I reckon that's pretty good value. Many people would pay nearly 75p/mile just on leasing costs (£500/mth on 8,000 miles). The service package makes a huge difference and I didn't realise how much it meant until I no longer had it!

That is interesting. Adding in depreciation though might make it cost more than the Golf per mile (what mileage has that done?). Not just me then! I included depreciation in both calculations, the Golf has done just over 13,000 miles. On a proper like for like basis the BMW is fractionally cheaper per mile, as I've only just renewed the insurance on the BMW and the Golfs service is due, so that's a £1,200 swing in the BMWs favour making it 4p/mile cheaper.

You're not the only saddo who likes these things!! That makes sense now, I thought 75p might've been a bit high for not including depreciation. It's not a stat I've ever wanted to work out though.

The last service would be been around £1k as it was a full service and the next one isn't due for another 16,000 miles which should be just after it's 3rd Birthday and when the 'value' service kicks in.

Thankfully I've only got 2 cars to keep track of! I've not thought about it before, but with a big depreciation bill, it's much better to be talking about 75p a mile total cost! It's actually a lot better than that, because we use mainly use the Golf at weekends so around 95-90% of the BMW mileage is business mileage, which I get at 21p (was 22p) plus the tax relief, so I can man maths the cost down to 55p

I had it on the M135i as it was £300 for 5yr/60k, so I got two services out of it.
But there was no point having it on the 440i as I think it was nearer £500 and only covered 3yrs/36k miles, so I couldn't see the benefit. In 3yrs, the car has only had one service, which cost about £350.

It was good value when it was 5 years/50k miles (I bought it for the 535d), but agree it wasn't really worth having when they reduced the cover. If you ordered a new 4 series now, it would be £25 a month for 36 months, so £900. It does cover 2 services, but it won't be much of a saving. It's £30 a month on a new 7, so £1080 vs about £1300 unless you have the second service after it's 3 years old in which case it won't save you anything.

Two years ago today I collected the car.
Not much to say that hasn't been said before...... I've done just over 48,000 miles (49,200 total as it had done 1k miles when I bought it) which is 7-8k less than expected at this point, most of which is down to CV19 as I was averaging around 28k a year at the end of February.

How long do you plan to keep it for? Are there optimal points to change (e.g. before mileage hits 100k)? It’s a lovely car but you really do some mileage! Part of me thinks that in your position I’d buy a 2 yr old mondeo to batter up and down the motorway until it broke (which in all honesty might not be a joy, but it wouldn’t be a chore either), but another part of me (I suspect the part that would win) would think that it was worth the extra spend given how much time I’d be spending in it.

The man maths were based on keeping it 3 years which would take it to around 85k miles and would only need 1 x years extended warranty as its not 3 years old until the end of June. The only target I had was keeping it under 60k miles by its 3rd Birthday, as that's the tipping point from eye watering to robbery on the extended warranty costs. I'm not sure what to do next. Part of me does think it's a bit of a waste having a large car that only has me in it 95% of the time and I should switch the budgets around and run something cheaper as a daily. But it's a long time to spend in a car, so it needs to be comfortable with a decent stereo and I do need to enjoy it. I don't think a 2 year old Mondeo would work for me, you need something to balance out the drudgery of motorway driving. I had a new 330i for a few days a couple of months ago and in theory that would be ideal, but it wasn't. I use the Golf a fair bit as we mainly run around in it at the weekend, I use it for a couple of Swindon trips a month and occasionally for work, so I do 7-8k miles a year. The ride/refinement isn't anywhere near the 750, but it's surprisingly comfortable (in comfort!) and I always enjoy driving it, so it's not impossible to find something cheaper that would work.

Similar man-maths to me then, I planned to keep each XFR to around 85k and only only one year warranty on top of the two years I got as a main dealer purchase. That's exactly a year away for me (through the mileage will be way under this time - 60k ish), and I share your feelings - it does cost a lot, but in my case it's also better value to buy (so not freeing up so much cash if sold) - something like an M135/40i (obvs the 6 cyl RWD ones) makes more sense in many ways. But the noise, the XFR makes, the sheer pace of the thing, the incredible ability to hack across Europe in such comfort and also feel like an uber-hatch on a bumpy B road make it very hard to replace... Longer term, I expect many of us need to see what we use our cars for now. I can't see myself doing nearly as many business miles, a trend that was already in place from doing a sales management job for 4 years now, and more and more just walking to the station to go to London for the days I do leave the house. But I do do a fair few long trips for private use, and we both like driving across Europe, so while I sometimes think a smaller more obviously "fun" car might work better (and I'm liking cabrios now I've used one more) I do also like something quiet and comfortable on the motorway....

It will be interesting to see what the new ways of working does to my mileage. I think there will be less travelling for meetings, but I don't think it will be materially different to what it is now and I'll still be covering over 10k miles a year going to and from Swindon.

I swapped the plates over and cleared it out last night, then sat in it for about 10 mins....silly maybe, but I do feel really quite sad about it going. At least I've got a 50 miles drive to enjoy this afternoon.
Two years is the shortest amount of time I've had a car, although I'm usually itching for the next thing by then. My one regret is not doing a proper European road trip in it, which I've done in all the cars I've had over the last 20 years and this is the one that would have been the best at that type of trip.
Not that I haven't had plenty of use and enjoyment out of it. It will click over 50,000 miles this afternoon, so 49,000 since I bought it, despite only doing 2,000 miles since the end of February instead of the 8-9,000 it would have done.
Great car and an absolute bargain for the next owner!

I'll work it out at some point, but the high level answer is surprisingly little for running costs because it came with a 50k mile service pack and has only needed 2 new tyres, it hasn't needed brake pads or any other consumables. Economy was a lot better than I thought / budgeted and depreciation was broadly what I expected, just a bit higher per month as it would have slowed down a bit over the next 10 months and I was planning to keep it 3 years.

That really is ridiculous economy for a 4.4L V8 in a big car. No doubt your car will be chauffeuring someone around shortly and the dealer will be very pleased with the quick turnaround of cash.

Really, I would be. I cant imagine the market for big V8 saloons is booming right now. Maybe low petrol prices are helping.
