Interesting reading - The German transport ministry has ordered Mercedes-Benz to recall up to 774,000 cars across Europe after tests found that they contain unauthorised software, or a so-called defeat device, that could be used to manipulate diesel exhaust emissions.www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/industry/daimler-recall-774000-mercedes-models-due-emission-defeat-devicesSeems to relate to some Euro 6 standard 2.0 4 cylinder diesels, to do with Adblue injection rates. Rather like the issue that Audi are facing on their V6 diesels. Inject more Adblue for the first "n" minutes of running = lower emissions for the tests..... But if that rate was injected all the time, the tank would need to be huge and the costs prohibitive. Perhaps the unproven rumours that Merc threw VW under the bus to save themselves have some merit - allegedly.

I'd be amazed if there weren't more manufacturers at it as well.

PSA were implicated some time ago but whether we will hear about this in more than drips is unlikely. If the story came out all at once we would likely call for prison sentences for all involved.
