does he want the car for? Is it just a weekend toy or a daily driver?
He's giving up his company car, will use his wife's A3 diesel to commute between home and Dundee 4 days a week, the Jag will be hers (but she only does about 1k per year) and he'll use the Jag to commute into the Edinburgh office 1 day a week, plus presumably he'll cruise around in it sometimes.
He made a comment about the 4.2 I linked to being the one he could afford - clearly one of the joys of having 3 late teenage boys is extensive higher education costs

I think both the 4.2 and 5.0 engines are the same basic design, so no real differences except higher power and torque from the 5.0. I ran my 5.0 NA V8 XF up to 85k miles with no issues at all. He must make sure that they have full Jaguar or specialist service history.
The XK is one Jag that pale leather looks good in and it is a nice offset to the black exterior in the first link. All black is bit sombre. I'd imagine that the first one might hold a bit more value as it is a limited edition. I'm not sure what that gave you over a standard one, but the exhausts look different for one thing - squarer ends usually only came with the later 5.0's.
What he really needs to find is an XKR......
As said already chip is your man for the finer points.

The 4.2 is relatively simple whereas the 5.0 was a new design picking up the latest gasoline technology (at the time).
So the AJ133 is a direct injection motor with a high pressure fuel pump and next level cam profile switching and other fancier widgets
By the time the 4.2 was replaced, it had all the flaws addressed and a late model 4.2 will have 3rd gen cam chain tensioners, 2nd or 3rd gen water pump design and other bits and bobs.
I had two nat asp 5.0s and one 5.0 SC to which I can compare the 4.2 with - they are lovely, but the nat asp 4.2 is a tad anaemic (300 bhp, 300lbs ft - vs the 385 bhp and 380 lbs ft of the nat asp 5.0).
Exhaust tuning on both is surprisingly fruity, but I think the base 5.0 XK is the meaner of the two.
Gearboxes are similar (variants of the ZF 6 speed family) and the rest of the car is pretty good - although early X150s have an issue with an air con drain hose that can close up and cause the drainage to back up which means the dash has to come out to fix it. I think they addressed this on the 5.0 cars, but worth asking about.
Both cars linked appear to be base models, but I would want a portfolio as the entire car is trimmed in soft grain leather rather than the elephant arse cack you can see on that 4.2 car (although that 5.0 has suspiciously soft looking dash leather).
On balance, I would always go for the 5.0, but at this end of the market the priority is condition and spec.
In terms of other differences - 4.2 to 5.0 at 2009 MY was mainly powertrain with a gentle tweak inside (mainly some chrome trim on the seat buttons). A more substantial interior lift came at 2012MY when the car had a front end facelift and lost the sad face, but even that was just some soft feel paint.
The infotainment system is crap - but it's the same system they launched the XF with and it never got an update at 2012MY like the XF did.
Pricing is a difficult one - the 5.0 car seems reasonable because good 5.0s start at very high teens.

Thanks Peet, I'll pass those comments on.
John, an SL is his other choice and he showed me one he was looking at at the same time I saw the Jag but tBH I Didn't pay much attention to it. He said he actually prefers the ones with the overlapping round twin-headlights. Are they slightly older than the ones you linked?

Yes, they are older and as far as I am aware, not as good in the ride handling stakes as the ones I linked to. Prettier though!
