My thinking was based on the last jump being from 5 to 7 series but given that the 760 is meant to be yet another step up in luxury from the ‘lesser’ 7s you’re probably right. Though I must say the only major upgrade on the advertised car over Martins is the engine.

I wondered that, too but perhaps that is intended only for those who don't drive themselves. James Bond could drive his 7 series from the back seat, via his smartphone. Did you tick that box Martin?

What happens with the 'carpet' if the car is parked the other way? Does it know which way you're approaching from? No, clearly you must always approach from the rear.....

I can drive it from the outside. As long as all I need to do is go forwards and backwards in a straight line and can keep within a couple of metres of the car, which would make getting away from a baddy a bit tricky.....

The welcome carpet reminded me of something.... just realised what it is, the new F1 logo.....

Looks lovely! Nice colour too. Its the best looking 7 series for some time, it manages to look like a bigger meaner 4 series - in an entirely good way.
Love the leather - I always like all the additional interior detailing on XJ's when I'm at my dealership, car makers do a good job of making the interiors of the really high-end saloons incredibly desirable. Nice, when that's the bit you see/experience the most!
What is the engine - basically a slightly detuned M5's V8?

What is the engine - basically a slightly detuned M5's V8? It is, yes. Sounds better though (imo) thanks to the optional M Sport Exhaust and abscence of fakery.

A lovely car Martin. I think the fashion has been for white cars for long enough for silver to look good again.
It doesn't look as if it has a massive amount of rear legroom (relatively), assuming the seat is set for you.

No, it’s not quite as big in the back as you’d think/expect, especially when the rear seat is reclined (backrest reclined, seat base forward to increase the angle) and the front seat is set for me as it is in that picture. I can just fit behind my seating position with the rear seat fully back, but there’s plenty of room with the rear seat in the normal position.

That's why most chauffeurs are small - it leaves room for their passengers to lounge about. Your purchase has had me looking at these on the BMW site. They look a really nice place to sit with superb detail and quality.

They are a lovely place to sit. If you have a really good poke around one you’ll find all sorts of nice and quality touches, there’s soft leather in places you wouldn’t expect, even the carpet mats are more luxurious. Fairly heavy traffic on the way home, but I wound down with a nice back massage listening to Spotify wirelessly through the amazing speakers.
I thought I was going to go into triple figures at the fuel pump, it took £97 to fill it and there was still 50 miles range (I’d done 460 miles), it was showing 568 miles range as I pulled off the forecourt. Surprisingly it said 95 Ron on the fuel flap (which is beautifully damped), but it got treated to Shells finest anyway.

Missed this post. Looks like a fabulous place to sit. Nice engine, but I agree V-Power all the way. What's so bad about the steering wheel? It's a 7-er, not an M3. I filled up yesterday and Fuelly said, well done: you've improved over your last tank. 16.8mpg

Talking of petrol, what has happened with the price? It has gone up about 4p in the last week. Trump vs Iran

When I was in the USA last week, a few locals were complaining that the price of gasoline had gone up about 50c per gallon because of the holiday period (Memorial Day) but would probably drop back down again afterwards - this was seen as blatant profiteering by the oil companies.
Current price? Just 3.49 dollars per gallon

There was a piece in the FT a couple of days ago stating that the oil price is now coming down and is likely to continue falling.

I have just paid for our US holiday car to come with a full tank - charged at $2.89/gallon for a 20 gallon tank. At less than £45 for a full tank it doesn't really worry me if I give it back with a few gallons left but it saves a load of end of holiday hassle trying to find somewhere to fill up.
As for your car Martin, I have found myself sifting through everything on the BMW website with a 4.4 litre engine!!!

It came with a full tank and mpg has been better than expected, but I’ve still spent £195 in 11 days on fuel. I will have doubled the mileage it had when I bought it by the end of Friday!

Your mpg proves the point that the best mpg can be got from an engine that is efficient and understressed 99% of the time.
I bet a 1.0 eco engine driven hard to keep up with you as you potter along (engineering wise) would not show that different mpg. Well Ok it might be better, but not 1.0 v 4.4 better.

That's the comparison no-one makes! And why I like MPG listed at a constant 70mph above all else, that's what constitutes a lot of my mileage and smaller more efficient cars struggle disproportionately in this area. The pace thing is relevant too - I'd have to rag our C Max to stay with the XFR on a tiny throttle opening, and the result will be similar MPG. Stop start and cold starts/short trips are the hardest to get good results from with a big engine - take the other car for that!

It’s early days, but driven in a similar style at a similar speed, the 535d would achieve 20% (poss 25% at a push) more mpg.
